Quantifiers: much, many, few...

Substantivos
Os substantivos podem ser contáveis ou incontáveis.
Substantivos contáveis (countable nouns) referem-se a coisas que podemos contar.
Dollars, bottles, liters, kilos, packs, slices, apples, boys, etc.
Dólares, garrafas, litros, quilos, embalagens, fatias, maçãs, meninos, etc.
Substantivos incontáveis (uncountable nouns) referem-se a coisas que não podemos contar.
Money, milk, sugar, bread, meat, liberty, happiness.
Dinheiro, leite, açúcar, pão, carne, liberdade, felicidade.

Uso
Antes de substantivos contáveis usa-se:
Many: muitos(as)
I bought many bottles of milk. (Comprei muitas garrafas de leite.)
Few: poucos(as)
I have few cents; I can’t take a bus. (Eu tenho poucos centavos. Eu não posso pegar um ônibus.)
A few: alguns(mas)
We have a few minutes to talk. (Nós temos alguns minutos para conversar.)
Fewer: menos
You have fewer friends than I do. (Você tem menos amigos do que eu.)

Antes de substantivos incontáveis usa-se:


Much: muito(a)
There wasn’t much milk in the bottles. (Não havia muito leite nas mamadeiras.)
Little: pouco(a)
He has little money; he can’t buy a car. (Ele tem pouco dinheiro. Ele não pode comprar um carro.)
A little: algum(a)
We have a little time to talk. (Nós temos algum tempo para conversar.)
Less: menos
I have less time than you. (Eu tenho menos tempo que você.

A lot of, lots of, plenty of podem substituir much e many em frases afirmativas.
We have a lot of friends. (Nós temos muitos amigos.)
Very: muito (usado para enfatizar)
She’s very tired. (Ela está muito cansada.)

Nota Importante

Alguns substantivos são contáveis em outros idiomas, mas incontáveis em inglês. Nesses casos,
eles devem seguir as regras dos substantivos incontáveis.
