The Municipal Museums
There are three distinct museums under the Municipal
authority, which await your visit all year round!
Henrique and Francisco Franco Museum
Located in João de Deus Street this museum offers a wide
collection of oil paintings, drawings, engravings, and small
frescos by the brothers Henrique and Francisco Franco.
To simplify the encounter between the exhibitions and the
visitor there are guided tours, activities, and art ateliers.
Natural History Museum
Funchal Natural History Museum, located in the ancient
and charming São Pedro Palace, was inaugurated on the
5th of October 1933.
Its scientific and cultural purpose, aims to provide visitors
with knowledge about the fauna, flora, and geology of the
Archipelago of Madeira in a simple and dynamic way.
Various species of fish, birds, marine reptiles, mammals,
insects, invertebrates and plants are on display here.
In total, the collections of this museum surpass 37,000
specimens.
City of Sugar Museum
The City of Sugar Museum is located in Praça Cristóvão
Colombo, and is dedicated to the history of the sugar
industry, one of the most emblematic phases of our island,
known as “white gold”.
Highlights include the collection of sculpture, goldsmith-

Museu de História Natural
O Museu de História Natural do Funchal, situa-se no
antigo e encantador Palácio de São Pedro, e foi inaugu-
rado no dia 5 de outubro de 1933.
É um espaço de caráter científico e cultural, que visa
proporcionar ao visitante um conhecimento da fauna,
f lora e geologia do Arquipélago da Madeira de forma
simples e dinâmica.
Aqui estão expostas várias espécies de peixes, aves, répteis
marinhos, mamíferos, insetos, invertebrados e plantas.
No total, as coleções deste Museu, ultrapassam os 37000
exemplares.

Situado na Praça Cristóvão Colombo, em pleno coração da
Cidade, é um espaço dedicado à história da indústria açu-
careira, uma das fases mais conhecidas e marcantes da
história da ilha, conhecida como o ciclo do “Ouro branco”.
Destaca-se também a coleção de escultura, ourivesaria
e mobiliário, património que reflete o poder económico
derivado do ciclo do açúcar.

The real treasure of the Madeiran economy is also a gift
from the islands to the world. And those who have tasted
it know what we are talking about.
Madeira wine is a fortified wine that has been produced
for more than five hundred years, from grapes grown
on the hillsides of the Madeira wine region. It can be
served as an aperitif or after a meal and its flavour and
spirit brought it illustrious admirers such as George
Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Winston Churchill.
Currently, the grape varieties most widely used to
produce Madeira wine are Sercial (dry), Verdelho (medi-
um-dry), Boal (medium-sweet), Malvasia (sweet) and
Tinta Negra (dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet and sweet).
However, there are also other recommended and certified
varieties.

The history of Henriques
& Henriques goes back
to 1850, founded by Joao
Goncalves Henriques,
descendent of a family
established in Camara de
Lobos. After his death in
1912, a partnership was
created between his sons,
João Joaquim and Francisco
Eduardo Henriques, hence
“Henriques & Henriques”.
The Henriques family
played an important role
in the viticulture, and were
known as famous best wine
makers on the Island. In
1913, the family interests
were established as a firm,
and by 1925, the company
concentrated on shipping
its own wines instead of
supplying them to other
shippers.

managed by three brothers,
Luís, Aníbal and Miguel, up
until the latter two died in

The brothers were the direct
descendants of founder João
Pereira D’Oliveira on their

Joaquim Camacho on their

This wine-producing company
represents f ive generations
of extensive knowledge and
experience. It is currently
managed by partner Luís
D’Oliveira, who is in charge
of sales, marketing, exports
and innovation, and by
partner Filipe D’Oliveira

the sixth generation and has
been in charge of production

You can f ind Engenhos do
Norte, in the north coast of
Madeira, Porto da Cruz, the
only steam powered rum
distillery in Europe which
dates back to the beginning
of the 20th Century.
A visit will reveal one of
the most important living
witnesses to the glorious
past of sugar production on
this island.
The distillery at Porto da
Cruz is, indirectly, part
of the important history
of sugar production in
Madeira. During the 15th
and 16 th Century, this island
was the best known sugar
producer in the world, at a
time when sugar was much
more precious than it is
today. The Europeans knew
it as “White Gold” and
used it, as an ostentatious
display of wealth, in cooking
and in the preparation of
sweetmeats.
The distillery at Porto
da Cruz is one of three
old sugar distilleries now
operating in Madeira.
Created in the early 20th
century as
a result of
merging some
of the about
f ifty distilleries
in the island,
still uses the machines of
that time, being the only one
in Europe using steam as a
motive power.
A notable piece of
equipment from the time
is the wood-f ired boiler,
built by Burton Jones & Co.
Ltd of Liverpool. Another
boiler, fueled with wood and
milling waste, was made at
the now defunct ‘Arsenal de
São Tiago’ (a key industrial
milestone for Madeira).
There are several fully
operational steam pumps,
copper vats - used in the
cane molasses – and a
copper coil used in the
manufacture of rum as well
as French ‘Barbet’ stills that
continue to produce rhum
from Madeira sugar cane.

O engenho do Porto da
Cruz está indiretamente
relacionado com a
importante história
açucareira da Madeira. Esta
ilha foi durante os Séc.
XV e XVI a mais afamada
produtora de açúcar no
mundo, precisamente no
período em que este bem
era muito mais valioso
do que é hoje, tanto que
os europeus de então
conheciam-no por “Ouro
Branco” e usavam-no na
culinária, na doçaria e até
como elemento decorativo e
de ostentação.

O engenho do Porto
da Cruz é um dos três
engenhos antigos em
atividade na Madeira. Criado
no início do Séc. XX, como
fruto da fusão de alguns
dos cerca de cinquenta
existentes então na ilha,
utiliza ainda hoje as máquinas
dessa época, sendo o único
na Europa a usar o vapor
como força motriz.
Entre outros equipamentos
dessa época destacamos a
caldeira a lenha, construída
por Jones Burton & Comp.
Lda, de Liverpool, outra
caldeira alimentada com
lenha e com os desperdícios
da moagem, fabricada no
extinto Arsenal de São
Tiago, que foi um marco da
indústria na Madeira, várias
bombas a vapor e em pleno
funcionamento, diversas
tinas em cobre que serviam
para o fabrico do mel,
uma serpentina também
em cobre usada no fabrico
do rum e os alambiques
franceses da marca Barbet
que ainda hoje produzem
Rum Agrícola da Madeira.

a visit to the ‘Casa do Rum’

some liqueurs produced by

A great highlight goes to the
Rum 970 Years 6 Years, a
brand that was created in
1970 and that celebrated
its 50th anniversary in
2020. In 2021, this Rum
was awarded a gold
medal at the Meininger’s
International Spirits Awards.

of traditional handicrafts: the shops are filled with fine
examples of regional handicraft – and the discerning
buyer will soon realise that the superb works of tapes-

a good investment. The Madeira embroidery insdustry
managed to overcome the difficulties, expanding into
diferent markets and adjusting to customer demands .
Though the typical corner shop still survives, modern
shopping centres have elegant boutiques, service
centres, travel agencies, coffee shops and restaurants,
as well as entertainment and sports facilities all
under the same roof. Built to international standards
of modern design, these malls create an almost inde-
pendent “shopping world”, with more extended opening
hours: from early morning till late at night, seven days
a week. Traditional shops are open Monday to Friday
from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2.30 pm or 3 pm to 7 pm; on
Saturdays morning only.
As on the Portuguese mainland, textiles and
leather articles can be real bargains. Specialists
in leatherwear offer the best in shoes, handbags
and wallets.
One can also discover interesting antiques,
particularly old tiles. Another excellent pur-
chase are the beautiful jewellery works of
fine filigree considered genuine pieces of art,
especially those in traditional patterns. Last
but not least: why not try some of Madeira’s
typical fennel sweets? “Funcho” is the
Portuguese word for fennel, an aromatic
herb which once covered the island’s hill-
sides in great quantity. Nowadays used for
tea and sweets, this plant gave its name to
the town, FUNCHAL, where a vast range of
stores awaits your shopping spree!

Dating back to the year
1425, sugarcane culture was
– and still is – of enormous
importance for the Island
of Madeira. Naturally,
1935 saw the beginning
of classic sugarcane syrup
production, while organic
sugarcane syrup made its
f irst appearance in 2012,
with the aim of offering
consumers a product that
was better both for them
and for the environment.
Sugarcane syrup has a
unique and unmistakable
taste and is free from
additives, colourings and
preservatives. It is made
from the juice – called
guarapa – which is extracted
by crushing the cane in mills
called engenhos, followed
by successive f iltering and
boiling until the product

Besides being used to make
sugarcane syrup cake and
biscuits, it is a healthy
alternative to ref ined
sugar, so it is perfect for
sweetening a whole range

aspect, sugarcane syrup is
rich in easily-digestible fast-
absorption carbohydrates,
which are an important
source of energy for our

no fabrico de bolo e broa
de mel-de-cana, é uma
alternativa saudável ao
açúcar refinado, sendo

panquecas, scones, assados
no forno, entre outros.
Em termos nutricionais, o
mel é rico em hidratos de
carbono de rápida absorção
facilmente digeríveis,
importantes como fonte
de energia para o nosso
organismo, sendo um ótimo
aliado para os atletas, que
necessitam de uma rápida
reposição energética,
de forma a minimizar a
sensação de fadiga muscular,
tendo uma composição
vitamínica e mineral
bastante rica.

Prima Caju restaurant started in the most
familiar way possible: in a kitchen, with 3
cousins (Kátia, Cátia and Sara) talking about
food. They complained that it was rare to find
dishes both healthy and delicious. It felt like
health and taste belonged to opposite teams.
They decided to put an end to it. Conversation
leads to conversation, recipe leads to recipe
and before they knew it, in addition to family
ties, they were now united by the bond of
entrepreneurship. They launched Prima Caju,
in the Caju building, Funchal. To create a
familiar, rustic and distinctive atmosphere,
they called Nini Andrade Silva, famous interior
designer. To unleash their gastronomic
creativity, they put together a talented team
that prepares dishes with delicious, healthy
and beautiful ingredients, because you also eat
with your eyes.

O restaurante Prima Caju começou da forma
mais familiar possível: numa cozinha, com
3 primas (Kátia, Cátia e Sara) à conversa
sobre culinária. O tema eram receitas.
Queixavam-se de que era raro encontrarem
pratos que fossem, simultaneamente,
saudáveis e deliciosos. Parecia que saúde
e sabor pertenciam a clubes diferentes.
Resolveram acabar com isso. Conversa puxa
conversa, receita puxa receita e quando
deram por si, além da família, estavam agora
unidas pelo laço do empreendedorismo.
Lançaram o Prima Caju, no edifício Caju,
Funchal. Para criar uma atmosfera familiar,
campestre e distinta, chamaram a célebre
designer de interiores, Nini Andrade Silva.

 Santana, a
Municipality of Nature

Santana is the second-
largest municipality in the
Autonomous Region of
Madeira. It comprises six civil
parishes: Arco de São Jorge,
São Jorge, Ilha, Santana,
Faial and São Roque do Faial,
and is essentially still a rural
municipality. Farming is the
main activity here, with some
tourism development in a
segment that has successfully
preserved tradition.
Well-known for its important
natural heritage, Santana

Church of São Jorge, the
fountain of Santa Ana, the
ancient centre of São Jorge

the various urban-rural hubs
of each of the municipality’s

Santana’s typical
houses
It is thought that these
thatched cottages
are vestiges of early
constructions made of wood
and thatch. The use of these
materials would have been
due to their abundance
and the fact that, in those
days, they would have been
easy and inexpensive to
obtain. The farming of cereal
crops, such as wheat and
rye, would not only have
provided sustenance for
the population, through the
production of flour, but would
also have provided them with
straw (thatch) for use as
roof ing for their homes. It is
likely, therefore, that these
dwellings would mostly have
belonged to people of modest
means, unable to afford more
noble materials. In bygone
days, this was the most

Calcula-se que as casas de
colmo sejam vestígios das
construções primitivas,
feitas de madeira e de
colmo. A utilização destes
materiais devia-se à sua
abundância e, por na época
serem de fácil aquisição
e pouco dispendiosos. O
cultivo de cereais, como
o trigo e o centeio, para
além de proporcionarem
sustento à população,
através da produção
de farinha, permitia o
aproveitamento da palha
(colmo) para a cobertura
das habitações. Podemos
concluir que estas
habitações pertenciam,

mais humildes, que não
tinham posses para adquirir
materiais mais nobres.
Em tempos, este tipo de
construção era o mais usual
em toda a ilha.
