- THE CONSTRUCTION
OF THE WOODEN
TRUNK HULL
Ana Júlia Miranda Castro

2nd day: The next day, they left again to put the tree’s
trunk into the right position, and then cut it in the right
length, according to the bũgu’s size. After that, they cut the
upper side of the trunk, aligning to the length, then they
marked the upper side that would be the mouth of the
bũgu. Thus, the second day of work was concluded.

- THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE WOODEN TRUNK HULL 67
3rd day: Four gentlemen called Dário Afonso, Rui, Juarez
and José gather around to agree on how they would carve
that bũgu, and so they verified the thickness of that big
tree through one end to the other.
4th day: On the fourth day, the men kept building the
bũgu. They carved an inner part using a tool called tasira
(adze).
5th day: On the fifth day, they finished carving the inner
part of the bũgu. Then, the men split up into two groups:
one of the group worked with the ndyi (axe) to dig and
carve the hardest, the other group dab inside the bũgu
using the itá-iupanasara and tasira (chisel and adze).
6th day: On the sixth day, after closing the holes they
made in the bũgu, the men put it into the heat of the fire to
warm the wood. It was early friday, and they called the
students to see the bũgu. When they finished heating the
bũgu, they scraped in and outside of it, so that they
cleaned up the dirt.
7th and 8th day: On the seventh and eighth day, the men
made the benches of the bũgu and the stern with a wide
board. The used wood to the stern was made by the aiúa
(bay laurel), and wood of the four benches was from
ytayua (itauba tree).
9th day: On the ninth day, the men arrived at the place of
the bũgu and cut the wood to put under it and drag it to
the water.
10th and 11th day: On the tenth and eleventh day, the
men put the wood under the bũgu to push it into the
river’s direction.

THE ORGIN OF THE
WOODEN HOOK

They arrived at the ship with canoes made of trunk trees, long
boats, and all made with only one piece, and amazingly
sculpted, in which arrived forty or forty-five men, and others
in small canoes. They paddled with a shovel apuguitá, a
rowing, that works wonderfully.
