Eletrobras pursues the vision of becoming the largest global clean energy corporation by
2020. Thus, investments in renewable sources of power generation play a dual role on the path
towards a sustainable future.
In addition to laying down the foundations for the transition towards an environmentally
responsible economy in Brazil, new investments in clean generation create the backbone for
protecting the very ecosystems that will host new projects. The choice of strategic locations such as
the Amazon region provides an alternative to extractivism while guaranteeing unparalleled
resources for biodiversity research and conservation.
For this reason, we have the pleasure of sponsoring the current work of illustrator Dulce
Nascimento. Direct apprentice of Maria Werneck de Castro, she is one of the world leading
specialists in the area of watercolor plants. This art is both beautiful and essencial to science, as it
ensures such accurate and detailed botanical records that it allows rare or endangered plants to be
studied even without the specimen at hand.
We hope that the work of the artist, assembled in this book, will not only be relevant to the
scientific community but will also offer to the general public the pleasure of enjoying the beauty of
the native flora. Enhancing the knowledge on Brazil’s natural resources is an important part of the
vision upheld by Eletrobras for the country.

During the past three hundred years a number of scientists and naturalists have explored the
Amazon rainforest and have described its beauty, exuberance and mystery. Among these were
Alexander von Humboldt, Alfred Russel Wallace, Richard Evans Schultes and Margaret Mee.
Though notes and collected specimens form the basis of most expedition documentation, artwork is
also important. All of these noted naturalists employed drawings to one degree or another, but only
Margaret Mee used them as a primary means of communicating information about the regions she
visited. It is through Margaret’s paintings that we can appreciate the diversity of plant life present in
Amazonia, and understand what will be lost if the forests are destroyed. Margaret Mee died in
1988. However, through the support of the Margaret Mee Foundation, other naturalist/artists have
been able to follow in her footsteps. One such artist is Dulce Nascimento.
I met Dulce in Evora, Portugal, where she encouraged me to take her watercolor class in
Brazil while traveling on the Amazon River and some of its tributaries. This I did, and it introduced
me to the wonders of Amazonia. Though formally trained as a scientific illustrator, I still had much
to learn about watercolor technique, and Dulce was an excellent teacher – structured, patient and
kind. My watercolor paintings definitely improved after time spent as one of Dulce’s students!
Perhaps more important than learning how to paint rainforest plants is continuing Margaret
Mee’s legacy, specifically, helping people to appreciate the need to protect and conserve the
Brazilian Amazon. This was one of Dulce’s gifts to me as well. It is because of Dulce that I now
have firsthand information about the ecology of the Brazilian rainforest, and can share this
material with my own students.
And now some of Dulce’s paintings have been collected in Brazilian Plants – The Botanical
Illustration of Dulce Nascimento. These paintings are truly inspirational. They instill in the viewer
a respect for the plants and their environment, and encourage us to insure that they will remain for
future generations to appreciate.

CAPÍTULO I
BRAZILIAN PLANTS
razil is one of the most forest-rich countries on the planet, falling only behind Russia. We know
that these forests are singularly capable of conserving soil, preserving water, and safeguarding
the climate, in addition to being fundamental repositories of biodiversity.
Is it possible to imagine how life on this planet would be without forests, or actually how nature
and life would be if we were to lose all native forests? The Environmental program of the UN has
disclosed that yearly the world looses an average of 6 million hectares of primary forests by
deforestation. This is without considering other forms of threats against forests, such as fire or genetic
failure due to the loss of pollinating species and the dispersers of seeds.

FIRST STEPS
t was at her internship at Feema where Dulce met Maria Werneck de Castro, a volunteer
I illustrator at the institution and a veteran of the profession. At that time botanical illustration
was an activity limited to research. Considered by botanists as an icon of Brazilian scientific
botanical illustrations, the boards of Maria Werneck de Castro were created hand and hand with
researchers, to ensure the depiction of the most accurate plant colors and form.
Achieving the color tone of a plant is not an easy task. First, one needs to learn to observe all
the details, visualize the colors and experiment with watercolor pigment mixtures, master the brush
strokes, successfully transport the colors to the paper, along with the forms that represent what the
illustrator sees.
É um trabalho que exige também precisão,
firmeza com os pincéis e experiência. Estar
pintar as plantas do gênero Dorstenia, conhecida
como caiapiá, da família das moráceas. Muitas

It is a job that also demands precision,
experience, and consistency with the brushes.
Being accompanied by a botanist during the
illustration process was fundamental for Maria
Werneck de Castro, who had the tutelage of
botanist Jorge Pedro Carauta, of the National
Museum, in order to draw and paint the plants of
the genus Dorstenia, known as cayapia, a genus
from the Moraceae family. Many known species
were described by him, and some are included on
the rare species list.
