AN EXPERIMENTATIONS MUSEUM
The Modern Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro has been consolidating a process of
transformation initiated in January 2020. The opening to the new, to cultural
diversity, to multiple dimensions of cultural patrimony and to experimentation
is something that has been sought more and more by MAM.
Still with the Cosme Alvez Netto auditorium closed, DOBRA – International
Experimental Film Festival will happen online again. This edition will show the
strength and creativity of contemporary experimental production. It is dozens
of new film productions created in the pandemic days and that can be watched
again for free in the whole world through the online channel of MAM’s
Cinematheque. It is with a renewed energy in this year of 2021 that MAM Rio
co-products one more edition of DOBRA – International Experimental Film
Festival. Long live to experimental film!

sobretudo no Brasil.
online, hoje a situação é diferente.

the textual language domain, complexifying the canons of objectivist and

between scientific knowledge and mythical and magical thinking.
In another type of approach, animism is also present in many cultures and belief
systems, which adopt this perspective as a form of reciprocal interaction with
other mundane entities. It is a type of thinking present in the north and in
the south of the Americas, in Siberia and in some parts of Southwest Asia. The
animist interpretation affirms that all beings are people, what differ us is
corporality. The term is an anthropological construction, and not a designation
given by the ethnicities themselves. In the last decades the ontological
theories have been widely investigated by thinkers such as Bruno Latour, Eduardo
Viveiros de Castro, Donna Haraway, Philippe Descola etc., which have been

razão a domesticaram.

recycled images, found footage, reused images. Regardless of the adopted
terminology, the practice involves the reuse of a cultural product resulting

from the interactions of a wide sociotechnical net: the film, considering, here,
its multiple devices. It is from this point that we can glimpse some
implications. Cinema has constituted itself from a diversified scientific and
technological mesh, which, associated with the modern context and sociocultural
vectors, molded and determinated modes of organization and production, forms of
distribution and exhibition, qualitative parameters, aesthetic models. Anyway,
a whole set of factors that provided the development of the hegemonic
cinematographic activity as we know it, but also, for that reason, ended up
domesticating it. This fact, in turn, trained our gaze accommodating it to the
consume of image patterns and narrative structures. The films of reuse, by the
many approaches that they utilize, seek exactly to destabilize these patterns,
drawing attention to certain aspects present in the reused material.
We can suggest, then, that in each film, or even only in a part of it, we find
exposed (or still hidden) a myriad of themes and issues about the world,
captured and registered by the cinematographic apparatus. It is from this
gathering, in the discoveries and in the encounters with these world fragments,
that we can deploy reflections about cinema, about its making, about the
socioeconomic dynamics that involves it in countless developments. In this
sense, thinking about an experimental ethnography associated to cinema, as
Catherine Russell says, becomes a methodological incursion that assumes
experimental film’s vanguardism, mobilizing its language-games and the filmic
form to historical purposes. The practice becomes a tool for re-thinking about
aesthetics and cultural representation.
Over the past century, notably after the Second World War, we perceive a
questioning and deepening exercise about cultural representations in cinema
(and also on TV), providing the appearance of outstanding works (here, of
course, restricted to just a little few examples): the seminal A Movie (Bruce
Conner, 1958), from which Patricia Mellencamp detached that the film
anticipated, in 30 years, the debates about mass culture; Perfect Film (Ken
Jacobs, 1985), which according to Tom Gunning is an “anthropological document”;
and Histoire(s) du Cinéma (Jean-Luc Godard, 1988) and its archaeology with
multiple relations established with contemporary culture. In Brazil, we can
point out Contestação (João Silvério Trevisan, 1969), Pacific (Marcelo Pedroso,
2009), and Um dia na vida (Eduardo Coutinho, 2010). Currently, we watch a
proliferation of films made from collected material from the internet,
videogames, hybrid collages between analog and digital archives, video essays,
and other numerous experienced forms in the convergence of old and new
technologies.

The relation between cinema and literature was always basic and primordial.
Without the influence of Charles Dickens, Griffith wouldn’t have conceived the
foundations of cinematographic language. In the modern civilization of image
machines, the films are like letters from the artist to an incoming public. The
desire to communicate shared with the hope of a castaway that throws the message
in a bottle. In this world of online exhibitions, more and more the reception
of a film is an encounter with a public that can’t be seen. The films in this
screening express imaginations and intimacies of the present moment, pandemic
diaries transformed in powerful experimentations with poetry and film language.
The screening brings together a set of films with a multiple and provoking latin

MODERNIDADE URBANA
- LINHAS DE RUA,
LINHAS DE FUGA
URBAN MODERNITY
– STREET LINES,
LINES OF FLIGHT
As

Hans Richter produced his abstract films in the beginning of the 1920’s
formulating, himself, the process for its execution. A cinematographic form
until then unknown was conceived, experienced and applied. The defining trace
of experimental film is to work in the extreme limits of cinematographic
expression. Seek constantly and redesign the frontiers that delimit a certain
way of thinking and adjusting language. We can think, by analogy, that just as
a blank sheet of paper keeps a secret reservoir of possibilities, whether to
writing or to graphism, the initial frame of a film has it too. The sequence
beginning in the first frame of a film appeals to a certain spelling, opens (in
each film) a form of cinematographic essay. In it, resources are summoned,
equations are uttered, visual and sound games are proposed.

Not recognizing the past does not mean ignoring it, and not believing

Vanguard (from the french avant-garde, “advanced guard”) is a term that belongs
to the military vocabulary. In this tradition, it refers to the first army line
in a battle order. Its use was incorporated in the cultural debate in the 20th
century, when some art movements elaborated their aesthetic programs as opposed
to models taken as classicists. Cinema also made itself present in this
discussion. An idea that crosses several groups and collectives in this context
was the disruption proposal with the past and the elaboration of new creation
procedures. The artists sought new ways of keeping culture alive, vibrating, in
a moment in which several experimentation and engagement forces arise. The
selection “Avante-Garde or cinema in the frontline” recovers the initial
impulse of experimental film, aligning several fields of activism to radical
aesthetic experiences. Art and politics advancing side by side. More than a
formal cinema proposal, there’s an authentic state of mind that permeates this
screening. Cinema as a battle and a resistance attitude faced with one of the
most urgent problems.
