3 APPLICATION
3.1 Standards should be applied to ships of all rudder and propulsion types, of 100 m
in length and over, and chemical tankers and gas carriers regardless of the length.
*For ships with non-conventional steering and propulsion systems, the Administration
may permit the use of comparative steering angles to the rudder angles specified by
this Standard.

O Efeito do Leme na Guinada do Navio
“The effect of a rudder on turning of a ship is indirect. ” pag 195 PNA Vol III
“The lateral force from the deflected rudder thus creates a moment to turn the ship. This
turning action causes the ship to develop an angle of attack with respect to its motion
through the water. The lateral forces then generated by the well designed ship (acting as
a foil moving in a liquid at an angle of attack) create a moment, Nvv, that greatly
augments the rudder moment. The combined moments cause the turning motion as
indicated in Figure.” Pag 199 PNA Vol III

.1 Turning ability
The advance should not exceed 4.5 ship lengths (L) and
the tactical diameter
should not exceed 5 ship lengths in the turning circle
manoeuvre.
The track reach in the full astern stopping test should not exceed 15 ship lengths. However, this value may be modified by the
Administration where ships of large displacement make this criterion impracticable, but should in no case exceed 20 ship lengths.

4. Em muitos navios não é permitida a reversão do eixo do propulsor com velocidade altas.
7. Estudos de manobrabilidade para navios antigos não se aplicam aos novos navios.

Reação hidrodinâmica ao abatimento aerodinâmico
Numerical simulation for two wind-assist hulls with 12 knots boat speed and leeway angle equal to 9°. The
orientation of the coordinate system is such that the direction of vessel motion is toward the top of the
page. Longitudinal vortices are identified in dark, while the (normalized) fluid kinetic energy is given on
transverse sections. The left hull has 20% larger T/L compared to the right hull (for the same
displacement).
