Passive Voice Indirect Object
Passive Voice Indirect Object
A sentence can have two possible passive voices when it takes two objects: a direct object
and an indirect object. Normally, it is the indirect object (the object that appears first in an
active sentence) which becomes the subject of the passive sentence. We can however
also use the direct object as the subject.
Some verbs, such as GIVE, ASK, TELL, OFFER, PROMISE, SEND, SHOW, TEACH and
PAY, can have two objects: DIRECT and INDIRECT. Either the direct object or the indirect
object can become the subject in a passive sentence.
This other type of object (IO) is the recipient of the direct object. It answers the questions:
to whom
for whom
for what.
An indirect object is very often a person while a direct object is usually a thing. When a
direct object is followed by an indirect one, we put ´to´ in front of the indirect object.
Example 1:
DIRECT OBJECT
ACTIVE: SUBJECT + VERB + INDIRECT OBJECT + DIRECT OBJECT
PASSIVE VOICE:
DIRECT OBJECT
Examples:
o Active: Jack sent Jill a large bouquet of white and red roses.
o Passive 1: A large bouquet of white and red roses was sent to Jill.
o Passive 2: Jill was sent a large bouquet of white and red roses.
