Vencendo a competição para desenvolver um novo Streetmekka em Viborg,

na Dinamarca, e indicado para o Mies van der Rohe Award, a proposta
vencedora da rma de arquitetura EFFEKT em colaboração com a GAME -
uma organização de esportes de rua sem ns lucrativos - permitiu a
reaproveitamento de uma antiga fábrica construir um novo híbrido entre uma 2
instalação esportiva e uma casa de cultura, que seja robusta o su ciente
para car aberta ao público 24 horas por dia, sem supervisão e onde os
usuários estejam encarregados e tenham iniciativa.

O edifício original originalmente serviu como uma fábrica de moinho de vento

e existe como um exemplo arquetípico de um dos muitos armazéns ou
edifícios de fábrica do nal dos anos 60 e 70. Esses edifícios são sobras de
um passatempo industrializado, onde em quase todas as cidades do mundo
ocidental estruturas idênticas e imponentes são vistas como marcadores
físicos de uma era industrializada. É quando esses edifícios cam vazios que
seu potencial latente é mostrado; é a escala magní ca e quase como
proporções de catedral mantidas dentro de um robusto, concreto ou aço.
Com a maioria destes edifícios tendo valor histórico, cultural ou arquitetônico
insigni cante, uma oportunidade se apresenta para dar um novo signi cado,
valor arquitetônico e histórico às estruturas de concreto e seus detalhes

O EFFEKT queria que a ocupação do prédio apoiasse uma missão para atrair a
juventude local e criar uma mudança social duradoura através de esportes de

rua e capacitação cultural. A estrutura programática é, portanto,
especi camente projetada para acomodar esta missão onde os espaços são
projetados para realizar alternativas individualizadas ou auto-organizadas
aos esportes e atividades culturais estabelecidas do clube. Estes incluem
novos espaços para julgamento, parkour, basquete, patinação, bouldering,

dança e também áreas de o cina personalizadas para DJ'ing e produção
musical, um estúdio de animação, laboratório de fabricante, espaços sociais,
zonas de hangout e estúdios de artistas.O objetivo de incluir tantas
atividades diferentes é promover a idéia de coexistência - a ideia de que ela
pode criar novas sinergias e novas relações sociais. Além disso, expõe os
visitantes a novos tipos de atividades que eles nunca teriam percebido que
existiam, incentivando o engajamento futuro.

A oeste do local há um armazém de tamanho idêntico, com uma única

entrada dividindo os dois edifícios, resultando em um desolado não-lugar
entre eles. Os espaços adjacentes ao redor do armazém são em grande parte
de concreto e inativos, isolando o prédio e criando um plano de terra pouco
convidativo. O objetivo nal era direcionar um público demográ co amplo
para o novo Streetmekka e fazer isso respondendo com um edifício aberto e
acolhedor, diminuindo o limite de envolvimento e engajamento.

Resolving this agenda becomes visible on the perimeter. It’s lofty exterior,
which has historically functioned to disengage a relationship of exterior and
interior, is broken down. With the prefab concrete panels removed, it is
replaced with a translucent polycarbonate skin that wraps the entire project. 2
Tempering light between the exterior and interior, the polycarbonate exhibits
a hazy outline of the thick concrete pillars and I-beams behind whilst
showcasing vibrant activities within. The east and west entry facades have
been completely removed and replaced by glazing, creating a grand and
controlled vista through the building and between the entry and exit points
of the site. The overall palette is light, simple, and open, showcasing an anti-
elitist, modern and robust form that encourages usage through its visibility.
This new façade facilitates a second use, in that local artists have been
curated so that their work can be displayed or projected onto it.

The programmatic organisation is based on a key concept that is centred on

the idea of transforming both the exterior vastness and the sizeable interior,
into a blended indoor and outdoor streetscape. Where the project opens up
the introverted skeleton through two new glass facades, an internal arcade
begins and ends. This arcade is located in the impressive, central production
oor that has mostly been maintained to allow for a variety of xed and
moveable spaces: parkour, bouldering, basketball, soccer, skating and a

lounge/hangout zone. Also within this space are customised workshop areas
for music production and DJ’ing, an animation studio, a fabrication lab and
various artist studios, and wood and metal workshops. These zones have
been laid out and arranged in relation to their speci c requirements, such as
spatial quality, daylight, materiality and temperature zones.

Utilising the gridded concrete structure of the building, the north and south
facades have been tted with two oors of new wooden and concrete
partitions that divide and enclose spaces to house a variety of other
activities. The second oor of spaces juts out to the centre of the production
space to engage and surveil the interior. The north side is designated for
skate-areas, opening up the larger section of landscape, and the south
conveniently holds all the administrative facilities in one strip. The ground
oor spaces – depending on their intended use – can be opened up to the
new exterior ground plane or remain open to it, blurring the perimeter to
engage the surrounding landscape.

The surrounding landscape then becomes the natural extension of the

indoor surface, with various street-sports and cultural functions placed in a
recreational string of greenery that connects the site to the downtown area
through a future pedestrian and bicycle path. As part of the rehabilitation, a 2
lot of the buildings original components were repurposed as furniture
elements as well as objects to equip the parkour and skating activities
outside.

EFFEKT’s design for a new Streetmekka repurposes and skins the dilapidated
archetypal windmill factory to engage the cathedral-like interior of the
space. Dispersing program around its perimeter and preserving the 2
production space for the creation of a novel internal streetscape, the building
surveys its own activities and o ers a new connection out towards the
landscape. The new performative polycarbonate skin, wraps the exterior
giving the appearance of a light and welcoming building, which showcases
the exciting activities within and the beautiful industrial details of the
buildings past. The preservation of the original structure and the reuse and
up cycling of materials made it possible to carry out the refurbishment at a
very low expense. This inexpensive warehouse refurbishment o ers the
community a new refuge, sports hub, and a cultural centre that encourages
lasting social change through street-sports and culture enabling. It is
architecture for a community; a clever re-use, qualitative design thinking and
simple detailing have created a building to empower a generation’s future.
