A primeira vez que tive contato com a
produção do Terry Winters foi vendo as
gravuras. Eu fiz faculdade de Design e
o meu projeto final era todo baseado
em gravuras sobre metal. O que mais

me impressionou foi que nas gravuras ele
não trabalha com cor, é tudo em preto
e branco. E, mesmo assim, conseguia
e o natural não têm
criar um espaço estruturado, dentro do
plano tem espaço dentro, o que de certa
forma também aparece nas pinturas. As
diferenciação, são partes gravuras tinham muita informação, muita
linha, muito acúmulo e, apesar disso, você
conseguia ter a noção de espaço e de
que se alternam de entrar... Isso me pegou, porque é algo
muito difícil de se fazer só com uma cor.
Precisa ter um entendimento de variação
um mesmo contínuo de linha, de perspectiva, de vários outros
elementos... Depois, dando aula, voltei
de entendimento
a olhar muito para o trabalho dele, pois
é um trabalho que se presta ao ensino.

você aprende, dá para identificar o que
ele está fazendo, é direto, tanto na pintura
quanto na gravura e no desenho, se presta
muito a ensinar para as outras pessoas
sobre composição, linha, espaço negativo,
todo esse vocabulário visual.
Eu não sou pintora, meu trabalho é
bastante heterogêneo, sou dessa geração
da instalação, da arte conceitual, da crítica
institucional, todo esse outro campo. No
entanto, sempre utilizei como base do meu
trabalho o desenho. E colagem também
eu faço muito, como algo que perpassa
o meu processo na hora de fazer outras
coisas. Aconteceu um pouco dessa maneira
na série de colagens da qual algumas
estão agora na exposição do Olhão. Eu
estava produzindo uma instalação, mas já

My first contact with Terry Winters’ work
was when I saw his prints. I studied Design
at university and my thesis project was
based entirely on intaglio printing. What
most impressed me was that he doesn’t
work with color in his prints; everything is
black and white. And even so, he is able to
create a structured space; there is interior
space inside the plane, which also appears
in his paintings to a degree. His prints had
abundant information, lots of lines, lots of
accumulation, and despite this, you were
able to have an idea of the space and to
enter… This got me, because it’s very hard
to do with just one color. An understanding
is needed of line variation, of perspective,
of various other elements. Then, when
I was teaching, I went back to looking
at his work considerably, because it is a
work that lends itself to teaching. Because
the process can be seen, you learn from
looking. You can identify what he is doing.
It is direct, in his painting as well as in his
prints and drawings. It is very conducive
to teaching others about composition,
lines, negative space, this entire visual
vocabulary.
I’m not a painter. My work is quite
heterogeneous. I’m from the installation
generation, the generation of conceptual
art, of institutional critiques, this entirely
different field. However, I’ve always used
drawing as the basis of my work. And I
also do quite a bit of collage, as something
pervasive to my process when doing other
things. The series of collages from which
some of the pieces on exhibit now at Olhão
were selected happened a bit in this way.
I was producing an installation, but already
creating all of this material: the imaginary
that I wanted to show, which images,
que eu queria trazer, quais as imagens,
qual a combinação de cor, como essas
coisas se estruturam. E, ao mesmo tempo,
continuando a olhar bastante para o
trabalho do Terry.
É interessante que em toda essa
perspectiva da biologia, da imagem
científica no trabalho dele, o artificial e o
natural não têm diferenciação, são partes
que se alternam de um mesmo contínuo
de entendimento do mundo. Enquanto
nós estamos aqui falando disso, estou
olhando para o padrão dessas cadeiras,
para a estrutura de metal no teto – que
são absolutamente desenhos do Terry
Winters. Então tudo isso tem a ver também
com como o próprio ser humano constrói
coisas, com o tipo de padronização,
de formulação de estruturas etc., uma
perspectiva do trabalho dele que eu
considero extremamente importante. É
raro ver alguém tão esclarecido sobre essa
não diferenciação entre natureza, homem,
cultura, artificial. No entanto, ele avança
ainda mais quando traz aquelas imagens
de radiografias, de exames clínicos dele
mesmo, de visualização de dados.
Na relação entre o meu trabalho e o do
Terry Winters, principalmente no caso
desses que ele chama de Notebooks, acho
curioso que estou pensando sobre ideias
de propagação de informação, e de uma
maneira concentrada não na visualização,
mas na infraestrutura que possibilita que a
informação viaje. Não apenas a imagem
em si, mas como ela chega nas pessoas,
os instrumentos pelos quais essa imagem
passa. A mediação do mundo técnico
altera não só a forma como a gente vê as
coisas, mas produz também uma maneira
própria de ver. Nós tendemos a esquecer
que os museus, as instituições, os lugares
onde se mostra os trabalhos também são
máquinas de visualização, também são
grandes estruturas de formalização da
cultura visual.
