01 História
O aparecimento desta raça perde-se no tempo, alguns
autores apontam para a sua possível origem Celta.
As primeiras referências à raça Arouquesa surgem
num relatório da Sociedade Agrícola do Porto, de
1856, onde constam imensos elogios à grande
capacidade de trabalho destes animais nas zonas
declivosas do Douro Vinhateiro, assim como a sua
capacidade de engorda.
Silvestre Bernardo de Lima, na data de 1858 inicia a
caracterização da Raça Arouquesa, distinguindo 4
ecótipos. Nas 5 décadas seguintes, diversos autores
definem as características da raça, chegando a um
consenso em relação a ecótipos.

A raça Arouquesa é classificada como um grupo


polimorfo, com uma excelente aptidão para a
produção de leite, visando o elevado teor butiroso
para a produção de manteiga e produção de carne.
De 4 inicialmente caracterizados por Bernardo de Lima, distinguiram apenas 3 ecótipos:

O sistema de produção é em extensivo e o


efetivo raramente ultrapassa os cinco animais por
criador e a reprodução funciona por cobrição
natural ou por postos de cobrição.
As crias desta raça normalmente são desmamadas
por volta dos 6 meses de idade e abatidas ao
desmame.
O uso desta raça era de frequente para o trabalho
de campo, e tradicionalmente exploradas na
função leiteira.
