RESUMO
ABSTRACT
The Brazilian fish farming stands out for its high productivity and
profitability, but the occurrence of disease outbreak has caused
many losses. In order to reduce these problems, the use of
probiotics is a timely tool to be a preventative management against
the use of antibiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that,
when administered in adequate amounts, colonize the intestinal
tract, regulate the microbiota, compete with pathogens and
stimulate the immune system. Over the years, various strategies
were used to modulate the composition of the intestinal microbiota
of fish, and, in order to achieve better growth rates, digestion,
immunity and disease resistance, probiotics have been studied.

However, the results obtained with the use of probiotics are quite
controversial, requiring the isolation and development of probiotic
species-specific. Thus, this review aimed to contribute to the
knowledge of using probiotics in fish farming, from the isolation
and selection of strains to the in vitro tests until large-scale
commercial use.
