A principal função
Existem
três tipos diferentes de conjunções, vamos começar pelas menores.
As conjunções coordenativas são conjunções pequenas e simples. Mas que têm um importante
papel no texto e consequentemente na interpretação. São elas:
And (e), but (mas), nor (nem), yet (no entanto), or (ou), for (para), so (então)
He already bought two dogs this month and now he wants a cat.
She had a bad headache yesterday. She still went to the meeting.
Ela teve uma dor de cabeça ontem. Ela ainda foi para a reunião.
She had a bad headache yesterday, but she still went to the meeting.

Either...or Ou...ou
Neither...nor Nem...ou
Not...but Não...mas
* Quando expressões com uma palavra negativa como o Not only...but also e outras similares

VERBOS FRASAIS
Um verbo frasal é um verbo seguido de uma palavra tal como in, on, out, up, away,
off, down e outras.
Observe
como isso acontece nos exemplos abaixo:
John and Mary broke up. He broke off their engagement yesterday. She broke down when
he told her.
João e Maria se separaram. Ele acabou o noivado deles ontem. Ela ficou arrasada quando
ele terminou o relacionamento com ela.

VERBOS AUXILIARES
seguida.

algo. Esse é o uso enfático.
Are you all right? You do look a bit pale. Do please sit down.
Did you visit your family last month? - Yes, I did. But she didn’t.
Você visitou sua família no mês passado? – sim, visitei. Mas ela não.

A negativa é feita por se colocar o auxiliar DID seguido da palavra NOT posicionado antes do
verbo. Geralmente ele aparece contraído.
A frase acima é mais enfática do que dizer I called you last night ( Eu liguei para você ontem
a noite).

O verbo Have é usado como
que é o tempo verbal Present Perfect (have + verbo principal no Particípio).

VERBOS MODAIS

That must be my neighbor.
diferença é que o must sugere que o narrador é quem decidiu que algo é necessário, enquanto
que o have to sugere que alguém impôs a decisão.
Must = ter de, dever, precisar, ser necessário = have to = ter que

Ao se referir a um tempo verbal no Futuro, ao invés do must se usa os auxiliares will have (terá

Em frases negativas o must e o have to não são equivalentes. O must (must + not = musn’t)
continua expressando uma obrigação, enquanto que o have to (do + not = don’t have to)

O verbo to need (precisar, necessitar) é um verbo comum.
Observe a
diferença nos exemplos abaixo:
I didn't need to prepare all that food. They phoned to say they wouldn't be coming.
Eu não precisei preparar toda aquela comida. Eles telefonaram para dizer que não viriam.
I needn’t have prepared all that food. They phoned to say they wouldn’t be coming.
cheguei a preparar a comida. Veja agora o seu uso na interrogativa:
O verbo modal should tem significado semelhante ao semi-modal ought to. Nenhum outro
modal é seguido do to, apenas o ought to.
O should é bem mais

O will é usado em todas as pessoas
pessoas I e We.

acontecer.
No
texto. Esta é a opção correta.
O Would é muito conhecido junto ao like para fazer uma pergunta educadamente. Ex: Would
you like a cup of coffee?
Errada.

TEXTO 1
Guarda Portuário - Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (CODESP-SP) – FGV
New York was once the tugboat capital of the world, with more than eight hundred boats
3 crisscrossing its harbor in the nineteen - thirties. The McAllisters, the Crowleys and the Danns,
among
5 others, were part of the so-called Irish Navy, with its patchy fleets of steamboats, diesel tugs
and coal barges. The boats were manned by brothers, uncles, cousins, their blood ties a bond
against the
9 petty thieves and extortionists of the waterfront.
10 They docked ships, towed barges, salvaged freighters, and generally went where other
vessels couldn’t go.
About eight hundred million tons of cargo are still moved by tugboats in the United
States
15 every year, but in recent decades the traffic has gradually shifted. Houston now takes in
more cargo than New York and New Jersey combined.

amigos achegados.

TEXTO 2
Oficial de Chancelaria (OFCHAN) – MRE – FGV
What language should one use when speaking to diplomats, or what language should diplomats
use? Or, to be more precise, what language/languages should a (young) diplomat try to learn to
be more successful in his profession?
The term "language in diplomacy" obviously can be interpreted in several ways. First, as tongue
("mother" tongue or an acquired one), the speech "used by one nation, tribe, or other similar
large group of people"; in this sense we can say, for example, that French used to be the
predominant diplomatic language in the first half of the 20th century. Second, as a special way of
expressing the subtle needs of the diplomatic profession; in this way it can be said, for example,
that the delegate of such-and-such a country spoke of the given subject in totally non-diplomatic
language. Also, the term can refer to the particular form, style, manner or tone of expression;
such as the minister formulated his conditions in unusually strong language. It may mean as well
the verbal or non-verbal expression of thoughts or feelings: sending the gunships is a language
that everybody understands.
All of these meanings - and probably several others - can be utilised in both oral and written
practice. In any of these senses, the use of language in diplomacy is of major importance, since
language is not a simple tool, vehicle for transmission of thoughts, or instrument of
communication, but very often the very essence of the diplomatic vocation, and that has been so
from the early beginnings of our profession. That is why from early times the first envoys of the
Egyptian pharaohs, Roman legates, mediaeval Dubrovnik consuls, etc., had to be educated and
trained people, well-spoken and polyglots.

Aula 03
Let us first look into different aspects of diplomatic language in its basic meaning - that of a
tongue. Obviously, the first problem to solve is finding a common tongue. Diplomats only
exceptionally find themselves in the situation to be able to communicate in one language,
common to all participants. This may be done between, for example, Germans and Austrians, or
Portuguese and Brazilians, or representatives of different Arab countries, or British and
Americans, etc. Not only are such occasions rare, but very often there is a serious difference
between the same language used in one country and another.
There are several ways to overcome the problem of communication between people who speak
different mother tongues. None of these ways is ideal. One solution, obviously, is that one of the
interlocutors speaks the language of the other. Problems may arise: the knowledge of the
language may not be adequate, one side is making a concession and the other has an immediate
and significant advantage, there are possible political implications, it may be difficult to apply in
multilateral diplomacy, etc. A second possibility is that both sides use a third, neutral, language.
A potential problem may be that neither side possesses full linguistic knowledge and control,
leading to possible bad misunderstandings. Nevertheless, this method is frequently applied in
international practice because of its political advantages. A third formula, using interpreters, is
also very widely used, particularly in multilateral diplomacy or for negotiations at a very high
political level - not only for reasons of equity, but because politicians and statesmen often do not
speak foreign languages. This method also has disadvantages: it is time consuming, costly, and
sometimes inadequate or straightforwardly incorrect. [...] Finally, there is the possibility of using
one international synthetic, artificial language, such as Esperanto; this solution would have many
advantages, but unfortunately is not likely to be implemented soon, mostly because of the
opposition of factors that dominate in the international political - and therefore also cultural and
linguistic - scene.
So, which language is the diplomatic one? The answer is not simple at all [...].
Words are bricks from which sentences are made. Each sentence should be a wound-up thought.
If one wants to be clear, and particularly when using a language which he does not master
perfectly, it is better to use short, simple sentences. On the contrary, if one wishes to camouflage
his thoughts or even not say anything specific, it can be well achieved by using a more
complicated style, complex sentences, digressions, interrupting one's own flow of thought and
introducing new topics. One may leave the impression of being a little confused, but the basic
purpose of withholding the real answer can be accomplished.

Second, as a special way of expressing the subtle needs of the diplomatic profession; in this way
it can be said, for example, that the delegate of such-and-such a country spoke of the given
subject in totally non-diplomatic language.
Segundo, como uma forma especial de expressar as necessidades sutis da profissão diplomática;
Also, the term can refer to the particular form, style, manner or tone of expression; such as the
minister formulated his conditions in unusually strong language. It may mean as well the verbal or
non-verbal expression of thoughts or feelings: sending the gunships is a language that
everybody understands.

That is why from early times the first envoys of the
Egyptian pharaohs, Roman legates, mediaeval Dubrovnik consuls, etc., had to be educated and
trained people, well-spoken and polyglots.
eloquentes e poliglotas.
Let us first look into different aspects of diplomatic language in its basic meaning - that of a
tongue. Obviously, the first problem to solve is finding a common tongue. Diplomats only
exceptionally find themselves in the situation to be able to communicate in one language,
common to all participants.
This may be done between, for example, Germans and Austrians, or Portuguese and Brazilians,
or representatives of different Arab countries, or British and Americans, etc. Not only are such
occasions rare, but very often there is a serious difference between the same language used in
one country and another.

There are several ways to overcome the problem of communication between people who speak
different mother tongues. None of these ways is ideal. One solution, obviously, is that one of the
interlocutors speaks the language of the other.
Nenhuma dessas formas é a ideal.
Problems may arise: the knowledge of the language may not be adequate, one side is making a
concession and the other has an immediate and significant advantage, there are possible political
implications, it may be difficult to apply in multilateral diplomacy, etc.
A second possibility is that both sides use a third, neutral, language. A potential problem may be
that neither side possesses full linguistic knowledge and control, leading to possible bad
misunderstandings. Nevertheless, this method is frequently applied in international practice
because of its political advantages.
controle total, levando a possíveis mal-entendidos ruins.
A third formula, using interpreters, is also very widely used, particularly in multilateral diplomacy
or for negotiations at a very high political level - not only for reasons of equity, but because
politicians and statesmen often do not speak foreign languages. This method also has
disadvantages: it is time consuming, costly, and sometimes inadequate or straightforwardly
incorrect. [...]

Finally, there is the possibility of using one international synthetic, artificial language, such as
Esperanto; this solution would have many advantages, but unfortunately is not likely to be
implemented soon, mostly because of the opposition of factors that dominate in the
international political - and therefore also cultural and linguistic - scene. So, which language is
the diplomatic one? The answer is not simple at all [...].
Words are bricks from which sentences are made. Each sentence should be a wound-up thought.
If one wants to be clear, and particularly when using a language which he does not master
perfectly, it is better to use short, simple sentences.
On the contrary, if one wishes to camouflage his thoughts or even not say anything specific, it
can be well achieved by using a more complicated style, complex sentences, digressions,
interrupting one's own flow of thought and introducing new topics. One may leave the
impression of being a little confused, but the basic purpose of withholding the real answer can
be accomplished.
(Adapted from http://www.diplomacy.edu/books/language_and_diplomacy/texts/pdf/nick.PDF)

English language teaching and the challenges for citizenship and identity in the current century
The teaching of a foreign language in schools in Brazil has been subject to changes in the last
decades, following changes in the society as a whole. From the point of view of legislation, a
foreign language must be taught at high school level (5th to 9th grades) and at secondary school
(Ensino Médio), with the possibility of adding another language to this latter level. The choices
must take into account the community the school belongs to and the conditions for language
teaching. In practice, English is the language chosen by the majority of the schools. This option
is, of course, linked to the “value” it is given by the whole society. As we are about to start a new

• Um verbo frasal é um verbo seguido de uma palavra tal como in, on, out, up, away, off,
down e outras.
• Os verbos auxiliares mais comuns são be (ser, estar), have (ter) e do (fazer).
• O Does é para a terceira pessoa do singular: (he) ele, (she) ela, (it) neutro. O Do é usado
para todas as outras pessoas, eu (I), você(s) (you), nós (we) , eles/elas (they).
afirmativas.
• Memorize: Should = Ought to = deve, deveria
• Para expressar hábitos passados, o auxiliar Would é sinônimo do Used to:

What language should one use when speaking to diplomats, or what language should diplomats
use? Or, to be more precise, what language/languages should a (young) diplomat try to learn to
be more successful in his profession?
==7524e==
Second, as a special way of
expressing the subtle needs of the diplomatic profession; in this way it can be said, for example,
that the delegate of such-and-such a country spoke of the given subject in totally non-diplomatic
language. Also, the term can refer to the particular form, style, manner or tone of expression;
such as the minister formulated his conditions in unusually strong language.

Aula 03
(adapted from http://www.diplomacy.edu/books/language_and_)
11 In the second paragraph of Text III the author refers to different meanings the term
“language” can carry. When he argues that “sending the gunships is a language that everybody
understands”, he means that:

(A) hence;
(B) though;

where the regulator has learned to look.
The two extreme policies of keeping everything, or alternatively keeping nothing, are in

20 organisations are recognising that the potential damage from rogue (or uninformed)
employees far outweighs reliance on principle alone.

This bill prohibits an agent or contractor of the Department of Homeland Security, the
Department of Justice, or the Department of Health and Human Services from removing a child
who is under the age of 18 and has no permanent immigration status from his or her parent or
legal guardian at or near the port of entry or within 100 miles of the U.S. border unless:
• an authorized state court determines that it is in the child's best interests to be removed;
• a state or county child welfare official with expertise in child trauma and development
determines that it is in the child's best interests to be removed because of abuse or neglect; or
• the Chief Patrol Agent or the Area Port Director authorizes separation based on a documented
finding that the child is a trafficking victim or is at significant risk of becoming a victim, a strong
likelihood exists that the adult is not the parent or legal guardian, or the child is in danger of
abuse or neglect.
An agency may not remove a child from a parent or legal guardian solely for the policy goals of
deterring migration to the United States or of promoting immigration law compliance.
The bill sets forth presumptions: (1) in favor of family and sibling unity and parental rights, and (2)
that detention is not in the best interests of families and children.
The Government Accountability Office shall conduct a study of the prosecution of asylum
seekers.

English language teaching and the challenges for citizenship and identity in the current century
The teaching of a foreign language in schools in Brazil has been subject to changes in the
last decades, following changes in the society as a whole.
As we are about to start a new
millenium, communication among different peoples of the world is facilitated by global networks
such as CNN and the Internet. These channels, using mainly English to convey news to the world,
reinforce the status of this language as a lingua franca. This status, however, faces resistance (see
Pennycook, 1991 and Canagarajah, 1999). The teaching of foreign languages, from the
government standpoint, however, has remained untouched by such considerations.
