Abstract: In order to be abreast of the various social and cultural transformations in the
contemporary scenario, the school has felt the need to address issues considered
controversial. Within this scenario, literature has been regarded as an important
instrument to meet this demand. This work aims precisely at presenting a teaching
practice in which the work “Sapato de Salto” by Lygia Bojunga (cataloged as children’s
literature and made available by the PNLD literary program) was used to address 11
topics still considered controversial and/or taboo. Namely: (1) child sexual abuse; (2)
exploration of child labor; (3) uncovered sexuality and homo-affectivity; (4) suicide; (5)
prostitution; (6) mental health; (7) machoism; (8) female empowerment; (9) emotional
dependence; (10) pregnancy at adolescence; (11) conservative and liberal views of the
world. The work was organized through an event entitled “Talk Sessions on the Sapato
de Salto book” created by a teacher at the Federal Education Network on the even3
platform. After assembling a leaflet with scientific research on the topics, and after a
brief analysis of the work focusing on each topic, the 120 students from three first-year
classes in the Secondary Education invited the community to enroll in the event and
engage in discussions on the topics. During the activity, the students emphasized the
importance of spaces to discuss these topics and proposed the creation of new projects
and activities related to the topics. Generally speaking, it could be observed that actions
such as these meet the objectives of the BNCC and other official documents, since they
not only encourage youth leadership but are also an important step in the training of the
student as an effective reader and citizen. Keywords: Children’s and Youth Literature;
Youth Leadership; Controversial topics.
One of these works is "Sapato de Salto" by Lygia Bojunga. In general, "Sapato de Salto"
portrays part of the life of two pre-adolescents who go through and/or come into contact
with conflicts of almost every kind (sexual, psychological, familial, etc.). This makes this
work a fertile ground for addressing themes that can be considered controversial.
After receiving 120 copies of this work at the school where she teaches, a teacher decided
to work with it in three first-year high school classes. To do so, two questions were raised
that guided her work: (a) what possibly difficult/controversial themes does the work allow
to be addressed? and (b) how to approach them in a didactic-pedagogical project that
prioritizes respect and humanization of these themes for the sake of civic education and,
at the same time, strengthens youth leadership?
These questions outlined a didactic-pedagogical project that was put into practice in 2019.
The results of this project motivated the writing of this article, which aims to: (a) present
the themes raised for discussion with the students and (b) report on the practice that gave
life to this project.
To fulfill these objectives, we organize the text into three parts: in the first, we provide a
brief theoretical overview of what literature understands as controversial themes and their
importance in pedagogical practices; in the second, we list the supposedly controversial
themes addressed in the work; in the third, we describe the pedagogical practice (which
gives this article a tone of experiential report); finally, we make some final considerations.
Henick and Faria (2015) provide a historical overview of the concept of childhood in
Brazil and show that these transformations have always been related to the social class to
which the child belongs. An example of this is the reasons that led to the need for
education for children: while the children of the rich had to be educated to carry on family
business, those of the poor had their first pedagogical experiences in houses that received
abandoned children.
