Introdução
O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o artigo “Early morning university
classes are associated with impaired sleep and academic performance”,
publicado por Sing Chen Yeo e colaboradores em fevereiro de 2023. Nessa
análise, iremos abordar os seguintes aspectos:

▸ O contexto e a relevância do tema estudado pelos autores;

▸ A metodologia e os resultados obtidos na pesquisa;
▸ As limitações e as sugestões para futuros estudos na área;
▸ A discussão e as implicações dos achados para a educação e a saúde dos
estudantes universitários.

problemática
Segundo Marcus Crede (2010)3, O sono
inadequado afeta negativamente os processos
cognitivos de atenção e memória, comprometen-
do o desempenho acadêmico dos alunos em sala
de aula (ou seja, presenteísmo).
Além disso, sentir-se cansado e dormir demais
são frequentemente citados como motivos pelos
quais os universitários faltam às aulas8,9
(absenteísmo).
Estudos mostram que os universitários que
assistem às aulas regularmente e dormem bem
têm mais chances de obter notas altas3.

Estudos anteriores sugerem que os estudantes
universitários obtêm mais sono quando suas aulas
matinais começam mais tarde29,41. No entanto, faltam
evidências objetivas e os métodos tradicionais de coleta
de dados de sono-vigília (pesquisas e actigrafia)
geralmente capturam apenas uma pequena fração da
população estudantil.
O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi testar associações entre
horários de início das aulas e frequência, comportamento
do sono e desempenho acadêmico em uma universidade
de grande porte.

 3. Planejamento da
pesquisa
Para esta pesquisa foi necessário os metadados de conexão
Wi-Fi, para obter os dados de horário e localização dos alunos.
Para validar o uso dos dados do wi-fi, foi necessária a coleta manual de
frequência, dos instrutores do curso.
Para investigar as oportunidades de sono dos alunos foram recolhidos dados
de login da plataforma de ensino (LMS).
Para validar os dados recolhidos do LMS, foram usados dados de actigrafia
coletados de 181 estudantes de graduação.

 3. Planejamento
Foram usados para estimar as taxas de frequências
dos alunos, metadados de conexão Wi-Fi. Cada vez que o
Dispositivo habilitado para Wi-Fi de um aluno se conectava no wifi,
os dados de horário, e localização eram registrados.
As conexões Wi-Fi dos alunos nesses locais foram cruzadas com os
horários dos cursos
O método de uso de dados de conexão Wi-Fi para estimar a frequência às
aulas foi validado por meio da coleta de dados de frequência dos instrutores do
curso

pesquisa
As interações dos alunos com o LMS da universidade foram analisadas ao
longo de cinco semestres, usando todos os dados disponíveis no ALSET Data
Lake.
Os dados de frequência foram obtidos para 53
sessões de aula em 13 cursos diferentes. Os
instrutores que forneceram dados de frequência
foram recrutados a partir de uma amostra de
conveniência de professores envolvidos em pesquisa
educacional.
