O que um texto?
Atualmente, a Lingustica Textual e a Anlise do Discurso, nos forne-
Enquanto a primei-

Fundamentos do Texto em Lngua Inglesa I
Gneros
Segundo Meurer (2002, p.11), trs aspectos so definidores
Neste ponto, tomaremos a definio
Texto 1
Boil potatoes in coats, remove skin and cut into cubes. Remove skin from
cucumbers, apples and onions and cut like potatoes. Mix the ingredients.
Prepare the sauce: clean the garlic and cut into small cubes. Mix with
given ingredients. Mix the sauce with the salad.
to. coerente e organizado e podemos entend-lo facilmente.

Prepare the sauce: clean the garlic and cut into small cubes. Mix with given ingredients. Mix

The recipe is for 6-8 portions.
humanas.

Five years ago there was a movie about Dr. Bruce Banner, a scientist who,
when agitated, turns large and green. It was called Hulk and it didnt do very
well, either with critics or with the legions of comic-book fans expected to sacri-
fice a portion of their pocket money every summer to keep the movie studios
afloat. Now Universal and Marvel, every bit as indomitable as their rampaging
asparagus-colored intellectual property, have given the franchise another try.
The new movie about poor Dr. Banner, directed by Louis Leterrier (The
Transporter,Transporter 2) from a script by Zak Penn (X2,X-Men: The Last
Stand), is called The Incredible Hulk. But lets not get carried away: The
Adequate Hulk would have been a more suitable title. There are some big,
thumping fights and a few bright shards of pop-cultural wit, but for the most
part this movie seems content to aim for the generic mean. If you really need
a superhero to tide you over until Hellboy and Batman resurface next month
and honestly, do you? really? why? I guess this big green dude will do.
The latest Hulk, a computer-generated behemoth with torn pants and tou-
sled hair, is a slightly improved version of the character created by Stan Lee and
Jack Kirby 46 years ago, though a cameo appearance by Lou Ferrigno, the Hulk
on the old television series, may induce some fond nostalgia for the analog
days when a superhero could be impersonated by an actual person.. []

Blonsky), Tim Blake Nelson (Samuel Sterns), Ty Burrell (Leonard) and William
Hurt (General Ross).

pontos positivos e negativos; resumir a estria. Essas convenes permitem que
o autor exera a funo comunicativa desse gnero, qual seja, descrever, avaliar e

Your Phone
Voc reconhece a funo
comunicativa desse trecho?
Divulgao: LG.
uso de imperativos (Hold down the key Segure a tecla) e pela sequncia lgica
de aes: 1. Hold down the key; 2. If the telephone asks for PIN [...] e ilustraes para
melhor compreenso.

exceo do verbo to be e dos modais (would, can, may, might, should, must, shall), em

senvolvimento homogneo e contnuo;
58
Unidades textuais

59
Fundamentos do Texto em Lngua Inglesa I
He found it there.
Ele achou-o(a) l.

60
Unidades textuais
Coeso gramatical
so oral do que no escrito.
me, advrbio, sinnimo, hipernimo e outros que tenham valores semelhantes,
Substituio Elipse

If you want to drive a car, you need to have a drivers license. First, get a booklet
describing the traffic laws in your city or state. Next, study this guide and when
you feel secure, go an authorized testing office because written tests are usually
required. After passing this first test you have go through a driving test. Although
its not common that people fail its recommended that you practice a lot since you

(1) A dictionary contains a definition of friendship somewhere in the Fs

friendship is really all about. The only way to understand friendship is
through experience. It is an experience that involves all the senses.
(2) Friendship can be seen. It is seen in an old couple sitting in the park
holding hands. It is the way they touch, a touch as light as a leaf floating in the

(3) Friendship can be heard. It is heard in the words of two friends who
squeezed in lunch together on an extremely busy day. Friendship can be
heard by those willing to listen.
(5) Friendship has a taste. It tastes like homemade bread, the ingredients
all measured and planned, then carefully mixed and kneaded, then the quiet
waiting as the dough rises. Hot from the oven, the bread tastes more than
the sum of its ingredients.
(6) Friendship has a smell. It smells like the slightly burnt cookies your

What is an opinion?
Facts are often used in conjunction with research and study. The census (a
survey of the population usually conducted by a government department)
is a good example of when facts are used. These facts can be supported
by information collected in the census, e.g. According to UK Government
national statistics in 2004, approximately one in five people in the UK were
aged under 16.
Writers often mix fact and opinion. So it is not always easy to tell whether
something is based on verifiable information or someones particular
viewpoint. For this reason, it is important to read with a questioning mind.
Just because someone says something is true it doesnt mean it is true?

Writers dont start genres, audiences do. A niche audience starts the
conversation by asking a certain kind of question over and over in the same
general context. For instance, newspaper editors tend to ask, Whats the news
item here? When can I release this? Who can I call for more info? In response,
publicists came up with the generic press release, a fairly standard approach
to answering those questions in a methodical way, with a heading, release
date, and contact phone number. Through the ongoing virtual conversation
between editors and acks, a peculiar type of text is developeda genre.
How do I do x? Procedure
Whats the real crime here, and how will it be solved? Detective novel
Once the audience has gotten your attention with a broad question, and
persuaded you to write in a particular genre in response to that question,
you discover that, buried inside that larger question the audience may have
a whole set of follow-up questions, which come up in a certain order. In fact
the follow-up questions often fall into a nested hierarchy. For instance, within
the basic question, How do I do this?(which we reply to with a procedure)
are smaller questions such as, What tools do I need to get ready?and What
should my work look like now?

a generic procedure, you might draw a nested hierarchy, indicating which
elements were optional, and which were required and in what order a
document type denition for the genre. In fact genres are informal analogies
of the content models you create for XML delivery. A genre acts as a general
model, an uncodied but widely acknowledged structure, with an implied
style. Each writer, through pressure, inspiration, or laziness, will twist the
model a little, to t a particular context. But even with these variations, writers
expect that visitors should recognize that the text is following an established
convention with a familiar structure.

02 The unnamed narrator of this story is a wildly successful novelist and celebrity who
lives in Paris with his wife Esther, a war correspondent who speaks four languages. Their
marriage has hit a dry spot and she is restless, wanting to move on in search of her own
happiness. When Esther disappears, he is tormented and traumatized by the mystery
of what has happened to her. Has she been kidnapped, killed, or has she left him for
another lover?
03 The narrator has had has plenty of success in his life: well attended book signings, po-
wer lunches with film industry people, and interviews with journalists. But it all leaves
him with a sour taste in his mouth. He remembers a story by Jorge Luis Borges about a
mystical coin: A year later, I wake thinking about the story by Borges, about something
which, once touched or seen, can never be forgotten, and which gradually so fills our
thoughts that we are driven to madness. My Zahir is not a romantic metaphor a blind
man, a compass, a tiger, or a coin. It has a name, and her name is Esther.
04 The narrators struggle is that of a man as trying to come to terms with something he
cannot understand or control: the mystery of Esthers absence. It is very hard for him
to let go of his feeling that she is the only one who fills his life with meaning. The inner
journey he takes opens him up to new possibilities.
05 Then Mikhail, the last person Esther was seen with, contacts the narrator and promises
to take him to her. Mikhail, a young man who works with unhappily married couples,
has his own spiritual perspective on love.
06 Coelho has not created a masterwork on the level of The Alchemist, but for those who
are willing to travel lightly, there are some interesting insights here on obsessive love,
the emptiness of celebrity-status success, and the courage needed to square off against
the mysteries and rewards of letting go of ego and stepping into the dark unknown.

Purchase a smoke detector if you do not have one. Smoke detectors are
inexpensive and are required by law in many localities. Check local codes

require specific types of detectors. They provide an early warning which is

The following document will discuss what technical manuals are, where
they will be in the future and how the rhetorical situation affects and shapes
the genre.
Technical Manuals exist for various reasons which vary depending on the
specific document and the product and producer it was commissioned by.
Nevertheless, a well-written technical manual of any variety exists to:
128
Caracterizao e emprego dos gneros textuais I textos instrucionais
In some ways, technical manuals are a form of advertising for the producer
as well. While the writing is mainly used to explain complex ideas, procedures,
safety specifications etc., it is also a way to sell an idea or product or to reaffirm
a users confidence in the product they have already purchased or ideas they
have already accepted. A superior product and well-written manual reflect
well upon the producer and increase the likelihood of additional purchases
or upgrades in the future.
Like any other form of writing, technical manuals exist for the audience.
Since this genre of writing covers a variety of topics and products, the
audiences necessarily changes with each specific document. Based on what
the audience does with the document however, some generalizations can
be made in this area.
The primary audiences which technical manuals exist for are the users of
the product. These are the people who will own or work with the product
first hand. These users will have a task in mind when using the product and

the accompanying document should aid in that process rather than detract
from it with lengthy, unnecessary or misplaced information.
As with any genre of writing, the rhetorical triangle signifies that audiences,
authors and writing interact with one another in some way. Not all types of
writing have the same form of interaction. Because technical manuals are
more about the specific product and how it is used to reach a certain goal
or perform an action rather than the writing itself, the rhetorical situation for
technical manuals is greatly different than other popular forms of writing.

Eating meat is a bad idea + It would be much better for you and the
environment to give it up and become a vegetarian. In the first place it is
cruel. You wouldnt eat cats or dogs and yet you kill and eat cows and sheep.
Secondly, meat is not particularly good for you. It is full of saturated fats that
may lead to heart disease. According to national survey 20% of heart attacks
strikes people who eat meat everyday. Finally, meat eating is extravagant. It
takes more food to feed the animals than we need to eat. If everyone in the
world became a vegetarian there would be no starvation because there
would be enough food to go round. There are a number of reasons why
eating meat is a bad idea. It is cruel, it is unhealthy and it is extravagant. Wes
hould all become vegetarians.

Chapter 7 contains particularly detailed descriptions of select
activities, anticipation guides among them, for teaching Romeo and

readers. Also, its particularly helpful that many of their activities
include relevant IRA/NCTE standards addressed in that lesson,
for this helps teachers see that a standards-based lesson need not

Fundamentos do Texto em Lngua Inglesa I
In this overview, we consider why people crave and eat chocolate, particulary
in the context of food cravings and emotional eating, and chocolates mood
state effects. In the many comprehensive reviews (e. g., Bruinsma and Taren,
1999; Christensen, 1993; Ganley, 1989; Mercer and Holder, 1997; Ottley,
2000; Pelchat, 2002; Rogers and Smit, 2000; Weingarten and Elston, 1990),
explanations of chocolate and carbohydrate cravings vary widely and include
self-medication, homeostatic correction, hedonic experience, addiction to
psychoactive substances and emotional eating theories, but it may be possible
to integrate the disparate theories. We will argue that chocolate craving and
chocolate emotional eating are two separate phenomena although they can
co-exist in the same individual and that any mood state effects of chocolate
are as ephemeral as holding a chocolate in ones mouth.

(4) The changes in teaching approaches for these individuals has been
multidimensional and includes the design of new instructional strategies, the
use of new teaching approaches and the alteration of beliefs (pedagogical
assumptions and learning theories) about learning and teaching in higher
education. These findings are significant for the programme team and future
participants, in that they can be used to support this model and the teaching
strategies and format of the programme as it presently stands. In a wider frame,
they are important to allow academic staff to realise opportunities to join forces
with others in their departments, and show them that they are part of a larger
movement to develop a learning society through their work with students.
(5) Within the realm of teaching in higher education (HE), in this new mil-
lennium, there is currently no professional training requirement for teachers
in Ireland; as a result, the majority of teachers in Irish higher education do not
have any teaching qualifications, and essentially are required to learn on the
job, oftentimes relying on how they were taught themselves. However, there
is growing recognition within the sector for the need for training for lecturers
and other academic staff who have a teaching component to their work.

Organizao
Burke offers a wide variety of suggestions on multiple topics in a short, teacher-friendly volume.
After a brief introduction citing the National Research Council on how people learn, this easy-
to-read guide starts with a self assessment on effective instruction posing questions that
directly correspond to the books ten chapters, fitting into the three major themes: instruction,
classroom culture, and curriculum. Readers are encouraged to start with the most urgently
needed areas, rather than proceed cover to cover. With a consistent and predictable approach,
each chapter begins with a handy five point summary called Guiding principles, and succinctly
develops the main ideas followed by multiple brief examples explaining each point.

Consistent throughout the book is the authors insistence that teachers design
their lessons with students and learning outcomes in mind. Burke assumes that
teachers have the freedom to practice their craft and gives them the tools to do
it. In practice, certain advice may not be applicable for some teachers depen-
ding on their situations. For example, some districts may use predetermined tex-
tbooks with very scripted lessons so that Burkes chapter on Curriculum Basics:
Teach Skills and Knowledge in Context may not be fully usable by its teachers.

However, whatever the range of circumstance, these wonderful ideas can be seen as objectives
to be attained gradually or practices to be implemented immediately. Even if a teacher cannot
follow every piece of valuable advice this year, this is a book to keep and refer to each year as a
self measure and a list of attainable goals to remember.

bean) and added sugar. Cocoa butter melts at room temperature to provide
the creamy melt in the mouth sensation. Europeans added sugar to appeal
to their palate when chocolate was introduced from America. Dark chocolate
contains these three elements, milk chocolate contains extra milk solids and
fats, and white chocolate is akin to milk chocolate without the cocoa base.
2.2 Chocolate craving
Chocolate is the most commonly craved food and, for most chocolate
cravers, non-chocolate substitutes are inadequate (WEINGARTEN; ELSTON,
1991). Chocolate is not a natural product, and thus its appeal depends on its
individual constituents and their unique combination. Chocolate is sweet,
raising the possibility of confusion between chocolate craving and sweet
craving, but it also contains fat (ROZIN et al., 1991). Similarly, other foods that
are commonly craved (e.g., ice cream, doughnuts, cakes, biscuits) also taste
sweet and might be misjudged as rich in sugar, but most of their calories are
provided by fat. Drewnowski et al. (1992) have therefore suggested that the
term carbohydrate craving is a misnomer when applied to such foods.
2.3 Psychoactive properties of chocolate
Because chocolate craving has some features of addiction, attempts have
been made to identify any psychoactive ingredients. Several candidates
have been identified (the biogenic stimulant amines caffeine, theobromine,
tyramine and phenylethylamine), but their concentrations are too low
to have a significant psychoactive effect and they are also present in
higher concentrations in non-craved foods (BNF Nutrition Bulletin, 1998;
HETHERINGTON; MACDIARMID, 1993; HURST et al., 1982; ROZIN et al., 1991;
WEINGARTEN; ELSTON, 1991; OTTLEY, 2000).
Comparisons of subjects ingesting milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white
chocolate and cocoa powder (powdered cocoa mass with some cocoa
butter extracted) have demonstrated that milk chocolate is most preferred. If
psychoactive substances were involved, then cocoa powder should equally
satisfy craving and dark chocolate should be the most preferred (MICHENER;
ROZIN, 1994).
Chocolate contains two analogues of anandamine similar to the
cannabinoid responsible for euphoria from cannabis. However, any association
with pleasure from chocolate is likely to be indirect as the analogues inhibit
breakdown of endogenously produced anandamine (TOMASO et al., 1996).

Gneros do discurso
e PCN / PCNEM / PCN+
O estudo de gneros textuais e o termo gnero no so conceitos
novos.

207
Fundamentos do Texto em Lngua Inglesa I
vistas, seminrios, apresentaes etc.) e escrita (propagandas, currculo, manu-
ais etc.); informais (piadas, convites etc.) e formais (regulamentos, memorandos

I have several proposals for cutting down on office staff. First, I suggest that
we eliminate the secretaries because we can easily outsource them. Second,
we can lay off our full time cleaning people and hire part time workers for
this task. Finally, we can start voluntary dismissal plans for both American and
Spanish factories. Although we may have problems in the beginning, we are
going to save lots of budget money.

Sentenas de Apoio (3) He walks around the house with pride and grace with
a delicacy of a ballet dancer. His pride, however, does no
extend to his appearance for he spends most of his time
indoors watching television and growing fat. Tony is also
picky about visitors befriending some and repelling others,
causing, sometimes, the most embarrassing situations.
My last vacations
I had a great time on my last vacations. I spent one week on the most fantastic
beach ever. I went there with a group of friends from college. We used to spend
the day on the beach surfing or hanging out with pretty girls and in the evening
we went dancing or met some new friends at a restaurant or in a bar. Heavy rains
made us stay indoors for two days, but even without the beach atmosphere, we
could enjoy ourselves by playing cards or board games. Finally it was time to go
home, but I felt perfectly relaxed and ready for another school term.
