Martin é autor e roteirista quatro anos antes do quinto (A Dança
de filmes de ficção científica norte-
americano. Conhecido mundialmente
por escrever a série literária “As
Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo”, que ganhou
uma adaptação televisiva pelo canal
HBO, denominada “Guerra dos
Tronos”. George Raymond Richard
Martin nasceu em 20 de setembro de
1948, New Jersey. Filho de um
estivador, desde a infância era fascinado
por quadrinhos, livros e por escrever
contos de ficção e horror.
Na adolescência costumava vender seus
contos para outras crianças da
vizinhança. Desde jovem, George se
interessava por fazer jornalismo, e
assim seguiu para a Universidade
Northwestern em Illinois, onde se
formou em Jornalismo com muitos
elogios. Em 1971, Martin completou o
seu mestrado.
Depois de tentar incessantemente
publicar alguns de seus contos e
histórias, sem muito sucesso, George
passa a trabalhar como roteirista de TV,
escrevendo alguns episódios das séries
fantasiosas “Além da Imaginação”, “A
Bela e a Fera” e algumas outras séries
menores. Nessa época o autor também
trabalhou como editor de livros.
Então, em 1991, George começa a
escrever uma fantasia inspirada na
Guerra das Rosas, no início sem muitas
pretensões de publica-la, mas acabou
fazendo-o mais tarde, em 1996 é
lançado nos EUA o primeiro volume de
uma saga literária com o título “As
Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo” no Brasil, que
se encerrou no sétimo livro em 2011.
Apesar das publicações distantes entre
os volumes do romance e escrevendo
vários contos em seus hiatos, em 2007,
dois anos após o lançamento do quarto
volume (O Festim dos Corvos) e o
dos Dragões), os direitos de “As
Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo” foi comprado
pelo canal televisivo HBO, que com a
ajuda do próprio autor, produziu uma
série épica baseada em sua obra, que
ganhou o nome do primeiro livro da
saga, “A Guerra dos Tronos”.
Com a série televisiva ganhando boas
críticas e juntando muitos fãs, os livros
da série “As Crônicas de Gelo e Fogo”
dispararam em vendas, sendo que todos
os cinco livros já ficaram ao menos
entre os vinte livros mais vendidos no
Brasil. Enquanto isso acontece, George
Martin se torna um autor conhecido e
começa a receber convites para
palestras, prêmios de reconhecimento e
passa a ser um dos mais conhecidos
escritores de fantasia.
Em 15 de fevereiro de 2011, George
R.R. Martin casou-se, com Parris
McBride. Foi dito que ele e Parris
trocaram alianças inspiradas em anéis
célticos, feitos sob encomenda por
artesões especializados.
