O ELA – Espaço Luanda Arte, re-
cebeu na sua nova morada, e em
simultâneo, as mostras indivi-
duais “Arte, Natureza e Objectos”,
do conceituado Van, e “Libota Ya
Motema”, de Uólofe Griot, recente-
mente premiado na XVI Edição da
ENSARTE com o Grande Prémio de
Pintura. A mesma galeria acolheu
a mostra “Quadros de Guerra, Cor-
pos de Luto”, da pintora Yola Ba-
langa cujas obras exploram o uni-
verso feminino. Já na galeria do
Banco Económico, Sérgio Lumingo
exibe a sua primeira exposição in-
dividual, “Estética de Lenhas”.

O grupo Elinga Teatro encerrou
a 12ª edição do Festival de Tea-
tro Lusófono (FestLuso) 2022, que
decorreu na cidade brasileira de
Teresina/Piauí no passado mês de
Agosto. O palco do Theatro 4 de
Setembro recebeu a peça “Amêsa
ou a Canção do Desespero”, com
texto e encenação de José Mena
Abrantes, interpretação de Clau-
dia Rosa Pucuta e Sunny Dilage.
No festival participaram, além do
Elinga, grupos teatrais do Brasil,
Portugal, Moçambique, Guiné Bis-
sau, Cabo Verde e Argentina.

lanas, António Pascoal Fortunato
é considerado dos mais importan-
tes compositores da sua geração e
deixa clássicos como “Monangam-
bé” ou “Undengue Uami”. Nascido
no dia 6 de Junho de 1940, em São
José de Icolo e Bengo, cedo se apai-
xonou pela música, que o acom-
panhou toda a vida. Passou pelos
Ngola Ritmos, compôs canções re-
volucionárias, musicou poemas de
Agostinho Neto e Jofre Rocha, fez
parceria com o Duo Canhoto. Como
intérprete lançou, em 2015, o ál-
bum "Mafumeira”, com temas em
kimbundu e português.

o sobrevoarmos o Soyo, em aproximação ao aeroporto
Comandante Ndozi, antecipamos o momento do desem-
barque num terreno marcado pelos rios e canais, ilhas e
ilhotas, mangues e lagoas que resultam da chegada ao Atlânti-
co do imenso caudal do Rio Congo, ou Zaire, o seu outro nome,
que também empresta à província.
Depois de uma distante viagem desde a sua nascente, no norte
da Zâmbia, o segundo rio mais longo de África, e um dos maio-
res do mundo, chega finalmente ao seu destino, carregando na
escura corrente as histórias e canções, cheiros e sabores, ima-
gens e emoções de todos os territórios que atravessa. Perto
da chegada, acelera o ritmo como um viajante que anseia por
partilhar com todos aquilo que viveu. Ao encontrar o oceano, a
intensa corrente de água doce choca com a barreira salgada do
oceano e espalha-se sobre os terrenos vizinhos, inundando-os.

s we fly over Soyo, approaching the Comandante Ndozi
airport, we anticipate the moment of landing in a land
marked by rivers and canals, islands and islets, mangroves
and lagoons that result from the arrival in the Atlantic of the im-
mense flow of the Congo River, or Zaire, its other name, after which
the province is named.
After a long journey from its source in northern Zambia, the sec-
ond longest river in Africa, and one of the largest in the world,
finally reaches its destination, carrying in its dark current the sto-
ries and songs, smells and flavors, images and emotions of all
the territories it crosses. Close to arrival, it picks up the pace like
a traveler who longs to share with everyone what he has experi-
enced. Upon reaching the ocean, the intense fresh water current
collides with the ocean's salt barrier and spreads over the sur-
rounding land, flooding it.

gos ou mesmo para se fixarem
do lado de cá do rio e da fron-
teira. Ao longo da Estrada Na-
cional 100 – que depois de co-
meçar em Cabinda retoma aqui
o seu curso junto à costa para
percorrer o país até ao Cunene
– atravessamos a cidade para
sermos surpreendidos por um
extenso mercado onde se vende
de tudo um pouco, à sombra de
coloridas sombrinhas que pro-

As we leave the airport, we
get caught up in the seeming-
ly chaotic bustle of the center
of this city, which for centuries
has been located on the left
bank of the river. The old town
of Santo António do Zaire is
now an expanding border zone,
where many Congolese arrive
to do business, visit relatives
and friends, or even to settle on
this side of the river and bor-
der. Along National Road 100
- which starts in Cabinda and
resumes here its course along
the coast to cross the country
and head towards Cunene - we
cross the city to be surprised by
an extensive market where a lit-
tle of everything is sold, under
the shade of colorful umbrellas
that protect the locals and out-
siders from all over the world,
workers at the Kwanda base,
where the main oil companies
operating in Angola are based. If
it is oil that immediately comes
to mind when we hear the name
Soyo, the truth is that its flooded
lands have many other attrac-
tions waiting for visitors. Starting
with the beautiful surroundings,
from the extensive beaches on
the Atlantic coast that overlook
the region to the west, to the
leafy banks of the great Congo
and its tributaries that invite an
incursion into the interior of the
continent. Landscapes capable
in search of sun and tranquility,
whether the more adventurous
who do not dispense with good
adventures or the more curious
who like to get to know the plac-
es of history and its stories.
It was here, on the island of
Ponta do Padrão, that, in 1483,
Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão

para uma aventura pelos ca-
nais da maior e mais preser-
vada reserva de Mangais do
país. Tal como não recusamos
uma ida a praias como a dos
Pobres ou, mais a sul, as do Ki-
fuma e do Tombe, escondidas

e Artes. Confessa-se muito feliz “num país que não me viu nascer, mas onde cheguei muito jovem e onde todos os
dias conquisto amizades e adquiro novos conhecimentos”.

A graduate in Modern, Contemporary and Folk Dance from Cuba's National School of Arts, Minerva Jacas worked
as a classical ballet teacher in Havana before arriving in Angola, where, for over 30 years, she has dedicated her
professional life to Dance. "I participated in school events to develop Angolan folkloric dance and worked at the
National Arts School of Angola as a choreographic composition teacher. I formed an artistic group with the objective
of spreading the dance, because of the importance it has in education." In 2002, she went back to school, graduating
as a clinical psychologist and later as a psychoanalyst. She explored dance therapy, a specialty of occupational
therapy. "I feel very useful with my work," she summarizes. In 2022, she was called by the Ministry of Culture to be
part of the jury of the National Culture and Arts Award. She confesses she is very happy "in a country where I was
not born, but where I arrived at a very young age and where every day I make friends and acquire new knowledge".

nossas religiões, da herança do
Kongo, dos Iorubás”, no palco
do El Gran Palenque, casa de es-
pectáculos junto ao passeio ma-
rítimo Malécon, e que também
acolhe o projecto Sábado de la
Rumba, uma mistura de danças
e batuques religiosos seculares e
afro-cubanos.
Mas as sugestões de Miner-
va Jacas vão além da dança e
da música. “Temos muitos mu-
seus”, destaca, aproveitando
para enumerar aqueles que são
dedicados a outros três símbo-
los de Cuba: “o do Tabaco, o do
Rum e o do Automóvel”.
Mais que pela sua gastronomia,
Cuba é conhecida pelos mui-
tos cocktails que deu ao mun-
do: o Mojito, o Daiquiri, a Piña
Colada, o Cuba Libre, ou o me-
nos conhecido Cancháncha-
ra, à base de rum, mel e limão.
Aqui, Minerva destaca a Bode-
guita del Medio, famosa pelo

durada à entrada, quem conhe-
ce a lenda depressa compreende
o movimento. Trata-se da porta
do bar La Bodeguita del Médio,
um dos mais famosos espaços
de Havana.
Aqui, mais que a ementa de sa-
bores crioulos (como o pernil
de porco, o feijão preto, a man-
dioca à moda de Havana, os
torresmos ou os patacones), é
uma bebida que atrai os clien-
tes: o Mojito, cuja criação a Bo-
deguita reclama para si. O fa-
moso cocktail que mistura rum,
limão, açúcar, soda, folhas de
“herba buena” (hortelã) e gelo
tem sido servido neste bar des-

n the heart of Habana Vieja –
the historic center of the Cu-
ban capital – when you walk
down the old Calle Empedra-
do, it is surprising how many
tourists line up to enter one of
the buildings. After consult-
ing the sign hanging at the en-
trance, those who know the leg-
end quickly understand why. It is
the door of the La Bodeguita del
Médio bar, one of the most fa-
mous places in Havana.
Here, more than the menu of Cre-
ole flavors (such as pork shank,
black beans, Havana style man-
ioc, cracklings or patacones), it
is a drink that attracts custom-
ers: the Mojito, whose creation
the Bodeguita claims for itself.
The famous cocktail that mixes
rum, lemon, sugar, soda, "herba
buena" (mint) leaves and ice has
been served at this bar since its
opening in 1942.
Founded under the name Casa
Martinez, it sold mainly typi-
cal Cuban products, and soon
the cocktail became the main-
stay of its drinks list, helping to
gain a bohemian clientele that
gave it popularity. Writers Pab-
lo Neruda and Gabriel García
Márquez, singer Nat King Cole,
and politician Salvador Allende
were among the loyal regulars,
and some left dedications on the
walls, in a ritual that has been
perpetuated until today. Curi-
ously, Ernest Hemingway, who
is said to have nicknamed his
Mojito "The Best in the World",
was not so regular and even the
authorship of the message with
his name is disputed, helping to
prolong the myth. Among the
picturesque monuments, forts,
churches and palaces of the old
quarter, Bodeguita shines on a
street with almost no history
– except its own. It is said that
its name is due to the way Fe-
lito Ayon, a friend of the owner,
Martinez, and a publisher with
an office set up nearby, used to
tell his friends about its location
when he invited them for a drink
at any time of the day: "La Bo-
deguita del Medio". The name
stuck and since 1950 this has
been one of the most popular
addresses in the Cuban capital.

asceu em Hamburgo, na Alema-
nha, e dividiu os estudos de Lite-
ratura e Sociologia entre a cidade
natal e Berlim. Sempre se sentiu atraída
pelas culturas de fora da Europa e admi-
te ter tido “muita sorte por passar a maior
parte da minha vida profissional na Casa
das Culturas do Mundo, em Berlim, e no
Goethe-Institut”. Convidada por Christia-
ne Schulte, antiga directora do Goethe-
-Institut Angola, a visitar Luanda para a
edição de um catálogo sobre cinemas an-
golanos, Gabriele Stiller-Kern desejava
descobrir um território e uma cultura que
pouco conhecia.
Desafiada a assumir a direcção do Goethe-
-Institut Angola, dedicou-se à missão de
aproximar Angola e Alemanha, através de
iniciativas e projectos que agora recorda,
no balanço de uma aventura que teve iní-
cio em 2018 e que a tem fascinado: “Gosto
muito de estar em Angola, cada vez mais,
a cada ano.”
Alguma vez se imaginara a viver em An-
gola? Quais foram as suas primeiras im-
pressões ao chegar?
Na verdade, quando viajei pela primeira
vez do aeroporto para o centro de Luan-
da, pensei: “Meu Deus, que confusão!” Isso
mudou completamente. Agora amo a ci-
dade e aprendi a manter os meus olhos
focados. Há tantos belos edifícios moder-
nistas e coloniais que só se descobrem à
segunda vista. E gosto da azáfama, da vi-
vacidade e da estreiteza dos bairros. Es-
tou muito consciente dos grandes proble-
mas com que os seus habitantes têm de
lidar, mas apetece-me caminhar por uma
grande sala de estar – com muita gente,
muita troca, música e movimento. E An-
gola é um belo país com todos os tipos
de paisagens.

rector of the Goethe-Institut Angola, to vis-
it Luanda for the publishing of a catalog
on Angolan cinemas, Gabriele Stiller-Kern
wanted to get to know this country and dis-
cover a territory and a culture she knew lit-
tle about.
Challenged to take on the management of
the Goethe-Institut Angola, she dedicat-
ed herself to the mission of bringing An-
gola and Germany closer together, through
initiatives and projects that she now recalls
while looking back at an adventure that be-
gan in 2018 and that has fascinated her: "I
really enjoy being in Angola, more and more,
every year."
Had you ever imagined yourself living in
Angola? What were your first impressions
upon arrival?
Actually, when I first traveled from the air-
port to downtown Luanda, I thought, "Oh
my God, what a mess!" That has complete-
ly changed. Now I love the city and have
learned to keep my eyes focused. There are
so many beautiful modernist and colonial
buildings that you only discover at second
glance. And I like the bustle, the liveliness
and the narrowness of the neighborhoods.
I am very aware of the big problems its in-
habitants have to deal with, but I feel like
walking through a big living room – with
lots of people, lots of exchange, music and
movement. And Angola is a beautiful coun-
try with all kinds of landscapes.

Sob a sua direcção, o Goethe-Institut tem esta-
do envolvido em inúmeras actividades e projec-
tos culturais, a começar pelos que promovem
a literatura. Que balanço faz da actividade do
Instituto neste âmbito?
Os eventos com Agualusa e Mia Couto foram
certamente dos nossos maiores sucessos. Impri-
mimos as três "Histórias Kambutas" que Agualu-
sa, Mia Couto e Cynthia Perez produziram em
conjunto com ilustradores e desenhadores grá-
ficos. Neste momento, dedicamo-nos principal-
mente ao género da Banda Desenhada. Os ven-
cedores do workshop que decorreu sob o lema "E
se a África nunca tivesse sido colonizada?" en-
contraram-se em Julho com jovens artistas de
banda desenhada de 13 países africanos no Goe-
the-Institut do Ghana. Juntos desenvolveram
Bandas Desenhadas que serão editadas num li-
vro multilingue, nos países dos artistas partici-
pantes e na Alemanha.

mento e à divulgação do cinema em Angola…
Estamos impressionados e entusiasmados com

Under your direction, the Goethe-Institut has
been involved in countless cultural activities and
projects, starting with those that promote liter-
ature. What is your assessment of the institute's
activity in this field?
The events with Agualusa and Mia Couto were
certainly among our biggest successes. We have
printed the three "Kambutas Stories" that Agua-
lusa, Mia Couto, and Cynthia Perez produced to-
gether with illustrators and graphic designers.
At the moment we are mainly dedicated to the
Comics genre. The winners of last year's workshop
"What if Africa had never been colonized?" met
in July with young comic artists from 13 African
countries at the Goethe-Institut Ghana. Together,
they developed comics that will be published in a
multilingual book, in the countries of the partici-
pating artists and in Germany.
You also worked to support the promotion of
cinema in Angola and the development of the
national Seventh Art...
We are impressed and enthusiastic about the cre-
ativity and artists of Angola. We would like to

tistas… Para o Ciclo Pulungun-
za, recentemente realizado, es-
colhemos o tema dos direitos
da mulher porque estamos
convencidos de que esta luta é
global e liga mulheres de todo
o mundo. Os filmes seleccio-
nados pela curadora Rena-
ta Torres e pelos nossos par-
ceiros europeus contaram as
histórias de mulheres que vi-
vem em Angola, Senegal, EUA,
França, Portugal, Espanha e
Alemanha.
O Teatro não foi esquecido,
nomeadamente através do
apoio ao Anim'art e à orga-
nização do Festeca. Como se
concretizou essa colaboração?
O Goethe-Institut trabalha com
o Anim'art há cerca de seis anos.
O meu antecessor, Manuel Ne-
gwer, iniciou esta cooperação
que estou muito feliz por pros-
seguir e cujo principal objecti-
vo é promover o intercâmbio

de jovens artistas de teatro an-
golanos com jovens artistas da
Alemanha. Há três anos, dez jo-
vens de Luanda viajaram para
Berlim para ali passarem qua-
tro semanas com jovens de lá –
e vice-versa – para produzirem
e apresentarem a peça "A vida é
sonho". Actualmente, estamos a
preparar uma peça tri-nacional.
Sob a direcção de Orlando Do-
mingos (Luanda) e Carlos Ma-
nuel (Berlim), jovens de Angola,
Brasil e Alemanha estão a tra-
balhar na peça "Trade Winds".
Será produzida e realizada em
Berlim, depois virá para Luanda
e depois para Curitiba.

uando, na noite de 13 de Agosto e após a cerimónia de
encerramento da sua 75ª edição, começaram a ser re-
colhidas na Piazza Grande as cadeiras que acolheram
milhares de espectadores, o Festival de Cinema de Locarno dava
por cumprida, novamente, a missão para a qual foi criado: des-
cobrir novas tendências e talentos cinematográficos. Este ano, o
prémio foi atribuído à cineasta brasileira Julia Murat que venceu
Leopardo de Ouro, com o filme "Regra 34".
Entre as películas apresentadas em competição esteve “Nossa
Senhora da Loja do Chinês”, a primeira longa-metragem do rea-
lizador angolano Ery Claver, produzida pelo colectivo Geração
80. Apresentado na secção Cineastas do Presente, recebeu o re-
conhecimento da crítica internacional.

Shop", the first feature film by Angolan director Ery Claver, pro-

cos ou miserabilistas sobre o
nosso país e que tivesse con-
teúdo suficiente para criar
discussão sobre vários aspec-

cluded the screening of "Bullet
Train", his latest film.
Founded in the 1940s, the Locar-
no Film Festival came about as
a response from the Italian re-
gion of Switzerland to the Ven-
ice festival, which was too close-
ly associated with Mussolini's
fascist regime. The first edition
of the new film festival would
eventually take place in 1945, in
the city of Lugano, in the canton
of Ticino. However, for the next
edition, the organization intend-
ed to cut down trees to set up
the giant projection screen, a
plan democratically rejected in
a referendum by the residents
of Lugano. The solution was to
move the event to the garden
of the Grand Hotel in Locarno, a
few kilometers away. On private
land, the space could be altered

início a competição oficial.
Em 1951 e 1956 a realização
foi inviabilizada por proble-
mas financeiras, mas o Fes-
tival só voltou a ser inter-
rompido em 2020, devido à
pandemia da Covid 19, para
ser substituído por uma edi-
ção virtual. Desde 1971, as
exibições noturnas decorrem
na Piazza Grande, com capa-
cidade para acolher mais de
8.000 espectadores, e com
uma das maiores telas ao ar
livre do mundo, ainda hoje
o cenário principal do Festi-
val que ocupa ainda outras
sete salas espalhadas pela
cidade.
Ao longo de décadas, o Fes-
tival exibiu obras de Robert
Rossellini, John Ford, Otto
Preminger, Michelangelo An-
tonioni, Stanley Kubrick. Miloš
Forman, Glauber Rocha, Alain
Tanner, Claude Chabrol, Spike
Lee, Gus Van Sant ou Jim Jar-

was only interrupted again in
2020, due to the Covid 19 pan-
demic, and was replaced by a
virtual event. Since 1971, the
nightly screenings have taken
place in Piazza Grande, capable
of hosting over 8,000 specta-
tors, and with one of the largest
outdoor screens in the world.
The location remains the main
setting for the Festival, which
also uses seven other venues
around the city.
Over the decades, the Festi-
val has shown works by Rob-
ert Rossellini, John Ford, Otto
Preminger, Michelangelo An-
tonioni, Stanley Kubrick Miloš
Forman, Glauber Rocha, Alain
Tanner, Claude Chabrol, Spike
Lee, Gus Van Sant or Jim Jar-
musch, just to name the best
known.
Now in its seventh decade of
existence, it is one of the oldest
film festivals in the world, after
Venice and Cannes, and reveals
an immense vitality. After the
hiatus caused by the pandemic,
the 75th edition saw the number
of tickets grow 60.4% com-
pared to 2021, and accredited
3,530 professionals, among in-
dustry players, journalists and
photographers. The city has
regained its liveliness and in
a time of change, also for the
Seventh Art, it faces the future
with optimism.

angula Santo, trintão, alcoólatra e ateu con-
fesso, começou a falar a Jesus duas vezes
ao dia: à ida para o trabalho e no regresso.
Fazia-o à porta da igreja próxima da sua casa.
De manhã, dizia:
– Bom dia, Senhor Jesus! Agora vou trabalhar.
Não me deixe só beber muito! Amém?
Ao fim do dia, relatava:
– Boa tarde, Senhor Jesus! Hoje, só bebi xis cerve-
jas. Obrigado e até amanhã.
O xis, de 13, no primeiro dia, descera para cinco,
uma semana depois.
Kangula sentia-se cada vez mais tentado a cris-
tianizar-se, o que a sua mãe queria muito.
No sétimo dia, confessou:
– Amigo Senhor Jesus, creio que não estou a dei-
xar de chupar só à toa, não: tem aí a Sua mão,
como diz a minha mãe. Obrigado, viu?
No 13º dia, quando, na véspera, o xis iguala-
ra duas cervejas, não ouviu o despertador tocar.
Saiu à pressa e, sem passar pela igreja, foi apa-
nhar o candongueiro.
Perto da paragem próxima do serviço, um ca-
mião embateu no táxi, e o balanço foi triste: dois
passageiros mortos, dois em estado de coma e
uma dezena de feridos.
Kangula saiu do coma às 13 horas do dia seguin-
te. Ao saber que estava paraplégico, murmurou:
– Boa tarde, amigo Senhor Jesus! Ouviu o doutor,
não é? Por favor, faça com que eu feche os olhos
de vez agora. E cuide, por favor, da minha mãe,
que tanto insistiu para pôr nas Suas mãos o meu
problema com o álcool. Ah! A propósito, obriga-
do, Amigo; estávamos quase lá!
Caiu então num torpor do qual não saiu, nem
mesmo quando, duas horas mais tarde, familia-
res e amigos o foram visitar.
– Tem a certeza de que ele já saiu do coma e está
só a dormir, Doutor?
A esta, da namorada, e a parecidas interrogati-
vas, da mãe, da irmã, do irmão e de outras pes-
soas que se iam sucedendo na enfermaria, o mé-

Jesus twice a day: on his way to work and
on his way back.
He did this at the door of the church near his house.
In the morning, he would say:
– Good morning, Lord Jesus! I'm going to work
now. Please, don't let me drink too much! Amen?
At the end of the day, he would report:
– Good afternoon, Lord Jesus! I only drank an ‘x’
amount of beer today. Thank you and see you
tomorrow.
The ‘x’, which meant 13 beers on the first day, had
dropped to five a week later.
Kangula was increasingly tempted to become a
Christian, which his mother wanted very much.
On the seventh day, he confessed:
– Lord Jesus, my friend, I don't think I'm cutting
down on my drinking on my own, no: You are giv-
ing me a hand, as my mother would say. Thank
you, ok?
On the 13th day, preceded by a day when the ‘x’ had
equaled two beers, he didn't hear the alarm clock
ring. He left in a hurry and, without stopping by the
church, went to catch the candongueiro.
While approaching the stop next to his work, a
truck hit the cab, and the result was sad: two pas-
sengers dead, two in a coma, and about ten injured.
Kangula came out of the coma at 1 pm the next
day. Upon learning that he was paraplegic, he
muttered:
– Good afternoon, Lord Jesus, my Friend! You
heard the doctor, right? Please make me close my
eyes for good now. And please take care of my
mother, who insisted so much that I put my alco-
hol problem in Your hands. By the way, thank you,
Friend; we were almost there!
He then fell into a daze from which he did not
emerge, not even when, two hours later, family and
friends came to visit him.
– Are you sure he's out of the coma and is just
sleeping, Doctor?

Veio a noite, e Kangula viu-se a

a banhar-se na pequena pisci-
na natural de águas termais de
uma nascente, feliz memória
da sua infância.
Súbito, aproximou-se dele uma
pomba de plumagem preta lu-
zidia. Envolvia-a uma aura áu-
rea, no momento em que, de
asas abertas, pairou no ar à sua
frente e arrulhou uma men-
sagem que ele não conseguiu
entender, mas que lhe causou
uma balsâmica sensação de
paz e felicidade.
E de mais não se lembrava de
manhãzinha, ao ser acordado
por uma enfermeira, para con-
trolo do seu estado e aplicação
de uma injeção para as dores
que já deixara de sentir.
Um pouco mais tarde, à hora
em que habitualmente sauda-
va Jesus à ida para o trabalho,
entrou um homem na enfer-
maria. Trintão, esbelto, vestido
de branco, cabeludo e barbudo,
mal transpôs a porta, cumpri-
mentou jovialmente:
– Bom dia, vizinho e amigo se-
nhor Kangula Santo!
– Vizinho… amigo… Será que
também perdi a memória? Não
me lembro do senhor, e não é
hora de visitas!
– Sou o amigo a quem costuma
falar duas vezes ao dia, à fren-
te da igreja.
– Não! Não acredito! Só posso
estar a delirar…
– Já vai acreditar: levante-se e
vá para casa, pois está curado!
Vou ficar à espera da sua visita
ainda hoje, hein?
Dito isso, Jesus transformou-
-se na pomba que o ex-enfer-
mo vira no sonho e saiu pelas
vidraças da janela, como um
holograma.
O eco dum urro demoníaco de
raiva fez-se então ouvir, e os
móveis da enfermaria estreme-
ceram, apavorando os outros
enfermos, a quem Jesus não se
dera a ver nem a ouvir.

He was sorry he couldn't wake
him up, and although he had
no hope other than the mean-
ing of his umbumbu nickname,
he tried to instill some in people:

Night came, and Kangula found
himself walking the footpaths of
the Black Rocks of Pungo-a-N-
dongo, the region where he was
born. He was also bathing in a
small natural pool of hot spring
water, a happy memory from his
childhood.
Suddenly, a dove with luminous
black plumage approached him.
A golden aura enveloped it as
it hovered in the air in front of
him with its wings outstretched
and cooed a message that he
couldn't understand, but that
gave him a balmy feeling of
peace and happiness.
And he couldn't remember any-
thing else when he was woken
up in the morning by a nurse
who needed to have his condi-
tion checked and give him an in-
jection for the pain he no longer
felt.
A little later, at the time he usu-
ally greeted Jesus on his way to
work, a man came into the in-
firmary. Thirty years old, slen-
der, dressed in white, hairy and
bearded. As soon as he stepped
through the door, he greeted him
jovially:
– Good morning, neighbor and
friend Mr. Kangula Santo!
Neighbor... friend... Have I lost my
memory too? I don't remember
you sir, and it's not visiting time!
– I'm the friend you usually talk
to twice a day in front of the
church.
– No! I don't believe it! I can only
be delirious...
– You'll believe it now: get up
and go home, you're cured! I'll
be expecting your visit later to-
day, ok?
Having said this, Jesus trans-
formed himself into the dove that
the former paraplegic had seen in
the dream, and left through the
window, like a hologram.
Then a demonic roar of rage
echoed, and the furniture in the
ward shook, terrifying the other
patients, whom Jesus had nei-
ther seen nor heard.

wana Afrika! Em swahíli e kikongo, signi-
fica “filho(a) de África” e foi este o nome
escolhido por Sandra Quiala para o pro-
jecto que começou a desenvolver há cerca de uma
década. Um projecto de tal forma pessoal, que a
autora acabou por assumir o seu nome, que se
popularizou à medida que desenvolveu uma série
de iniciativas destinadas a promover uma nova
imagem de África e a alterar a forma como o Con-
tinente e a sua História têm sido apresentados.
Em 2011, criou um blog onde se propôs revelar a
alma africana, a partir de uma nova abordagem
sobre as suas civilizações, heróis, conquistas, tra-
dições. Economista de formação, Sandra Quiala
acabou por enveredar por uma carreira na comu-
nicação, procurando, também por esta via, mo-
dificar a forma como as notícias sobre África são
divulgadas nos media. Considerando que a tele-
visão podia ser um instrumento certo para a pro-
moção da africanidade, sobretudo junto dos mais
novos, apostou neste meio.
Passou pelos canais televisivos da portuguesa
RTP-África, da brasileira Trace Brasil e apresen-
tou, na TPA 2 e TPA Internacional, o magazine
“Mwana Afrika – Oficina Cultural”, uma série de
episódios de três minutos que propõem uma via-
gem por África, abordando os seus povos, cren-
ças, cultura, história, hábitos e costumes. Em Abril
passado, lançou, em Portugal, o livro "(...) Por
Exemplo – O que a História ainda não contou",
que prevê apresentar em Angola ainda este ano.
Partindo “da escassez de conteúdos sobre a nos-
sa verdadeira história nos programas escolares, e

means "son/daughter of Africa" and
this was the name chosen by San-
dra Quiala for the project she began developing
about a decade ago. It was a project so person-
al that the author ended up taking on its name,
which became popular as she developed a series
of initiatives aimed at promoting a new image of
Africa and changing the way the continent and
its history have been presented.
In 2011 she created a blog to reveal the African
soul, through a new approach to its civilizations,
heroes, conquests, traditions. An economist by
training, Sandra Quiala eventually embarked
on a career in communication, also seeking to
change the way news about Africa are dissem-
inated in the media. Considering that television
could be the right tool for promoting African-
ness, especially among young people, she in-
vested in it.
She has been on television channels such as
Portuguese RTP-Africa, Brazilian Trace Brasil
and hosted on TPA 2 and TPA International the
TV program "Mwana Afrika – Oficina Cultural"
(“Mwana Afrika – Culture Workshop”), a series
of three-minute episodes that took viewers on a
journey through Africa, discussing its people, be-
liefs, culture, history, habits and customs. Last
April she published, in Portugal, the book "(...) Por
Exemplo – O que a História ainda não contou"
(“(…) For Example – What History has not yet
told”), which she plans to bring to Angola lat-
er this year.

dos alunos é magnífica”.
Confessando que a edição de
"(...) Por Exemplo – O que a His-
tória ainda não contou" é a rea-
lização de um sonho muito
antigo, a jornalista e pesquisa-
dora afirma que a obra “mos-
tra o quão necessário é apre-
sentarmos uma África livre dos
estereótipos, do olhar folclóri-
co e exótico. Quero que as novas
gerações percebam que Áfri-
ca tem uma história rica e com-
plexa, apesar da ignorância ge-
neralizada sobre essa herança.
Por isso, há relevância em co-
nhecer a história de África, ain-
da mais quando se busca uma
identidade”.

Terminada a 3ª edição do AiS,

José Bucassa. Este formato hí-
brido era, aliás, a intenção ini-
cial da equipa e o surgimento
da pandemia acabou por con-
solidar esse posicionamento
digital e facilitar a sua imple-
mentação, “porque acelerou a
literacia digital, quebrou bar-
reiras de acesso e aumentou
a propensão para o consumo
de conteúdos digitais”. A equi-
pa do AiS não ignora “o está-
gio dessa transição em alguns
mercados e também alguns
hábitos tradicionais de parti-
cipação em evento, bem como
a existência de marcas que es-
tão um pouco mais inclinadas
para eventos presenciais (ape-
sar de serem mais limitados no
alcance de audiência e logisti-
camente mais pesados)”.
Assim, a 4ª edição, agendada
para 2023, terá um momento
presencial que decorrerá em
Luanda, mas a maior parte
do evento será dominado pe-
la parte digital, que “permite
partilhar e inspirar sem fron-
teiras, tendo oradores do mais
alto nível e a partir de vários
cantos do mundo, e assim ga-
rantir aos participantes e par-
ceiros uma participação aces-
sível em termos logísticos e
financeiros, sempre numa ló-
gica ‘anytime, anywhere’”.

zembro de 2022, do evento

IN 2023
Once the 3rd edition of AiS was
over, those in charge imme-
diately started preparations
for the 2023 edition "which
will include some hybrid mo-
ments". This hybrid format
was, in fact, the team's ini-
tial intention, and the emer-
gence of the pandemic ended
up consolidating this intention
and facilitating its implemen-
tation, "because it accelerated
digital literacy, broke access
barriers, and increased the
propensity to consume digital
content".

digital growth trend, the AiS

the event will in digital for-
mat, which "allows sharing

ders, having high-level speak-
ers from the various corners

affordable participation in lo-
gistical and financial terms,
always in line with the 'any-
time, anywhere' motto.

face-to-face event, "TEx 2022

A TAAG Linhas Áreas de Angola ce-
lebrou, a 8 de Setembro do corren-
te ano, os seus 84 anos de existên-
cia, confirmando o seu espírito de
resiliência e inovação constante.
Trata-se de um marco de longevi-
dade numa história que tem como
ponto de partida a criação da DTA,
em 1938, alongando-se até hoje. A
companhia de bandeira transpor-
ta as cores de Angola e a palanca
negra gigante como símbolo na-
cional. Assim, a história da com-
panhia quase se confunde com a
da própria aviação civil do país. A
TAAG representa-o pelos aeropor-
tos e céus do mundo. No passado,
muitos angolanos em dificulda-
des eram atendidos nos seus escri-
tórios. Estes eram vistos como um
complemento das Embaixadas de
Angola.
Inicialmente apoiado pelos aero-
clubes, o transporte aéreo regu-
lar em Angola tem início em 1940.
Com uma pequena frota compos-

activadas as primeiras linhas re-
gulares entre Luanda - Moçâme-

quase absoluta dos transportes ro-
doviários e ferroviários, causada
pelo conflito bélico.
Em 1991 são criadas duas novas
empresas autónomas: a Angola -
Air Charter, para voos charter de
carga e passageiros, e a Sociedade
de Aviação Ligeira, S.A.R.L., para o
serviço de táxi-aéreo e de fins múl-
tiplos. Posteriormente, a TAAG es-
treita relações com a África Austral
e opera para Lusaka, Joanesbur-
go e Harare. Adquire o seu primei-
ro Boeing 747, em 1997. São abertas
novas rotas para Dubai, Bangui,
Douala, Beijing e têm início os voos
semanais para Havana. A TAAG
adquire aviões da companhia De
Havilland Canada (DHC), do tipo
Dash 8-400, visando as operações
domésticas e regionais. A nível in-
terno, o Serviço Aéreo da Sonangol
entregou formalmente dois Boeing
737-700 à TAAG.
Durante a pandemia, a TAAG as-
sume voos humanitários de apoio
ao combate à Covid-19. Continua
a crescer, conforme o demonstra o
aumento de frequências, a abertu-
ra de novas rotas, tal como Madrid;
a retomada de antigas operações,
como Havana, e o aumento de
frequências para Guarulhos (São
Paulo). São incrementadas onze
novas frequências domésticas que
irão reforçar as ligações existen-
tes entre seis províncias, nomeada-
mente Catumbela, Lubango, Dun-
do, Luena, Ondjiva e Huambo.
A TAAG – Linhas Aéreas de Ango-
la, já foi E.P. e agora é S.A.R.L. Está
a passar por uma “fase de profunda

nal, que implica a recuperação de

private companies. During this pe-
riod, TAAG operates the domestic
flights and starts the regional routes
to S. Tomé and Windhoek. The Lu-
anda - Lisbon routes and the con-
nections to Maputo, Beira and Salis-
bury (now Harare) are operated by
TAP.
After the proclamation of indepen-
dence in 1975, the national compa-
ny TAAG - Angolan Airlines was cre-
ated and negotiations began with
TAP for TAAG's participation in the
Luanda-Lisbon flights. In 1976, with
the arrival in the country of the first
BOEING 737 the jet age began in
Angola. On February 13, 1980, De-
cree No. 15/80 was published in the
Diário da República, creating Empre-
sa Linhas Aéreas de Angola, U.E.E.,
abbreviated as TAAG. This was fol-
lowed by the acquisition of the
BOEING 707, initiating TAAG's rap-
id growth, with the start of oper-
ations to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in
1985. For years, TAAG was the only
link between the country's cities, due
to the almost total paralysis of road
and rail transport caused by the war
conflict.
In 1991, two new autonomous com-
panies are created: Angola - Air
Charter, for cargo and passen-
ger charter flights, and Sociedade
de Aviação Ligeira, S.A.R.L., for the
air taxi and multiple purpose ser-
vice. Subsequently, TAAG strength-
ens relations with Southern Africa
and operates to Lusaka, Johannes-
burg, and Harare. TAAG acquires its
first BOEING 747 in 1997. New routes
open to Dubai, Bangui, Douala, Bei-
jing and weekly flights to Havana,
Cuba. TAAG acquires aircraft from
De Havilland Canada (DHC), type
Dash 8-400, for both domestic and
regional flights. In-house, Sonan-
gol Air Service formally handed over
two Boeing 737-700s to TAAG.
During the pandemic, TAAG as-
sumes humanitarian flights in sup-
port of the fight against Covid-19.
TAAG continues to grow as shown
by the increase in frequencies, the
opening of new routes such as Ma-
drid; the resuming of old oper-
ations such as Havana and fre-
quency increase to Guarulhos (Sao
Paulo/Brazil). Eleven new frequen-
cies will reinforce the existing links
in six provinces, namely Catumbe-
la, Lubango, Dundo, Luena, Ondjiva
and Huambo.
TAAG - Angola Airlines, was once an
E.P. and is now an S.A.R.L. It is under-
going a phase of “profound technical
and operational restructuring, which
involves refurbishing aircraft in its
fleet and bringing in new equip-
ment, training and technical training
for employees, as well as hiring new
staff, in view of the greater number
of routes and frequencies scheduled
for the coming months, due to the
airline's resumption of its domestic
flights network”.

Luanda 27-09-2022: A TAAG Linhas Áreas de Angola acaba de receber o re-
latório final da auditoria externa IOSA e que sinaliza o êxito da companhia
de bandeira nacional. Este é um requisito necessário para a renovação do
Certificado de Registo como Operador Seguro, de acordo com as provisões
do Manual do Programa de Segurança IOSA. A auditoria foi realizada em
Maio de 2022 e incidiu sobre as áreas de organização e controlo do sistema
de qualidade, segurança operacional, operações de voo, despacho opera-
cional, manutenção e engenharia, tripulação de cabine, operações terra,
operações de carga e segurança contra actos de interferência ilícita.
Este resultado demonstra o alinhamento da companhia com as melho-
res práticas da indústria aeronáutica internacional.
Paralelamente, a Direcção de Qualidade da TAAG tem efectuado au-
ditorias internas de forma regular no âmbito da aplicação de metodo-
logias preventivas e políticas de melhoria contínua. A auditoria IOSA é
modelo de avaliação de conformidade exaustivo, que reflecte as últimas
revisões regulatórias e melhores práticas da aviação, tendo processos,
metodologias e checklist devidamente estruturados e uma equipa de
auditores altamente especializados.

the IOSA external audit, as stated in the final auditor’s report. This is a
requirement regarding the Certificate Registration renewal as a safe Oper-
ator, in compliance with IOSA Safety Program Manual. The audit occurred
in May 2022 and addressed multiple areas: organization and quality sys-
tem control, operational safety, flight operations, operational dispatch,
maintenance and engineering, cabin crew, ground operations, cargo oper-
ations, and security against acts of unlawful interference.
A solid demonstration of how the company complies with the internation-
al aeronautical industry best practices. Thus, TAAG's Quality Department
perform internal audits regularly, strengthening preventive methodologies
and empowering continuous improvement. The IOSA audit is a rigorous
conformity assessment model based on the latest regulatory reviews and
aviation best practices, with structured processes, methodologies, check-
lists, and specialized audit teams.

CHARISMATIC IN CIVIL AND MILITARY AVIATION
O Comandante João Amaral retirou-se da aviação co-
mercial, por ter atingido o limite de idade (65 anos) pre-
visto pelo Normativo Técnico da ANAC e Anexo 1 da ICAO.
De nome completo João Manuel Romero Fernandez Pe-
res do Amaral, filho de Rui Alberto Peres do Amaral e de
Ilda Romero Fernandez, nasceu a 9 de Setembro de 1957.
Também conhecido por Comandante Sul-Africano, é um
piloto pertencente à primeira esquadra de aviação ango-
lana de helicóptero MI-8 que fez a sua formação, em 1977,
em Frunze, República do Quirguizistão (ex-URSS). Da sua
formação profissional consta a qualificação em Hércu-
les (L100/30); em Boeing 727, na Pan America, em 1993;
assim como a sua qualificação como instrutor de voo na
Pan America, em 1999. No campo profissional constam,
para além dos helicópteros tipo MI-8 na FAPA/DAA, o
Cessna 172, o L100/30 (Hércules) na TAAG e na Transa-
frik; foi Comandante do B-727 na Transafrik e na Air Ge-
mini. Foi igualmente Chefe-Adjunto da Esquadra de He-

Capt. João Amaral retired from commercial aviation,
as he reached the age limit (65 years old) set by ANAC
Technical Standards and ICAO Annex 1. Full name
João Manuel Romero Fernandez Peres do Amaral, son
of Rui Alberto Peres do Amaral and Ilda Romero Fer-
nandez, he was born on 9th September 1957. He is also
known as Captain South African. He is a pilot who be-
longed to the first Angolan aviation squadron of MI-8
helicopters trained, in 1977, in Frunze, Republic of Kyr-
gyzstan (former USSR). Among his professional train-
ing is the qualification in Hercules (L100/30); in Boeing
727, in Pan America, in 1993, as well as his qualification
as flight instructor in Pan America, in 1999. His pro-
fessional experience includes, besides the helicopters
type MI-8 at FAPA/DAS, Cessna 172, L100/30 (Hercu-
les) at TAAG and Transafrik; Captain in B-727 at Tran-
safrik and Air Gemini. He was Deputy Chief of the MI-8
Squadron of FAPA, having left as a captain in the re-

trega de uma lembrança – uma de-
legação liderada pelo DOV, o SPLA
e o seu presidente, bem como o GCI.

uma marca indelével, ao coroar uma
carreira gloriosa de décadas. Uma

representatives of the Chief of Staff
of the Angolan Air Force – who de-
livered a souvenir –, a delegation
led by the DOV, the SPLA and its
president, as well as the GCI. The
Airport Fire Brigade presented the
aircraft's entry on the apron with
the traditional water bath. In ad-
dition to the tributes on the plane,
there was another at the DOV, at-
tended by his close family, and also
on leaving the departure lounge,
where he received loud applause
from a large group of family mem-
bers, friends and colleagues. His
charisma meant that various enti-
ties wanted to be with him at this
very special moment. Through-
out his career, there must have
been several significant dates, but
7 September, the date of his last
flight, is an indelible mark, crown-
ing a glorious career of decades.
