It is with great satisfaction that we present the 22nd edition of the Sectorial Report of the Brazilian Textile Industry
– BRASIL TÊXTIL 2022, which compiles the main statistics on the production of textiles and garments in the country,
produced exclusively by IEMI, through its Annual Research Panels.
These panels are powered by direct and individual interviews with thousands of manufacturers from all links in the
production chain, including spinning mills, producers of flat fabrics and knits, processors, non-wovens, apparel and
home textiles, of all sizes and producing regions in the country, which is willing to share information with IEMI, in order
to allow the inference of unique sectoral information, for the country aggregate, and cuts for the large geographic
regions and producing states of the segment.
This information incorporates data from different official sources in Brazil and abroad, such as IBGE, RAIS, SECEX, ITC
and WTO, among others, always with the aim of providing a broad and up-to-date view of the sector. of textiles and
clothing in Brazil and its insertion in international trade.
IEMI’s annual challenge, in addition to producing and organizing all the information that is presented in this publication,
is to make it available free of charge to the main companies included in this extensive production chain, especially to
our informants, to the members of ABIIT and to the participants of the Tex Brasil program, which together make up the
priority group of readers of this report.
To meet this challenge, we are very proud to have the support of ABIT, together with a select group of sponsoring
companies, who share with IEMI the dream of seeing the national textile and clothing industry increasingly prosperous
and relevant for development of the Brazilian economy and global trade in the segment.
To each of our partners, all duly named at the opening of this report, our thanks.
To each of the companies in the sector and other readers of this report, our wish that the content presented here will be
rich enough to generate relevant insights in the planning of their businesses and inspire them in the search for growth,
in this and in the coming years.

BUILDING A NEW FUTURE
After more than two years of pandemic, we emerged on a new planet, in which economic challenges are much more arduous, but also the awareness that
there will be no effective development without social and environmental sustainability has also been consolidated and has become indefectible. It is in this
complex and, at the same time, thought-provoking scenario that Brazil’s textile and apparel industry, resilient and dynamic in the face of Covid-19, is moving,
recovering and determinedly fulfilling its journey into the future.
The sector, a pioneer in the industrialization of the country, continues to play an important role in the recovery of the Brazilian economy, as it is an intensive
generator of jobs, being the second largest creator of the first job and having 75% of its human resources made up of women, most of them heads of families.
The activity remains firmly on the track of the advances of our entire production chain, under the protection of the document Têxtil 2030, updated in the light
of the new national and global reality, with wide market share.
The Brazilian Association of textile and Apparel Industry (Abit) has been very proactive and engaged in the purpose of contributing and supporting the sector
development and the production chain, in a synergistic process with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. This presupposes the
precepts of decent work, environmental and consumer respect, transparency, probity, compliance and reputation. We are fully embedded in the principles of
ESG (environment, Social and (Corporate) Governance), which are increasingly important for business success.
We have also been dynamic in the production and dissemination of knowledge. In this sense, the entity annually promotes its International Congress, which
was held digitally in the pandemic and in 2022 returned to being face-to-face, absolutely consolidated as a reference in the sector. We also conduct courses
and workshops, face-to-face and online, in our own way or in partnership with other institutions, with emphasis on regional SENAI’s, SENAI-CETIQT, University
of São Paulo (Universidade de São Paulo - USP) and Mackenzie Presbyterian University (Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, among other public and
private institutions. During the pandemic, we carry out numerous lives, to disseminate content in the midst of social restriction. Its success has been so great
that it continues to happen.
In other hand, we remained strong and renewed this year the agreement related to Texbrasil, this successful partnership with Apex- Brazil, focused on the
internationalization of our industry and increased exports. There are numerous other initiatives focused on promoting and defending the textile and apparel
industry. We also launched in 2022, together with Sebrae, the “Vista Brazil - Competitiveness and Promotion Program of Micro and Small Enterprises in the
Textile and Apparel Sector”. The initiative aims at increasing sustainable productivity and competitive capacity, as well as generating new business.
These new initiatives are added to others that were already underway, such as the agreement signed in 2021 with the Secretariat of Economic Development
of the State of São Paulo, for the implementation of the MODA.Ind program. The purpose is to promote the competitiveness of the sector, through training
and qualification actions of São Paulo companies. There is also the Center for Sustainability and Circular Economy (Nusec), an initiative of ABIT and SENAI-
CETIQT, formalized in 2020.
Our entity, likewise, is very active in the processes of formulating public and private policies, defending, nationally and internationally, the legitimate
interests of the sector. We were protagonists, for example, in the successful struggle to extend the payroll tax release. This shows how the textile and apparel
industry has been one of the most active in defending legislation more favorable to the good business environment.
On the way to the resumption of the sector and the economy and building a better future, Abit presented to the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic,
with a view to the government to be sworn in January 2023, Agenda for the Development of the Textile and Apparel Industry. The document was prepared
through broad and democratic consultation with entrepreneurs in the sector. Among the priorities listed by respondents, is the realization of the
administrative and tax reforms, already in the first year of the new term of office. The market was lucid in advocating the modernization of consumption
taxation, with the replacement of PIS/COFINS, IPI, ICMS and ISS by IVADual, and the end of the tax war between federative units.
Among the ten main measures advocated by the sector, the following also stand out: combat, with priority and efficiency, any type of corruption of public
agencies and agents; promote an effective public policy to combat piracy, smuggling and the sale of stolen goods, including the hardening of the penalty;
making public security a priority; preserve and strengthen tax rules, such as the spending ceiling and the tax liability law, to curb the tendency of excessive
spending by the government; promote and invest in increasing the quality of health; control the advance of public debt, which has already exceeded 78% of
GDP; and reduce costs for productive investment, through more advantageous credit and taxation.
In the next four years of government, it will be essential for Brazil to solve old problems that, since long before the pandemic, have prevented our development.
We need consistent and long-term public policies, which include the reindustrialization of the country, innovation, education, large-scale job creation,
technological contribution, innovation and sustainability. In this agenda, the textile and apparel industry – whose products are present in the daily lives of
Brazilians, in fashion, different industrial segments, medicine, defense, furniture and automobiles, among many other applications – will continue to play
its part, as a bearer of the future and hope.

No último

More succinctly, the raw materials of fibers and filaments end up being inserted into the industries that
transform them for the use of the spinning link. There are two main types of fiber: natural and chemical.
From the spinning mill, the yarn is sent to the weaving mill, where the fabric is formed, and after the finishing
process in apparel section, the products are shaped for various lines and sectors. In the last link, before the
final consumer, are the different channels of negotiation of the goods produced.

MUNDIAL 1. DIMENSÕES DO MERCADO MUNDIAL
GLOBAL OVERVIEW

International trade
Foreign trade is one of the great highlights of the textile sector, being possible to observe greater expression, especially
in the last two decades, with the new configuration of the world’s major players.
The chart below shows trade data and covers the textile and apparel segments from 1990 to 2021. In the last 10
years, that is, from 2012 to 2021, the sector as a whole showed a slight drop in average rates of 0.81% per year, when
analyzing in a disaggregated way, it was possible to verify that the textile segment moved negatively, within the same
period, at average rates of 2.01%, while the clothing segment showed an average retraction of 0.17% per year.
In the last year 2021, a reduction of approximately 3.3% in world trade in the sector was estimated compared to 2020.

When measured in values, in U.S. dollars, an increase of 10.9% was observed in the period 2020 to 2021.
Dimensions of the textile market, production and per capita consumption in Brazil
In 2021, it was estimated that Brazilian textile production was 11.3 kilograms per inhabitant, a growth of 24.6%,
compared to the previous year, according to IEMI criteria that add domestic filament consumption to annual yarn
production. This number represented the highest value verified within the available series.
In the last year, per capita consumption was 14.9 kilograms per inhabitant, an increase of 27.7%, compared to 2020.
Such a difference between production and consumption per capita indicates that part of domestic consumption was
supplied by imports.

The table below is the result of the use of the impact/demand matrix between the different sectors of the Brazilian economy.
Thus, it is possible to establish supply and demand interrelationships between the different activities of the economy, even
if they are not directly linked in the production chain. In the case of the present study, it refers to the demand of other sectors
of the Brazilian economy in relation to the textile sector. In the set of activities selected, trade is the main one, in view of the
number of destinations it serves, both retail and wholesale, at least in the three main links of the chain. Transport ends
up corresponding to vehicles, both light and heavy, which are used to transport textile products intensively. Financial
intermediation, finally, corresponds to service activities that require the use of textile materials in its structure.
