ACTIVITY B

Read the following text.

The developed nations of the world have become rich but the environmental costs are
high. Scientists, ecologists and politicians now agree that the main cause of global warming
has been 100 years of industrial pollution.
Ironically, the poorer nations, who contribute little to greenhouse gas emissions, are
5 suffering a lot. Small islands like Tuvalu in the South Pacific could disappear because of the
rise in sea-level. In Bangladesh, cyclones could result in 20 million environmental refugees.
The governments of Bangladesh and Tuvalu are asking the richer countries to take stronger
measures to limit their gas emissions. Environmentalist Aubrey Meyer warns that billions of
people could die in the future decades as a result of exaggerated consumption by rich nations.
10 The United Nations has identified global warming as one of the big enemies of the future
of our planet. But this is only one of the problems caused by the consumption of the earth’s
resources. According to Klaus Topfer of the United Nations Environment Programme, the
causes of most environmental problems are extreme poverty and extreme wealth. UNEP and
other environmental agencies have asked rich countries to cut their use of natural resources
15 by 90% to give the rest of the world an opportunity to escape poverty.
Scientists, businessmen and politicians all have their parts to play in solving the earth’s
environmental problems. But the final answer is in each one of us. A little less wasting and a
little more saving will help the planet.
