The United Kingdom may no longer be the largest empire in the world, but in some ways it's
still the center of the universe.
é o centro do universo).
The London district of Greenwich is located on the Prime Meridian, that's longitude 0 or the
measuring point for all distances from east to west.
And Greenwich Mean Time marks the starting point of every time zone in the world. That's
right! The whole world sets his clock by London time.
London is the capital of the UK and is home to 8 million people. Around 13 percent of the
country's population own just 0.6 percent of the total land area. That makes for an average
population density of more than 5,000 people per square kilometer, more than Tokyo, Paris
and New York.
London also leads the way in finance, regularly ranking in the top three most economically
powerful cities in the world. Today London's financial sector employs more than 300,000
people and, thanks to its popularity among the world's billionaires, London boasts the highest
real estate values in the world.
London's also a center for tourism, attracting around 15 million international visitors every
year, more than any other city in the world, except for Paris.
mundo).
London's often on the list of world's top 10 for best parks, 25% of the city (more than 5,000
acres) is parkland with eight Royal Parks, and despite its brown color, the Thames River is
actually the cleanest Metropolitan estuary in Europe, it contains more than 300 species of fish.
But if London is the center of the universe, where exactly is the center of London? Distances
from London to anywhere in the world are traditionally measured from a certain spot in
Charing Cross near Trafalgar Square, there you'll find a replica of the memorial cross laid
along the funeral route of Queen Eleanor in 1290, so if you're standing in front of this Eleanor
cross, you can say you're standing at the exact center of London, which may just be the center
of the universe.
