If the topography of the terrain is flat, then the quarries are developed in the open
pit by right steps, and it is good practice to plan the widest possible fronts. The
flanks of these quarries are characterized by vertical or subvertical slopes. Machine
access may be made via ramps if the quarry is not confined to a small area or by a
crane if this occurs.
elevador. The access of workers should preferably be done by elevator.
Geomorfologia do terreno
Características geológicas. Orientação da pedreira já está definida

Geological characteristics.
This type of exploitation takes place in chambers and pillars having as great inconvenience
the quantity of material of high economic value that has to be left as pillars of support of the
ceilings. After entering a gallery and opening a large chamber, the development will be done in
the same way as in the open pit, in the well exploitation.
- Disassemble often made the explosive, with the use of gunpowder.
- If the marble bollards have any quality, extraction will be
done using the diamond wire.
- The evolution of this level begins with the creation of a "box" of lowering of floor, using
the drilling and cut with diamond wire and whose height will be around 5 or 6 m.

- Are made 4 vertical holes called Masters Wells defining a trapezoid in plan. The holes have
a diameter of 220 mm and are made with a drill jumbo rotopercussive and a bit of buttons.
- Posteriormente são realizados dois furos
Then the vertical holes are made with the light pneumatic
hammer and a bevel bit of diameter between 3 and 4 cm.
These are executed until they intersect the diagonal holes
defining slices.
The higher the fracturing density, the greater the width of
the Slices.

Golpe Vertical de Topo / Top Vertical Cutting
In order to execute the top cuts, in the masters wells, directional posts provided
of pulleys of 18 cm diameter, installed in its lower parts. Out of the wells are mounted steering
pulleys the diamond wire for the drive pulley of the machine.
Due to the small size of the bottom pulleys of the master wells, the driving pulley of the machine
which is usually 80 cm in diameter is replaced by a smaller diameter (40 cm).
Golpe Diagonal / Diagonal Cut

In order to carry out the cuttings of the slices it is also necessary to use the “rope technique". In
this case, the ends of the rope are inserted into the vertical holes and are "fished" by the diagonal
holes. Here, the diamond wire is attached to the ends of the rope which is pulled back, now in
the reverse direction, causing the diamond wire to descend through the diagonal cut until it is
positioned at the desired location for cutting the slice. After the tips are out of the vertical holes
are joined and prepared all the equipment for cutting.
Cortes Verticias Laterais / Vertical Side Cuts
O procedimento de passagem do fio
diamantado é repetido entre o poço mestre e o
furo diagonal opostos procedendo-se agora à
realização dos cortes verticais laterais.
Finally, the lower wedge is dismantled in the same way as the upper wedge. The end result is
to obtain a "box" from which channels are developed.
Another alternative to lowering the level is using a Bank Saw Machine, which can be equipped
with diamond strap or tungsten carbide strap. With this equipment the method is completely
different being able to reduce by half the time consumed to lower the floor. Although it is an
equipment with a very large range of saws lengths, up to 5 m in length, the most common is in
the order of 3.5 m.
In the particular case of the use of a Bank Saw Machine with a length of 3.5 m, the lowering of
the level will have to be carried out in two stages as bench heights of around 5.0 m are desired
and the maximum depth of cut will be 3.0 m.
1º Abixamento

efectuado por duas
vezes.
The spacing between the two horizontal holes and between the master wells (in the case of
trapezoidal section channels) defines the length of the slices. The width of the slices defined by
the vertical drilling of the light pneumatic hammers, being strongly conditioned with the
fracturing existing in the mass, that is, the larger the number of fractures, the larger the slice
width should be so that the best possible yield is obtained.
Largura Média
(1, 5 m – 2,5 m)
After the open channel it is possible to progress the exploitation in the longitudinal direction
through the advancement bench. This is the phase of the exploitation that is more productive,
faster and requires fewer workers.

4m e 8m x 8m;
2 - Consolidation of the gallery; for this are left pillars whose dimensions vary between 4m x
4m and 8m x 8m;
cm e 30 cm às dimensões dos pilares à medida que se vai descendo de piso;
3 - Downward progression as is done in the open pit quarries increasing between 25 cm and 30
cm to the dimensions of the pillars as it descends from the floor;

Task performed by filling a gallery hydraulic mattress that is placed in the horizontal cut of
base, under block 2. This promotes the breaking of the rock by traction in the back of both
blocks.
7
For the removal of block 1 a small nailing is made in which a steel cable is placed.
Subsequently, with the track excavator the cable is pulled and the block is removed like a
drawer if due to the presence of the steel rollers at its base. The block 2 is then removed using
the same technique.
8
The cut is made with diamond wire that is leaned against the back of the blocks with the aid of
a steel bar. Two directional pulleys mounted in a structure of suitable thickness to fit the cuts
made by de gallery saw machine, direct the diamond wire to the respective machine
previously positioned in a plane perpendicular to the cut.
9
Finally block 3 and then block 4 are removed using the same technique as used for the above.
After the removal of all blocks, the advance operation in gallery is finished, leaving the area free
for further advancement.

The ramps are used essentially for access to the work on the front, and can not have
slopes higher than 22% (11º). The tracks are paths that communicate between the
different areas within the quarry, and should not have slopes higher than 8%.
5. Dimensionamento de Escombreiras / 5. Sizing Heaps
As can easily be inferred, there are numerous constraints that interfere with the
deposition and construction of a heap, hence it becomes particularly difficult to indicate
standard parameters that can be followed for the preparation of such deposits.
… no entanto, avançam-se alguns valores meramente indicativos:
- altura do banco – 15 m máximo;
- largura da berma – 5 m mínimo;
- inclinação do talude até ao interior das bermas – 3% - 5%;
- inclinações finais – 3% - 5%;
- superfícies de estabilização;
cobertura da escombreira com solo fértil);
- Distance to the new position - 500 m (this is a short distance, with regular floor path);
- Equipment involved:
1 loader with bucket of 5 m3;
2 dumpers A 25 (25 t capacity);
- Considering that each bucket takes 5 m3, converting in tons will give approximately 13.5 t,
so theoretically in two buckets would fill a dumper (situation unlikely, as some buckets will
carry a single stone, not filling the bucket) . So consider 6 min for loading a dumper.
- 100 m x 45 m x 16 m = 72 000 m3 x 2,7 = 194 400 t
- Route + stopped time (while charging) of a dumper = 21 min, which makes:
- 3 cycles em 63 min.
- 3 cycles x 8 h (work / day) = 24 cycles /day
- 24 cycles x 2 dumpers = 48 cycles / day
- 48 cyclos x 25 t = 1200 t / day
- 194 499 t : 1200 t = 162 days
- 162 days : 22 working days / month = 7,36 months
Removal of the heap and removal to another location will take between 7 and 8 months.
Paisagistica).
The PARP is a technical document which lists the environmental measures to be taken during
the exploitation and closure of the exploited areas. This should include a deactivation plan, the
identification of the wastes / by-products to be used for topographical regularization, a plan of
vegetation and sowing, monitoring, a schedule of operations duly articulated with the Mining
Plan, specifications, measurements, budget and calculation of bail.
According to Article 49, Decree Law 340/2007, the operator must close the quarry and proceed
with the recovery of the quarry area according to the approved PARP, whenever possible, as the
exploitations fronts are progressing , when the exploitation is completed and when it leaves the
extractiv unit or when the license expires.
