respectivamente. As várias outras taxas empregadas na análise de
crescimento são matematicamente similares a algum desses três tipos
básicos (Hunt, 1982).
Além das taxas de crescimento, são também definidas as chamadas
razões simples, estimadas pela razão entre duas grandezas em determinada
época de avaliação. Dessa forma, podem-se definir a razão de área foliar
(RAF) e a área foliar específica (AFE) (Evans, 1972):

O influxo de N nas raízes foi inferior nas plantas sem poda do sistema
radicular no intervalo entre 30-60 DAT (Figura 3); em 60-90 DAT, não houve
diferença significativa entre os tratamentos de poda; e em 90-120 DAT, as
plantas com poda total apresentaram o maior influxo, com similaridade entre
as plantas com meia poda ou sem poda (Figura 3). Dessa forma, as plantas
com poda do sistema radicular compensaram parcialmente sua menor área
radicular por meio de maiores valores de influxo de N. É comum a observação
de relações compensatórias entre influxo de nutrientes e crescimento
radicular (Araújo & Teixeira, 2000). Como a acumulação de nutrientes é
fortemente determinada pela demanda da parte aérea, as diferenças no
tamanho do sistema radicular originam aparente diferença na absorção de
nutrientes por unidade de sistema radicular (Araújo, 2000). Entretanto, outros
processos podem estar associados com esse mecanismo compensatório
como a maior competição entre raízes, em consequência da ramificação
radicular, ou alternativas metabólicas da planta entre a alocação de C para
a biomassa estrutural de raízes, a respiração radicular ou a absorção de
nutrientes (Nielsen et al., 2001).
Os coeficientes de variação dos influxos de N foram bem superiores aos
da área radicular e do conteúdo de N, refletindo em valores mais amplos da
diferença mínima significativa estimada pelo teste de Tukey (Figura 3). No
método clássico de análise de crescimento, são intrínsecas as variâncias
superiores nas taxas de crescimento que nas grandezas primárias que as
originam (Causton & Venus, 1981), em particular nas taxas compostas que
incluem duas diferentes grandezas como o influxo radicular. Essas elevadas
variâncias muitas vezes dificultam a identificação de diferenças significativas
entre tratamentos nas taxas de crescimento, constituindo uma das grandes
limitações do método clássico (Evans, 1972; Causton & Venus, 1981). Apesar
dessa variabilidade, foi possível identificar diferenças no influxo de N entre
os tratamentos de poda de raízes (Figura 3), inclusive pela utilização de
cinco repetições para cada tratamento.

da depleção da solução nutritiva utiliza plantas de pequeno tamanho em
estádios iniciais de crescimento (Barber, 1984), sendo difícil vislumbrar seu
emprego em experimentos de longa duração. De outra forma, as taxas de
absorção de nutrientes oriundas da análise de crescimento podem ser
estimadas em plantas crescidas em solo, tanto em vaso quanto no campo,
em condições experimentais similares a cultivos comerciais.

de matéria seca (Siddiqi & Glass, 1981), definindo-se o índice de utilização

Keay et al. (1970) propuseram expressar a taxa de crescimento absoluto
por unidade de nutriente acumulado pela planta, definindo a taxa de utilização
de nutrientes, denominada por Hunt (1978) de taxa de utilização específica

Pelo método funcional, ajustando-se funções aos dados primários de U
e W, são obtidos valores instantâneos da TUE. Hunt (1978) e Hirose (1988)
apresentaram interessantes decomposições da TUE, associando-a com a
taxa de assimilação líquida ou com a concentração de nutrientes na planta.
