Em always combines (contracts) with these words. It’s actually
rare to see em alone in a sentence.
With o and a: (the)

em + o = no >  Ela está no cinema. (She’s at the movies.)
em + a = na >  Ela está na praia. (She’s at the beach.)
With ele and ela: (he/she)
em + ele = nele >  Joguei a bala nele. (I threw him the ball.)
em + ele = nela >  Estou pensando nela. (I’m thinking about
her.)
With um and uma: (a)
em + um = num >  Eu trabalho num escriótrio. (I work in a

office.)
em + uma = numa >  Encontramos numa festa. (We met at a
party.)
With esse, essa and isso: (this)
em + esse = nesse >  Nesse momento estou ocupado. (I’m

busy right now.)
em + essa = nessa >  Eu moro nessa casa. (I live in this
house.)
em + isso = nisso >  Eão não acredito nisso. (I don’t believe
in this.)
With este, esta and isto: (this – more formal)

em + este = neste >  Neste momento estou ocupado. (I’m
busy right now.)
em + esta = nesta >  Eu moro nesta casa. (I live in this
house.)
em + isto = nisto >  Eão não acredito nisto. (I don’t believe in
this.)
With aquele, aquela and aquilo: (that)
em + aquele = naquele >  Vamos naquele restaurante. (Let’s

go in that restaurant.)
em + aquela = naquela >  Vamos naquela loja. (Let’s go in
that store.)
em + aquilo = naquilo >  Eu penso naquilo. (I’ll think about
that.)

conversational estar
In casual conversation, estar is abbreviated like this:
estou > tô
está > tá
estamos > tamos
estão > tão
This is becomming the accepted standard, preferred form of
speaking the verb estar. In written Portuguese the non-
abbreviated form is always used.
Eu estou aqui. > Eu tô aqui. (I'm here.)

Como você está? > Como você tá? (How are you?)

demonstrative pronouns
There are three different words for saying this and three for that.
Which one you use depends on the gender of the thing you’re
talking about.
This & That (conversational)

m=masculne, f=feminine, n=neutral
this (m) > esse: Esse carro é seu? (Is this your car?)
that (m) > aquele: Aquele prédio é alto. (That's a tall
building.)
this (f) > essa: Adoro essa loja! (I love this store!)
that (f) > aquela: Quero aquela roupa. (I want that shirt.)
this (n) > isso: O que é isso? (What is this?)
that (n) > aquilo: Tem nada a ver com aquilo. (It has nothing
to do with that.)
*All of these contract (combine) with any other prepositions or
articles that come before them (contractions with em

Ficar can be used to say to stay (remain), to be located as well
as to become (get).

You can use ir (to go) to say where you’re going right now, or
what you’re going to do later on. Either way you just need to
know how to conjugate ir in the present tense. It’s (very)
irregular.

Eu vou à praia. (I'm going to the beach.)

Eu vou ao supermercado. (I'm going to the supermarket.)
Você vai no banco? (Are you going to the bank?)
Use ir in the present together with any verb to talk about what
you’re going to be doing.
Eu vou correr. (I'm going to run.)

Você vai comer? (Are you going to eat?)
Nós vamos viajar. (We're going to travel.)

ir embora
The phrase vamos embora evolved from the old time phrase
Vamos em boa hora. — meaning, let’s go at a good time (while
spirits are high). It’s current meaning is roughly: go away, leave.
Used it together with the verb ir like this:
Vamos embora logo. (Let's go soon.)

Preciso ir embora. (I need to leave.)
Estamos indo embora. (We're leaving.)
já volto
Já volto means, I’ll be right back. Literally, already, I’m back.
You just need to remember that já means, already. Volto is from
the verb, voltar.
para
Para has two meanings.
(1) to (a place)
You can use either a, or para to express to. In general, using
para implies that you are going to somewhere in order to be
there a while. Usually that’s to your home, to work etc. But
don’t get hung up on this – time is relative
to > Eu vou para o brasil. (I'm going to Brazil.)

to > Você vai para a praia? (Are you going to the beach?)
(2) in order to
in order to > Eu estou aqui para estudar. (I'm here to study.)
in order to > Trabalho para ganhar dinheiro. (I work to earn
money.)

Eu amo meu namorado! (I love my boyfriend!)

present progressive tense

Drop the ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and adding -ando, -endo, -indo
respectively.
Use this to say whats happening right now : I’m working, He’s
surfing, You’re talking, etc. (often called the Portuguese “ing”).

Who’s talking? Quem está falando?
-er verbs
I’m eating. Eu estou comendo

He’s losing. Ele está perdendo
-ir verbs
He’s insisting. Ele está insistindo
She’s driving. Ela está dirigindo

Eu estou trabalhando agora. (I'm working now.)

Você está comendo açúcar? (Are you eating sugar?)

ser & estar

Ser is for somewhat permanent characteristics. Don’t take this
too literally – nothing is truly permanent
very permanent > Meu nome é Raquel. (My name is Raquel.)

somewhat permanent > Eu sou brasileiro. (I'm Brazilian.)
not so permanent > Ele é casado. (He's married.)
Estar is for temporary passing things.
Eu estou cansado. (I'm tired.)

Como você está? (How are you?)

Just like any verb, you can use ser (to be) in it’s infinitive.
It's good to be Brazilian! > É bom ser brasileiro.

Use todo mundo to express everyone. It literally means: the
entire world.
Todo mundo quer morar aqui. (Everyone wants to live here.)

What’s your name?

In Portuguese, there are two common ways to ask someone
what their name is.
Como se chama?
In, Como se chama? you are literally saying, “How are you,
yourself called?” – and the se is the part that says you, yourself.
Como se chama? (How are you called?)

Eu me chamo Gabriela. (I call myself Gabriela.)
Qual é seu nome?
When you say, Qual é seu nome? you’re saying, “Which is your
name?”
