There are two forms for the adjectives in English: a comparative

form (older, more beautiful) and a superlative form (oldest, most
beautiful). When the adjectives is short you take er/est and when
they are long you take more/most. The same as adjective, the
adverbs can have two forms: a comparative form (faster, more
gently) and a superlative form (fastest, most gently). / Existem
duas formas de adjetivos em inglês: forma comparativa (mais velha,
mais bonita) e forma superlativa (a mais velha, a mais bonita).
Quando os adjetivos são curtos você coloca er/est e quando são
longos, mais/o mais. O mesmo acontece com os advérbios, que
também possuem duas formas: forma comparativa (mais rápido/mais
gentilmente) e forma superlativa (o mais rápido, o mais gentilmente).

I'm the youngest woman in my class. / Eu sou a mulher mais nova
da minha sala de aula.

This work is much more difficult than I thought. / Este trabalho é

bem mais difícil do que eu pensava.

My city is the most beautiful city in the world. / Minha cidade é a

mais bonita do mundo.
We can use the comparative in sentences to: / Podemos usar o
comparativo em frases como:

Compare quantities: / Comparar quantidades:

There are more cats in her house. / Tem mais gatos na casa dela.

There's less traffic on weekends. / Tem menos tráfego nos finais de

semana.

Make comparisons: / Fazer comparações:

She is more beautiful than you. / Ela é mais bonita do que você.

Yesterday was the most special day of my life. / Ontem foi o dia
mais especial da minha vida.

Comparative and superlative / Comprativo e superlativo

How can we compare one thing to another? When we say that

someone is smart we just know that this person is smart, but
when we say that someone is smarter, we know that she or he is
smarter than anyone else. We use the comparative form to make
comparison between two things or people. / Como podemos
comparar uma coisa com outra? Quando nós dizemos que alguém é
inteligente apenas sabemos que essa pessoa é inteligente, porém
quando dizemos que essa pessoa é mais inteligente, passamos a
saber que ela é mais inteligente do que outra pessoa. Usamos a forma
comparativa para fazer comparações entre duas coisas ou pessoas.

This is what turns it different from the superlative form. When we

say “she is the smallest”, shows us that out of all the people she is
the one, she is the winner, nobody is smaller than her. Because of
that we use the comparative form we making a comparison
between two things or people, as in the example: 'your book is
bigger than mine'. And when we want to say that something or
someone is unique in that thing then we would have used the
superlative form and say: “He has the biggest feet of everybody
here”. / Isto é o que a torna diferente da forma superlativa. Quando
dizemos “ela é a mais inteligente”, nos mostra que de todas as
pessoas ela é única, a vencedora, ninguém é mais inteligente do que
ela. Por causa disso usamos a forma comparativa para fazer
comparações entre duas coisas ou pessoas, como no exemplo: 'seu
livro é maior do que o meu'. E quando queremos dizer que algo ou
alguma pessoa é única naquela coisa, em algo, então temos que usar
a forma superlativa e dizer: “Ele tem o pé maior que o meu”.

I like you today more than I did yesterday. / Eu gosto de você hoje
mais do que eu gostava ontem.

Of all the songs, that one seems the least deserving of the
award. / De todas as músicas, aquela era a que menos merecia levar o
prêmio.

She is the owner of the best cake ever. / Ela é a dona do melhor bolo
de todos.

I can do it better than you. / Eu posso fazer isso melhor do que você.

He is the youngest man in his hometown. / Ele é o homem mais

novo da sua cidade.

My mother is older than may father. / Minha mãe é mais velha que
meu pai.

Another tips of constructions used in the comparisons are: not

so...as and as...as. / Outros tipos de contruções usadas na
comparação são: não tão...como e tão...quanto.

She is not so shy as me./ Ela não é tão tímida quanto eu.

She is as happy as you are./ Ela está tão feliz quanto nós.

The weather this autumn in my city is as bad as in yours. / O tempo

neste outono em minha cidade está tão ruim quanto na sua.
