Articles (definite and indefinite)
Os artigos são palavras usadas, geralmente, antes de um
substantivo (ou combinação de adjetivo seguido de
substantivo) para indicar o(s) termo(s) em questão. Eles
podem ser definidos (the), para indicar termos
conhecidos, ou indefinidos (a/an), para indicar termos
indeterminados ou desconhecidos para quem fala. Veja
os exemplos:

“I loved the dress she is wearing.”

O artigo definido “the” (o, a, os, as) é usado para
indicar tanto palavras que sejam masculinas quanto
femininas, assim como termos no singular e no plural,
sem distinção:

“The dress is beautiful.”


“The shoes are expensive.”
“I like the boots he is wearing.”
“She likes the shirt he is wearing.”

O mesmo vale para os artigos indefinidos “a” e “an”:

“I saw a dress in the mall.”


“She needs to buy a shirt.
“I want to buy an earring.”
“He needs to buy an overall.”

Perceba que usamos o artigo “a” antes de palavras


que começam com som de consoantes (dress, shirt
etc.) e “an” antes daquelas com som de vogais
(earring, overall etc.).
