Paul loved his work on the newspaper.
Paul amava seu trabalho no jornal.
He worked hard, but he did not forget Maria.
Ele trabalhou muito, mas não esqueceu Maria.
One day, a reporter came into the office.
Um dia, um repórter entrou no escritório.
'Listen everybody,' he said. 'Here's a story for the paper.
“Escutem todo mundo”, disse ele. “Aqui está uma história para o jornal.
Do you remember that beautiful girl, Maria, and her rich husband?
Você se lembra daquela linda menina, Maria, e de seu marido rico?
There was a photograph of the wedding in our paper.
Havia uma fotografia do casamento em nosso jornal
She ran away from her husband last week!'
Ela fugiu do marido na semana passada!
Everybody in the office stopped talking.
Todos no escritório pararam de falar.
This was news! Paul sat still. He felt cold.
Isso era novidade! Paul ficou quieto.
Maria left her husband! he thought. Why?
Ele sentiu frio. Maria deixou o marido! ele pensou. Por quê?
They were married only a few months ago.
Eles se casaram há apenas alguns meses.
The reporter was still talking.
O repórter ainda estava falando.
The girl's mother died last week,' he said.
A mãe da menina morreu na semana passada ', disse ele.
'She heard the news and the shock killed her.'
- Ela ouviu a notícia e o choque a matou.
That ugly old woman, thought Paul.
Essa velha feia, pensou Paul.
'The mother was rich, wasn't she?' somebody asked.
- A mãe era rica, não era? alguém perguntou.
'Oh yes, she was very rich,' said the reporter.
“Ah, sim, ela era muito rica”, disse o repórter
'Maria will have all her money, of course.
- Maria ficará com todo o dinheiro, é claro.

And her husband gave her a lot of money, clothes, jewels, and a car.
E seu marido deu a ela muito dinheiro, roupas, joias e um carro.
Maria is a very, very rich woman.'
Maria é uma mulher muito, muito rica.
'I don't like rich women,' said another reporter.
' “Não gosto de mulheres ricas”, disse outro repórter.
'Maria is rich,' said Paul. 'But she is also gentle and kind and . .." he stopped.
“Maria é rica”, disse Paul. - Mas ela também é gentil e gentil e ... - ele parou.
'Do you know Maria?' the reporter asked.

Paul went to the funeral the next day.

It was a long way to the church, but he walked.

He wanted to think.

Maria loved me, he thought.
Maria me amava, ele pensou.
But she married another man.

Why? Because she was afraid of her mother.

But now, her mother is dead!

Paul was happy and he was sad.
Paul estava feliz e triste.
He was at the church now.
Ele estava na igreja agora.
Crowds of people were there. It was a big funeral.
Multidões de pessoas estavam lá. Foi um grande funeral.

There were many big, black cars outside the church.

Havia muitos carros grandes e pretos do lado de fora da igreja.
In the first one was the coffin.
No primeiro estava o caixão.
There were a lot of flowers on the coffin and on the roof of the car.
Havia muitas flores no caixão e no teto do carro.
Paul stood at the back of the crowd.
Paul ficou atrás da multidão.
He took out his pencil and paper.
Ele pegou seu lápis e papel.
He wrote about the cars and the people.
Ele escreveu sobre os carros e as pessoas.
Then he saw Maria. She was wearing a black dress.
Então ele viu Maria. Ela estava usando um vestido preto.
She looked sad, but very beautiful.
Ela parecia triste, mas muito bonita.
She was standing alone. Nobody spoke to her.
Ela estava sozinha. Ninguém falou com ela.
Nobody went near her.
Ninguém se aproximou dela.
The man next to Paul spoke.
O homem ao lado de Paul falou.
That's the daughter,' he said. 'She's a bad woman.
Essa é a filha ', disse ele. 'Ela é uma mulher má.
She left her husband and it killed her mother
Ela deixou seu marido e isso matou sua mãe..
Look at her! Nobody wants to speak to her.'
Olha para ela! Ninguém quer falar com ela. '
Paul said nothing. Poor Maria, he thought.
Paul não disse nada. Pobre Maria, ele pensou.
Everybody went inside the church. The funeral began.
Todo mundo entrou na igreja. O funeral começou.
After the funeral, Paul went home. His mother was smiling.
Após o funeral, Paul foi para casa. Sua mãe estava sorrindo.
'Good news, Paul,' she said. 'Do you remember your cousin, Elsa?
- Boas notícias, Paul - disse ela. - Você se lembra da sua prima, Elsa?
She is coming to stay with us.
Ela está vindo para ficar conosco.

She is seventeen now, and very pretty. You will like her.'
Ela tem dezessete agora e é muito bonita. Você vai gostar dela.
'Yes, I remember Elsa,' said Paul. He did not look pleased.
- Sim, lembro-me da Elsa - disse Paul. Ele não parecia satisfeito.
His mother was disappointed.
' Sua mãe ficou desapontada.
He is still thinking about Maria, she thought. Elsa will help him to forget.
Ele ainda está pensando em Maria, ela pensou. Elsa o ajudará a esquecer.
But Paul did not want to see Elsa.
Mas Paul não queria ver Elsa.
I must see Maria, he said to himself. 1 must talk to her.
Preciso ver Maria, disse a si mesmo. Devo falar com ela.
