Eu somente fotografo coisas com que me identifico, e eu nunca fiz algo que no quiz fazer. Eu no fao editoriais ou publicidade. No, minha liberdade algo que no deixo escapar com facilidade.

I photograph only something that has to do with me, and I never did anything that I did not want to do. I do not do editorial and I never do advertising. No, my freedom is something I do not give away easily.

nasceu em Biskovice, na Tchecoslovquia em 10 de janeiro de 1938. estudou engenharia aeronutica.

1961-1967: fotografou ciganos da Tchecoslovquia e fez fotografias de teatro enquanto ganhava a vida como engenheiro aeronutico. 1967: decide finalmente a se dedicar exclusivamente fotografia. 1968: fotografa a ocupao de Praga pelo Exrcito Sovitico. 1970: deixa a Tchecoslovquia. 1971: membro da agncia inglesa Magnum.

Born in Biskovice (Czechoslovakia), January 10, 1938. Studies aeronautical engineering.

1961-1967: photographs the gypsies of Czechoslovakia and makes theater photographs while earning a living as an aeronautical engineer. 1967: decides to devote himself exclusively to photography. 1968: reportage on the occupation of Prague by the Soviet army. 1970: leaves Czechoslovakia. 1971: member of Magnum. Lives in Paris and in Prague.

I have to shoot three cassettes of film a day, even when not 'photographing', in order to keep the eye in practice.

Em 1969, um ano aps as esteiras dos tanques russos rolarem em Praga, Josef Kouldelka visitou Londres com um grupo de teatro Tcheco. Em uma manh de domingo ele estava saindo de seu hotel, quando notou alguns membros de seu grupo de teatro folheando as pginas da revista Sunday Times. Para sua surpresa eles estavam olhando para fotografias por ele feitas, da invaso do exrcito Russo e dos espontneos protestos por ela causados.

In 1969, a year after Russian tanks rolled into Prague, Josef Koudelka visited London with a Czech theatre group. One Sunday morning he was walking out of his hotel near the Aldwych Theatre when he saw some members of the theatre group perusing a copy of the Sunday Times magazine. As he passed, he saw to his surprise that they were looking at his own extraordinary photographs of that Russian invasion and the spontaneous street protests it provoked.

The same photos have since become the definitive pictorial record of a pivotal event in 20th century history.

'They showed me the magazine where it said that these pictures had been taken by an unknown photographer from Prague and smuggled out of the country,' he says, shaking his head as if he still cannot believe it. 'I could not tell anyone that they were my photographs. It was a very strange feeling. From that moment, I was afraid to go back to Czechoslovakia because I knew that if they wanted to find out who the unknown photographer was, they could do it.

Antes de retornar Praga, Kouldelka comeou a se preparar para deixar novamente, mas desta vez, de uma vez por todas. Ele contatou a agncia de fotografia Magnum, que havia publicado seu trabalho na revista Sunday Times, atribuindo suas imagens a um certo PP (Prague Photographer) para evitar represlias contra ele e sua famlia. A agncia Magnum escreveu uma carta ao Ministro da Cultura Tcheco, oferecendo uma bolsa a Kouldelka para fotografar os ciganos pela Europa. Funcionou. E quando seu visto venceu, ele no retornou. De repente sem ptria, ele se tornou um tipo de cigano, sempre em mudana, abandonando a noo de terra natal.
Before he returned to Prague, Koudelka began making preparations to leave again, this time for good. He began by contacting the Magnum photographic agency, which had placed his work in the Sunday Times, attributing the images to PP (Prague Photographer) lest he and his family should suffer reprisals. Magnum subsequently wrote a letter to the Czech Ministry of Culture saying they had given him a grant to photograph Gypsies across Europe. It worked. In 1970, when his visa ran out, Koudelka did not return home. Suddenly stateless, he too became a kind of Gypsy, constantly on the move, forsaking the very notion of a homeland.

What matter most to me (...) is to take photographs; to continue taking them and not to repeat myself. To go further, to go as far as I can.
