When she became prime minister in 1979, the country
was under the strong influence of labor unions, which, in
her opinion, made the economy unfeasible, crippling the
competitiveness of companies. Because of this and her
toughness in negotiating with workers, Thatcher's most
important arm wrestle was with the British miners, who
went on strike for a year, between 1984 and 1985, in
protest ………………………………….. the closure of mines
considered inefficient. They ended up going back to work
without winning a single concession. According to
Thatcher "if it’s not profitable, it has to be closed".
minas consideradas ineficientes. Acabaram voltando ao
trabalho sem conseguir nada. Segundo Thatcher “se não dá
lucro, precisa fechar”.

THE IRA – In relation to the Irish Republican Army, the
IRA, Margaret Thatcher's action was also harsh. She
was not moved by a 66-day ……………………………… strike
carried out by IRA prisoners, which caused the death
of 10 people. As a result of this indifference, a bomb
went off at the Brighton Hotel where she was staying,
in 1984. Her room was partially destroyed, but
Margaret was unharmed.
atentado à bomba, em 1984, no Brighton Hotel, onde
ela se hospedava. Seu quarto ficou parcialmente
danificado, mas Margaret saiu ilesa.
