RESUMO
ABSTRACT
Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), caused by Ehrlichia spp, and transmitted mainly by
Rhipicephalus sanguineus. It is a disease present in the clinical routine of dogs, and often
causes great damage to the health and quality of life of patients. The disease has three
phases, namely the acute, subclinical and chronic phase. Dogs infected by Ehrlichia
frequently presented alterations such as lethargy, anorexia, fever, lymphadenopathy,
splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia, hemorrhagic disorders and hypergammaglobulinemia. The
diagnosis of CME is based on the interaction of the history, clinical signs, laboratory
alterations and serological, molecular or direct observation diagnostic tests of the agent. The
observed region presents restriction of information regarding the occurrence of the agent in
the canine population, therefore, the objective of the present study was to determine the
occurrence of Ehrlichia spp. in a blood sample from domiciled dogs in the north of Paraná.
Blood samples with EDTA were awaited at veterinary clinics and laboratories in the
municipalities of Apucarana and Arapongas located in northern Paraná. Blood samples were
observed for DNA capture using a commercial kit and PCR amplification using specific
primers for the agent. The results showed that 10 of the 179 animals (5.58%) tested positive
for Ehrlichia spp. With this study it is concluded that the region studied has the presence of
infection by Ehrlichia spp. in dogs, but broader studies addressing the epidemiology related
to the disease are important to bring more information about the parasite.

2.3 PATOGENIA
A doença possui três fases,
Waner, 2011).
Ocasionalmente a infecção acomete o sistema nervoso, ocasionando sinais

ABSTRACT
Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, caused by the agent Ehrlichia, and transmitted mainly
by the ectoparasite Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is a disease that is often seen in the clinic
of dogs, and often causes great damage to the health and quality of life of patients. With
this in mind, this work aims to bring more information about the occurrence of the
disease in the region in order to contribute to the scientific scenario of the area. To carry
out this work, 179 blood samples were collected from dogs treated in municipalities in
the northern region of Paraná, without distinction of breed, sex or age and that had or
did not have clinical or laboratory alterations suggestive of the disease. Blood samples
were subjected to DNA extraction using a commercial kit and PCR amplification using
specific primers for the Ehrlichia dsb gene. Of the total of 179 samples obtained,
24.02% (43/179) came from veterinary clinics in Arapongas, 37.43% (67/179) from
laboratories in Arapongas, and 38.54% (69/179) from laboratories of Apucarana. Test
results showed that 10 (5.58%) of 179 blood samples from dogs tested positive for
Ehrlichia spp. With this study it is concluded that the region studied has the presence of
infection by Ehrlichia spp. in dogs, but broader studies addressing the epidemiology
related to the disease are important to bring more information about the parasite.
