Fashion
Brief explanation of the theme: Streetwear and urban art complement each other in current
fashion, promoting social inclusion and individual expression. Streetwear absorbs visual
influences from urban art, bringing the artistic expression from the streets to fashion. This
partnership strengthens creativity and representativeness in contemporary fashion.

Streetwear, one of the most recent and prominent trends in current fashion, emerged
in the 1970s-80s and combines individuality, expression, and creativity in its designs.
Originating from the urban culture of the streets of Los Angeles and New York, this style
began when surfers, skateboarders, and hip-hop followers started adopting clothes that stood
out for being "oversized" (large), with strong colors and unique graphic prints. In this context,
artists have space to express their creativity by creating extremely authentic pieces.
Urban art and streetwear have an intrinsic relationship, feeding each other and
influencing contemporary culture. Urban art, present in murals, graffiti, and interventions in
cities, serves as a form of visual expression on the streets, transmitting messages and creating
a unique aesthetic environment. Streetwear, in turn, absorbs these visual influences and
transforms them into prints and designs that are incorporated into clothing and accessories,
allowing urban art to be taken beyond walls and seen as a form of individual expression and
identity in fashion, as well as elevating any conventional look.
Both art and fashion are built through the form of expression, this art model is
strongly seen in streetwear, since it also arose in the streets and with the intention of
liberating and seeking new forms of artistic expression coming from suburban residents.
Different from what it is today, this way of dressing initially was not so well received, a
prejudiced view, belittling this free attire that is so rooted and connected to street fashion.
Currently relevant brands such as Baw, Stussy, collaborations with artists like Kaws,
an artist highly recognized for his unique style and graffiti designs, toys, and prints with the
Uniqlo brand, show how the world of urban art and this artistic and expressive freedom has
creatively incorporated into the world of fashion and streetwear, strongly influenced by the
designs and unique graphic works.
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who began his career by graffitiing in
the suburbs of New York and soon gained visibility for his expressive and unique works,
which manifested in the world of fashion. Basquiat created and painted on T-shirts to help
him earn money, which ended up catching the attention of famous boutiques. Today brands
like Supreme, Reebok, Agnés B, Off-White are strongly influenced by his works, as shown in
the Harpers Bazaar article. Recently, the "About Love" advertising campaign by Tiffany &Co
showed the painting "Equals Pi", a painting by Basquiat made in the iconic blue of the brand,
starring Beyoncé and "Jay-Z" Carter, evoking the figure of Basquiat.
Streetwear and urban art form an intrinsic partnership that drives social inclusion in
contemporary fashion. By incorporating visual and expressive influences from the streets,
streetwear provides a platform for individual creativity and authenticity, allowing people of
different backgrounds and cultures to freely express themselves. This union between fashion
and urban art in art promotes representation and challenges established norms, creating a
space where individuality and expression are celebrated.
