Apocalyptic and anti-apocalyptic perspectives for inhabiting the present: resisting, thinking,
and experiencing together the end of the world
We propose to gather papers dedicated to investigating how the senses and meanings of the
end of times and the end of the world have been altered due to human-produced catastrophes –
those that marked the Second World War, such as extermination camps and atomic bombs, as
well as preceding ones that memory policies have come to name, such as colonialism and
slavery. This also includes the emergence of the Anthropocene (its disasters and pandemics),
as well as the articulation of certain frameworks for understanding and intervening in the world,
notably present in the realms of far-right ideology and neoliberal rationality. The aim is to
understand the effects of such alterations on our experiences of time, History, Politics, the very
possibilities of narration, and the definition of the Human. How do we inhabit a present that
faces an 'apocalypse without a Kingdom,' as Günther Anders expressed it? What are the
epistemological, ethical, political, emotional, and cultural implications of a world's end that
some desire, others seek to hasten, while others work to postpone? What horizons close and
open before us? Perspectives that take into account decolonial, feminist, post-colonial, queer,
and critical race theories are especially welcome.
