PASSIVE VOICE: INDIRECT OBJECT

A sentence can have two possible passive voices when it takes two objects: a direct object
and an indirect object. Normally, it is the indirect object (the object that appears first in an
active sentence) which becomes the subject of the passive sentence. We can however
also use the direct object as the subject.
Some verbs, such as GIVE, ASK, TELL, OFFER, PROMISE, SEND, SHOW, TEACH and
PAY, can have two objects: DIRECT and INDIRECT. Either the direct object or the indirect
object can become the subject in a passive sentence.
This other type of object (IO) is the recipient of the direct object. It answers the questions:
to whom
for whom
for what.

ACTIVE: SUBJECT + VERB + INDIRECT OBJECT + DIRECT OBJECT

An indirect object is very often a person while a direct object is usually a thing. When a
direct object is followed by an indirect one, we put ´to´ in front of the indirect object.
Example 1:

o Marcy gave to her mother a painting.

1. Who's the subject?: Marcy.

2. What action did Marcy do?: She "gave" something.
3. What did she give?: A painting.
At this point, we know that the object is the painting.
A painting was given.
4. To whom does she give the painting?: To her mother.
By answering to whom, we understand that her mother  is the indirect object. It is the
recipient of the direct object.
PASSIVE VOICE 1: A painting was given. to her mother
A painting was given by Marcy.
PASSIVE VOICE 2: Her mother was given a painting.
