ABSTRACT
ALMEIDA, Flávio Moreira de. Rubber seed in the feeding of lambs. Itapetinga, BA:
UESB, 2015. 83 p. Thesis. (PhD in Animal Science, Area of Concentration in Ruminant
Production).*
feeding (min / day, min / kg DM, min / kg NDFap) and rumination (min / day min / kg
DM), in contrast, there was a decrease in the time allotted to idleness. There was no
effect of the diets for the number of periods for feeding and rumination, but the time in
minutes by feeding period and increased time for leisure period decreased linearly with
the inclusion of RS in the diets. There was a higher share of time eating and ruminating
and lower participation in leisure time as a percentage of the time (in 24%) with the
inclusion of RS in the diets. The amount of DM consumed during each meal period
decreased linearly to include the RS. Feed efficiency for DM and NDFap, as well as
DM rumination efficiency linearly decreased the inclusion of RS in the diet, and
opposite effect occurred for the number of ruminal bolus (n/d), the amount in grams per
ruminal boluses and the time (h) total chewing. The RS bark presence in the diet may
have been primarily responsible for the limitation in consumption and interference in
the parameters related to rumination. It is recommended to do studies with the bark and
the seed embryo separately for a greater understanding of the role of these components
in the feeding behavior of feedlot lambs. In experiment III, the animals of the
experiment I were slaughtered after 56 days of test in order to evaluate carcass
characteristics and non-carcass components. The final weight of lambs was similar
among the evaluated diets, however was no difference in the empty body weight
(EBW), hot and cold carcass which decreased linearly to the inclusion of RS in the
diets. The yield of hot and cold carcass was negative linear effect, and the cooling for
weight loss there was a quadratic effect and its minimum estimated at 86,66 g/kg of RS.
The carcasses showed a linear decrease in the degree of fat cover and carcass
conformation due to the inclusion of RS in the diets and quadratic effects were observed
for fat thickness with maximum point estimated at 48,44 g/kg RS in diet. There was a
linear decrease in the half carcass weights (HCW), ham and loin. When compared the
average weight of the cuts in percentage per HCW, there was only difference for fillets
presented decreasing linear behavior due to the inclusion of the RS diet. The head
weights, skin, omental, mesenteric fat and total internal fats regressed linearly to the
inclusion of RS in the diets. The proportion of non-carcass components due to the
EBW, only significant effects for the gastrointestinal tract which increased its
proportion in the light of the RS levels in the diets. The use of local products such as the
rubber seed meal lambs can be an alternative to reduce dependence traditionally used in
food containment systems. In experiment IV aimed to assess the digestibility and in
xv
vitro gas production kinetics. For the evaluation of ruminal fermentation kinetics in
vitro were used 64 bottles distributed in 4 experimental diets and 16 replications. The
pressure was measured using a pressure transducer for times of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 17,
20, 24, 28, 34, 48, 72 and 96 hours after incubation. To determine the in vitro
digestibility of diets samples were stored in Ankon polyester bags, and underwent the
same methodological procedure of gas production kinetics. A total of 76 bottles
distributed in four diets, 3 times (12, 24 and 96h), and 6 replicates per time. The
inclusion of the RS provided quadratic effect on the production of gas from the non-
fibrous fraction of the diet and has a peak estimated at 70,59 g/kg RS inclusion in the
diet. The same behavior was observed for the TFV in which the peak is estimated at
57,13 g/kg of RS. The latency period decreased linearly to the inclusion of RS. The
VFCF and degradation rate of fibrous and non-fibrous fractions were not affected by the
inclusion of SS in the diets. Incubation until 12 hours after the start of the procedure
was not sufficient to differences are found for DM substrates. From 24 hours of
incubation was observed significant differences (P <0.05) for DM that have a quadratic
behavior in the estimated maximum point would be found with the addition of 96.25 g /
kg of diet on SS. After 96 hours of incubation, the inclusion of SS inferred linear
decrease the digestibility diet. The rubber seed does not affect the rate and extent of
fermentation of the fiber, but interferes with the use of non-fibrous fractions of the diet,
so it is recommended the use of rubber seed in diets with lower concentrations of these
components.
