COMPARATIVA
DOS
ADJETIVOS

As formas comparativas dos adjetivos em inglês
possuem 2 formas.

Pineapples are more delicious than oranges, but


oranges are cheaper than pineapples.
(Abacaxis são mais deliciosos que laranjas, mas
laranjas são mais baratas que abacaxis.)

a) quando o adjetivo possuir uma sílaba


acrescentamos -er.

E.g. cheap → cheaper tall → taller short


→ shorter

Mary is a tall woman, but John is
taller than Mary.
(Mary é uma mulher alta, mas John
é mais alto que Mary.)

Se o adjetivo terminar em CVC


(Consoante + Vogal + Consoante) a
última consoante é dobrada:

big → bigger hot → hotter


thin → thinner

Russia is bigger than


Brazil.
(A Rússia é maior que o
Brasil.)

Se o adjetivo acaba em -e só acrescentamos o -r.

large → larger cute → cuter


nice → nicer

Kittens are cute, but puppies are


cuter.
(Gatinhos são fofos, mas
cachorrinhos são mais fofos.)

Se o adjetivo tiver 1 ou 2 sílabas e terminar em –y


trocamos o y por –ier.
dry → drier pretty →
prettier heavy →
heavier

(Que são mais pesados,
elefantes ou hipopótamos?)

b) quando o adjetivo possuir 3 ou mais sílabas


usamos “more”.

delicious → more delicious beautiful →


more beautiful expensive → more expensive

Rio is more beautiful than São Paulo.


Whiskey is more expensive than beer
and wine.
(Rio é mais bonito que São Paulo.)
(Uísque é mais caro que cerveja e
vinho.)

Attention!

Alguns adjetivos de 2 sílabas aceitam as 2 formas.


simple → simpler / more simple clever →
cleverer / more clever

I think Math is simpler than Physics. / I think Math is


more simple than Physics.
(Eu penso que matemática é mais simples que física.)

Mas alguns apenas aceitam a forma com “more”.

famous → more famous


careful → more careful
peaceful → more
peaceful

Silvio Santos is more


famous than Gugu Liberato.
(Silvio Santos é mais famoso que Gugu Liberato.)

Irregular Comparative Forms:

good → better bad → worse far →


farther/further

The Beatles are better than The Rolling Stones.


(Os Beatles são melhores que os Rolling Stones.)

Bob’s behavior is worse than Susy’s.


(O comportamento do Bob é pior que o da Susy.)

Japan is farther from Brazil than South Africa.


(Japão é mais longe do Brasil que a África do Sul.)

Hippos are less heavy


than elephants. They are
less intelligent than
elephants too.
(Hipopótamos são menos
pesados que elefantes.
