A magic elixir is shown to promote weight loss
COSUME more water and you will become much
healthier, goes an old wives’ tale. Drink a glass of water
before meals and you will eat less, goes another. Such
prescriptions seem sensible, but they have little rigorous
science to back them up.
Until now, that is. A team led by Brenda Davy of
Virginia Tech has run the first randomized controlled
trial studying the link between water consumption and
weight loss. A report on the 12-week trial, published
earlier this year, suggested that drinking water before
meals does lead to weight loss. At a meeting of the
American Chemical Society in Boston this week, Dr Davy
unveiled the results of a year-long follow-up study that
confirms and expands that finding.
The researchers divided 48 inactive Americans, aged
55 to 75, into two groups. Members of one were told to
drink half a litre of water (a bit more than an American
pint) shortly before each of there daily meals. The
others were given no instructions on what to drink.
Befoe the trial, all participants had been consuming
between 1,800 and 2,200 calories a day. When it began,
the women’s daily rations were slashed to 1,200
calories, while the men were allowed 1,500. After three
months the group that drank water before meals had
lost about 7kg (151/2lb) each, whereas those
in the thirsty group lost only 5kg.
Dr Davy condidently bats away some obvious doubts
about the results. There is no selection bias, she
observes, since this is a randomized trial. It is possible
that the water displaced sugary drinks in the hydrated
group, but this does not explain the weight loss because
the calories associated with any fizzy drinks consumed
by the other group had to fall within the daily limits.
Moreover, the effect seems to be longlasting. In the
subsequent 12 months the participants have been
allowed to eat and drink what they like. Those told to
drink water during the trial have, however, stuck with
the habit−apparently they like it. Strikingly, they have
continued to lose weight (around 700g over the year),
whereas the other participants have put it back on.
Why this works is obscure. But work it does. It’s
cheap. It’s simple. And unlike so much dietary advice, it
seems to be enjoyable too.

Bossa Nova, Brazil's unique mix of jazz and samba,
celebrates 50 years this month with shows by one of the
genre's pioneers, João Gilberto, who brought The Girl
from Ipanema to the world. The three concerts by 77-
year-old Gilberto in Rio and São Paulo sold out within an
hour of going on sale Thursday, testifying to the lasting
appeal and inspiration of both the silky music and the
singer's hypnotically breathy performance.
Gilberto - the surviving member of the trio behind
Bossa Nova that also counted composer Tom Jobim and
poet Vinícius de Moraes - has not sung in public in Brazil
for five years. His reputation, though, has never
diminished, ever since August 1958 when his singular
voice and guitar playing appeared on Chega de Saudade
(Enough Longing, or, more commonly in English, No
More Blues), a tune by Jobim and Moraes.
That was the first track to lay out the cool,
intimate harmonies of Bossa Nova that add complexity
to samba's more basic rhythms, giving it a jazz evolution
whose impact has been felt over decades. US jazz greats
Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd fell under its sway and added
to its popularity.
But it was a 1962 worldwide hit by Gilberto, with his
then-wife Astrud and Getz, that became the Bossa Nova
standard. Garota de Ipanema, adapted to English as
The Girl from Ipanema, was picked up by many singers,
including Frank Sinatra. In 1963, the English version of
the song raced up international charts. "We only lost to
the Beatles. And there were four of them," wryly
remarked Jobim. Bossa Nova spread everywhere from
the mid-1960s, from Copacabana apartments to New
York jazz clubs.
In Rio de Janeiro today, Bossa Nova has been
supplanted by other genres, notably other samba
variations and US-style hip-hop or rock. But, it can still
be heard, a persistent note characterizing Brazil's
iconically beautiful seaside city. "Today, there are a lot
more albums than 40 years ago. It (Bossa Nova) is not
at the top of the charts, but it is still a style picked up
by people of all ages," said Ruy Castro, an author of
several books on music. Lyra, the singer and composer
who appeared in Carnegie Hall 46 years ago, was less
generous. "If somebody asks me today where they can
hear Bossa Nova in Rio, I say 'nowhere'. The music is
more popular in Japan and Europe than in Brazil," he
said.

The human brain is complex. Along with performing
millions of mundane acts, it composes concertos, issues
manifestos and comes up with elegant solutions to
equations. It's the wellspring of all human feelings,
behaviors, experiences as well as the repository of
memory and self-awareness. So it's no surprise that the
brain remains a mystery unto itself.
Adding to that mystery is the contention that humans
"only" employ 10 percent of their brain. If only regular
folk could tap that other 90 percent, they too could
become savants who remember π to the twenty
thousandth decimal place or perhaps even have
telekinetic powers.
Though an alluring idea, the "10 percent myth" is so
wrong it is almost laughable, says neurologist Barry
Gordon at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in
Baltimore. Although there's no definitive culprit to pin
the blame on for starting this legend, the notion has
been linked to the American psychologist and author
William James, who argued in The Energies of Men that
"We are making use of only a small part of our possible
mental and physical resources." It's also been
associated with Albert Einstein, who supposedly used it
to explain his cosmic towering intellect.
The myth's durability, Gordon says, stems from
people's conceptions about their own brains: they see
their own shortcomings as evidence of the existence of
untapped gray matter. This is a false assumption. What
is correct, however, is that at certain moments in
anyone's life, such as when we are simply at rest and
thinking, we may be using only 10 percent of our brains.
"It turns out though, that we use virtually every part
of the brain, and that most of the brain is active almost
all the time," Gordon adds. "Let's put it this way: the
brain represents three percent of the body's weight and
uses 20 percent of the body's energy."
Although it's true that at any given moment all of the
brain's regions are not concurrently firing, brain
researchers using imaging technology have shown that,
like the body's muscles, most are continually active over
a 24-hour period.

ENGLISH - THE WORLD'S LANGUAGE
1 The Prime Minister has announced a boost to English
language learning, teaching and training facilities for
people throughout the world.
2 The English language, like football and other sports,
began here and has spread to every corner of the globe.
Today more than a billion people speak English. It is
becoming the world's language: the language of the
internet, of business, of international flight - the
pathway of global communication and global access to
knowledge. And it has become the vehicle for hundreds
of millions of people of all countries to connect with each
other, in countless ways. Indeed, English is much more
than a language: it is a bridge across borders and
cultures, a source of unity in a rapidly changing world.
3 English does not make us all the same - nor should
it, for we honour who we distinctly are. But it makes it
possible for us to speak to each other, to better
understand each other. And so it is a powerful force not
just for economics, business and trade, but for mutual
respect and progress. I don't know how many times I've
been told by people in every continent I have visited of
the power of the English language to break down
barriers to understanding.

pride. It is in part an accident of history - a wave of

speak with each other in English - their shared
language.
6 But there are millions of people in every continent
who are still denied this chance to learn English -
prevented from enjoying many of the benefits of the
internet, commerce and culture. And I believe that no
one - 1however poor, however distant - should be
denied the opportunity that the English language
provides. So I want Britain to make a new gift to the
world - pledging to help and support anyone, whatever
their circumstances, to have access to the tools they
need to learn or to teach English. And my plan is that in
the next 10 years at least 1 billion more people in the
villages, towns and cities of every continent will have
access to resources, materials and qualifications from
the UK.
7 This week, during my visit to China and India, we will
start to make our new commitment a reality. I want this
to be a world wide endeavour of private and public
sectors working together - with broadcasters, telecom
companies, publishers, universities, colleges and
schools playing their part in opening up English
language opportunities to millions.
8 First, we will announce that the British Council,
working with partners from both public and private
sectors, will set up a new website offering learners and
teachers of English around the world ready access to
the materials, resources and qualifications they need to
develop their skills in English. Having - with the BBC and
the Open University - pioneered the use of the internet
to reach many more people on-line, the British Council
is perfectly placed to lead this path breaking project.
9 The new site will enable one to one tuition to take
place through VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol),
harnessing new technology to share the power of
English. It will provide links to a wide range of sites with
a wealth of knowledge and creativity in education,
industry, culture, and science. And over the next few
years, we hope to see the site being used by people in
the schools, cities and even remote places on every
continent.
10 Most critically of all, it will put English teachers and
learners in touch with their counterparts in Britain and
other countries. With an initial focus on China, our
starting ambition is to encourage 1 million hits on the
website a month. And this will play an even bigger part
in the rapid transformation of English speaking in China,
supporting the decision of China's government that
English language lessons should be a requirement in
Chinese schools from age six with 20 million more
children a year starting lessons. In Beijing alone
200,000 adults also take English lessons outside the
school system. And I believe that, with the right help,
we will have a situation by 2025 where the number of
English speakers in China exceeds the number of
speakers of English as a first language in all of the rest
of the world.
11 Second, to transform English language teaching we
will need to dramatically increase the numbers and
quality of those teaching and training English. So we will
expand the existing framework of qualifications for
English teachers to strengthen the development
pathway for teachers at every stage of their career. We
will encourage the development of new short distance
learning courses, building on the success of current
qualifications such as Certificate and Diploma in English
Language Teaching. And we will work with the BBC,
other broadcasters and providers of English language
training to raise the number of programmes on the
English curriculum accessible via the web - and
encourage commercial companies to make available the
books, CD's and DVD material that flow from this.
12 English is our heritage, but it is also becoming the
common future of human commerce and
communication. This is a great opportunity for Britain -
and a measure of the greatness that lies not in empire
or territory but through a language that has the power
to bring this world of over 200 countries and billions of
people closer together, with the versatility to evolve and
adapt. We will take up with vigour the bold task of
making our language the world's common language of
