In 2002, the International Animation Festival of Brazil celebrates its tenth anniversary,
and there are many good reasons for commemorating. The partnership between Petrobras
and Anima Mundi is one of them. For the sixth consecutive year the company has the honor
of serving as the exclusive sponsor of this event that will once again present the Brazilian
public with the best national and international production in animated cinema.
The history of this partnership is full of milestones. With each edition of the Festival the
number of spectators and exhibition rooms has grown. This year Anima Mundi received
760 films, of which 166 are Brazilian. This years Festival also includes new categories
and will be releasing a DVD compilation. That is why Anima Mundi is recognized as one
of the five most important animation festivals in the world.
More than a space for reflection on Brazilian art, Anima Mundi has also become a key
forum for experimenting new idioms in exchanging films and ideas.
Petrobras, as the main cultural sponsor in Brazil, reaffirms its role in supporting this
initiative that has become a highlight on the countrys calendar of great cultural events.

ano seguido no CCBB de So Paulo.
prprio do homem encantar-se no s com o real, mas forjar vida onde no
haveria, dar condio magia, ao invisvel, ao no natural. por isso que s vezes
uma nuvem tambm um elefante que flutua, ou dedos que sob a luz viram um
coelho assustado. Est a a fora da animao: subverte a realidade e proporciona
idlios que s vezes pedem s um lpis sobre papel ou uma pedra sobre a outra.
Uma afiada ponta de pedra que causa uma emoo imensa, sem usar palavras,
apenas traando uma imagem e empurrando-a ao encontro do movimento.
Talvez isso explique porque Anima Mundi tornou-se essencial para a animao
brasileira, no apenas por reunir os realizadores de maior prestgio, revelar talentos
ou ter mais filmes inscritos a cada ano e o pblico multiplicado. Mas tambm
pelos traos que se mexem e nos fazem rir, chorar, pensar. Quando a tecnologia se
junta a tudo isso, ento, nem se fala.
Isso explica porque o Banco do Brasil investe em Anima Mundi: onde h criao

Banco do Brasil once again has the honor of presenting Anima Mundi, the
International Animation Festival of Brazil, which we have been with since the first
edition at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro and for the second
consecutive year at the CCBB in So Paulo.
It is natural for man to marvel not only at what is real, but to create life where there
would normally be none, giving way to magic, the invisible, the unnatural. That is why
a cloud is sometimes also a floating elephant, or fingers that become a frightened rabbit
under the spotlight. Therein lies the strength of animation: it subverts reality and creates
idylls that are sometimes made only of pencil on paper or one rock on top of another. A
pointed rock that causes immense emotion, with no words, just tracing an image and
nudging it into movement.
Maybe this explains why Anima Mundi has become essential to Brazilian animation,
not only by bringing together the most prestigious artists, revealing talents, and having
more films and more viewers every year. But also for the animated strokes that move and
make us laugh, cry, and think. And when technology joins in, well, it just goes without
saying.
That explains why Banco do Brasil invests in Anima Mundi: wherever creation defies
adversity is where we want to be. We thank Anima Mundi, the artists, and the public for
the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious exhibit. Hurray for the dream and for
our ability to look at a stone and see life in it!

The Anima Mundi Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary, which is reason for great
joy at Correios, the Brazilian Postal and Telegraph Company. As partners in the Festival
ever since it began, we are witness to both the challenges and growing success of this cultural
festival that has revolutionized animation cinema in Brazil and is now the fifth largest
event of its kind in the world.
Besides contributing to an event that attracts the best in animation, convening a growing
number of young Brazilian talents and expanding national interest in film production that
seduces people of all races, cultures, and ages, Anima Mundi has consecrated an art which,
like the Correios, is based on movement and integration among people.
To discover what animation cinema and postal services have in common, all one has to do is
follow or imagine the journey an ordinary letter takes. In one of the most important systems
at Correios, the automated screening of letters or an automatic conveyor belt for separating
parcels, one cannot help but perceive the similarities with animation cinema. Everything is
movement, synchronism, acceleration.
When we say movement, we refer to the rapid pace of the modern world, the daily struggle
against time, the challenges of rendering a service that people expect more and more
from every day, and technology and organization. In the flow of letters and parcels, this
continuous and harmonic movement can be seen in operating fleets with hundreds of
aircraft, thousands of trucks, cars, motorcycles, boats, and a veritable army of mail carriers
crisscrossing this continental-sized country with its myriad contrasts, to collect and deliver
postal items to millions of Brazilians.
It is thus a source of great satisfaction for the Correios to once again support and host
this event, with its history of success, lauded by critics and applauded by the public, in our
Cultural Center. Yet for us at Correios, our greatest joy in this partnership is to see each
spectators face light up at the Festivals animated images, which never fail to enchant
people, leading them to participate through their imaginations in the fabulous moments
evoked by Art.

How many frames per second make a movie scene? And how many drawings are needed
to form this same second? The second is a precise one, since sometimes a blink of the eye
can steal a fragment of the scene from us. And by definition, thats what cinema is an
illusion. A concept born of the movement formed on the human retina by that meeting
of two rays of light at a given second and a given speed those famous 24 frames a
second. And how we love to be fooled like this! Its like a slight-of-hand trick. What
matters is not how the illusion is performed, but its effect.
How wonderful that Anima Mundi has brought us 10 editions of this magic! Conceived
by a daring and visionary group, the Festival has grown year by year, reaching more and
more viewers and featuring revolutionary new forms of animation. And all this in a
varied program that provides spectators with films from all kinds of countries and fosters
contact with different cultures and animation techniques. Anima Mundi is also a great
chance for Brazilian animators, since the festival serves as a showcase for their work and
a source of encouragement for them to produce more.
We are proud to host Anima Mundi for the third consecutive time. Once again we
will turn the SESI Popular Theater into a movie house. Anima Mundi is the great
animation festival in the city of So Paulo. For 5 days and 30 sessions, well enjoy a feast
of magic for the eyes and the soul, not an optical illusion, but the realization of an idea
born 10 years ago.

Saldanha graduated from the New York School of Visual Arts and supervises numerous animation projects. Hes
always creative and surprising. Whoever saw Joes Apartment knows what were talking about. His talent
also includes advertising, where he has won a number of awards for commercials that will be shown together
with his short films and features in Animated Chat, Anima Mundi 2002. A mouse in your hand and an idea
in your head.

I discovered animation almost by accident, but was immediately seduced by the feeling of being in control of magical
forces. Finding my own way into animation, I enjoyed seeing how animated lines could morph one thing into another,
creating bizarre and poetic juxtapositions of images. I found that the trance-like repetitive process of making
animation could allow access to unconscious material.
Although I love watching light and funny films, I do not want to spend the length of time that animation takes just to
tell a joke. I dont see why animation should always be funny and undemanding, any more than we would expect these
qualities from live-action film or painting.
My films are dark, and deal with subject matter that I find charged or difficult - death, sexuality, violence.
I have been lucky enough to make four of my own films (one is due to be finished in August) and have recently worked
with Shynola on a music video for UNKLE.
I teach at the Royal College of Art in London and, until recently, at the National Film and Television School.

collaboration with the novelist Sara Maitland, and drawn on desktop computer incorporating archive footage.

Como todos j esto cansados de saber que uma imagem vale mais que mil palavras, a vai: a
Vetor Zero a produtora paulista criadora da tartaruga da Brahma, aquele bichinho esperto
cercado de garotas bacanas. A tartaruga , por si s a sntese do caminho que os scios da
empresa, Alceu Baptista e Sergio Salles, traaram desde que resolveram investir em computao
grfica, em 1985. A Vetor Zero criativa, malandra e sabe que devagar se vai longe. Mas s
vezes no custa pegar um atalho.
Numa poca em que todos imaginavam a computao grfica como um fim, eles enxergaram
a manipulao das imagens no computador como um meio. Um meio para criar. Alceu e
Srgio so formados pela Escola de Comunicao e Arte da USP. Com um (hoje j arcaico!)
Amiga 1000, aplicaram seus conhecimentos em cinema e animao para evoluir muito alm
da ferramenta. O reconhecimento veio com o destaque cada vez maior no meio publicitrio,
coroado com prmios como os sete Lees conquistados em Cannes e o Prmio para Filme
Comercial do ltimo Festival de Annecy (Frana) para a famosa Tartaruga. No Animago
(Alemanha), a Tartaruga dividiu o prmio com a Lesma da Audi, e a hiper-realista garota
digital Kaya foi considerada a melhor personagem 3D. Todos da Vetor Zero.
A Vetor Zero est agora associada Lobo Filmes, que desenvolve projetos de design para a
televiso, animao tradicional e stop motion. So 17 pessoas trabalhando em equipe.
No Papo Animado, vamos assistir a um panorama do que faz e pretende continuar fazendo esta
usina de animao e efeitos especiais, em vrias dimenses.

Since everybody knows that a picture is worth more then a thousand words, here goes: the So Paulo
studio called Vetor Zero created the now-familiar Brahma Brewery advertising Tortoise, a crafty little
reptile dude whos always surrounded by babes. The Tortoise itself symbolizes the path laid out by Vetor
Zero partners Alceu Baptista and Sergio Salles when they decided to invest in computer graphics in
1985. Like Tortoises, the Vetor Zero people are creative, smart, and know that slow movers can go a long
way and finish first. But sometimes it doesnt hurt to take a shortcut.
At a time when everyone else saw computer graphics as an end, they saw it as the means. The means
to create. Alceu and Sergio graduated from the University of So Paulo School of Communication
and Art. Starting what is now an archaic (!) Amiga 1000, they applied their knowledge of cinema
and animation to evolve far beyond their hardware. Recognition came with their growing visibility in
advertising, crowned by awards such as seven Lions at Cannes and the Commercial Film Award at
the Annecy Festival (France) for the famous Tortoise. In Animago (Germany), the Tortoise shared
the prize with the Audi Slug, and the hyper-realistic digital girl Kaya was considered the best 3D
character. All by Vetor Zero.
Vetor Zero is now associated with Lobo Filmes, which develops design projects for TV, traditional
animation, and stop motion. There are 17 people working on the staff.
The Animated Chat will feature a panorama of the work this animation and special effects factory is
doing and intends to keep on doing in several dimensions.

The British Council is offering Anima Mundi spectators a special day devoted entirely to British animated film
production, a powerhouse in international animation. Animation UK, the British Animation Day, features a
special program from Aardman Animations, with Peter Lord in person, and two programs organised by animation
critic and scholar Jayne Pilling and commented live by animator Ruth Lingford, guest of Anima Mundi and the
British Council. Ruth and Jayne bring a selection of outstanding videoclips from the United Kingdom, with detailed
information about the respective authors and techniques. The other program will exhibit films made by great British
animators in their early careers, with all the signs of genius characterising major international animated productions.

Brazil-Canada Retrospective
Alm da polcia montada, do maple que decora a bandeira deles e cobre os nosso waffles, das
montanhas de neve e do frio glacial, o Canad se faz presente h muito tempo no imaginrio
dos brasileiros atravs de seus filmes de animao. Quase todo animador brasileiro assistiu, em
cinematecas, na escola, festivais ou nas tevs educativas, aos filmes de Norman McLaren e do
National Film Board, e se impressionou para o resto da vida.
Na dcada de 80, esta influncia tomou corpo no Rio de Janeiro atravs de um acordo
de cooperao cultural entre os governos do Brasil e Canad. Um centro de produo
foi construdo (e permanece at hoje, com o nome de CTAv-Funarte) e o primeiro curso
profissional de animao aconteceu durante dois anos (1985 a 1987) com a dedicada presena
de dois animadores canadenses: Jean-Thomas Bdard e Pierre Veilleux.
Todo este movimento influenciou no s os participantes do curso mas toda uma gerao de
animadores.
Um dos filhotes desta histria o prprio festival Anima Mundi, pois seus quatro diretores
se conheceram trabalhando juntos nesta poca to frutfera. Praticamente todos os envolvidos
naquele processo so hoje pessoas-chave na produo da animao brasileira.
Nos dez anos de nosso festival, queremos lembrar os filmes que tanto nos marcaram, e os
resultados que deixaram por aqui em forma de outros filmes. Vamos assistir, lado-a-lado, as
lembranas de obras-primas do National Film Board e alguns dos ecos desta influncia na
produo de brasileiros, atravs de filmes realizados por brasileiros no Canad (Animando e
Jonas e Lisa), sob a orientao de canadenses no Brasil (Noturno, Informstica, Em
Nome da Lei, Quando os Morcegos se Calam e Alex) ou realizados aps esta convivncia
(Salamandras).
Para realizar este programa tivemos como sempre o apoio do NFB, CTAv-Funarte, e
especialmente da Embaixada do Canad e do Ministrio das Relaes Exteriores e do Comrcio
Internacional do Canad, para trazer os filmes e nosso mestre Pierre Veilleux em pessoa, que
apresenta as sesses no Rio de Janeiro.

No Rio de Janeiro acontece mais uma vez o grande espao interativo do festival, no qual o pblico
realiza seus prprios filmes de animao com materiais diversos, equipamentos de vdeo quadro-aquadro, e a ajuda de instrutores.
Seis maneiras diferentes de dar vida imaginao:
Zootrpio - antigo brinquedo do sculo XIX. Os participantes fazem 16 desenhos e os colocam no
zootrpio. Ao girar o tambor, criada a iluso do movimento
Direto na Pelcula os desenhos so feitos com canetas especiais sobre pelcula transparente 35mm,
que logo aps projetada numa Moviola, equipamento profissional para edio e visualizao de
filmes.
Desenho Animado a tcnica mais conhecida de animao. Os desenhos de uma cena so feitos em
mesas de luz, um sobre o outro, usando papis furados sobre pinos de registro. Os desenhos so ento
gravados quadro-a-quadro com o equipamento de vdeo.
Objetos Pequenos grupos de participantes se organizam para criar roteiros e personagens. Estes so
feitos com objetos ou modelados com massinha, e animados na hora com o vdeo quadro-a-quadro.
Pixilation Este nome esquisito para a animao de pessoas de carne e osso, como se fossem
bonecos! Os participantes se fantasiam e criam historias e movimentos absurdos que eles mesmo
executam, fazendo poses quadro-a-quadro.
Areia Uma tcnica simples de resultados surpreendentes: Uma camada de areia colocada sobre
uma mesa iluminada por baixo. O vdeo quadro-a-quadro registra a transformao dos suaves
desenhos feitos com dedos, pincis ou outros instrumentos sobre a areia, num jogo de formas em
claro-escuro.

In Rio de Janeiro the main interactive feature takes place at the festival, a space where the audience creates
their own animated films with a variety of materials, video equipment and the help of instructors.
Six different ways to bring life to your imagination:
Zoetrope a 19th Century toy. The participants create 16 drawings and put them inside the zoetrope. As the
wheel turns, the illusion of movement is achieved.
Direct on Film drawings are made with special pens on transparent 35mm film, which is projected right
away in a Moviola, the professional equipment for viewing and editing films.
Cartoon the most popular animation technique. The drawings for each scene are done over under-lit tables,
one after another, using punched paper and special registration pegs. The drawings are then recorded frameby-frame with the video equipment.
Stop motion Small groups of participants are organized to create scripts and characters. Those are made of
objects or modeled in plasticine and recorded instantly in stop motion using the frame-by-frame video.
Pixilation This weird name stands for the animation done with real people, as if they were puppets!
The participants dress up in funny disguises and create absurd stories and movements which they perform
themselves, making still poses recorded frame-by-frame.
Sand A simple technique that produces amazing results: a layer of sand is laid over an under-lit table.
The frame-by-frame video records the subtle drawings made on the sand with the use of fingers, brushes or
whatever tools a game of shapes made out of shade and light.

Esta escola francesa de nome curioso, abreviao de
Escola Superior de Informtica de Comunicao , foi
criada em 1988 na regio de Valenciennes e hoje uma das
mais bem sucedidas iniciativas em ensino de animao por
computador no mundo.
Os filmes realizados pelos estudantes da Supinfocom,
alguns deles participantes da seleo de Anima Mundi
2002, se destacam por seus estilos grficos refinados bem
integrados animao por computador, e por seus roteiros
originais e inventivos.
Dentro da proposta de Anima Mundi de promover a
discusso sobre o ensino de animao, ainda incipiente
no Brasil, trazemos ao nosso ciclo de palestras a diretora
da Supinfocom, Marie-Anne Fontenier, artista grfica
responsvel pela escola desde sua fundao, presente no
Rio de Janeiro graas Embaixada da Frana, parceira de
Anima Mundi desde o primeiro ano do festival.
Marie-Anne Fontenier vai nos falar sobre a proposta
didtica de sua escola, os desafios e conquistas ao se
aventurar neste campo pioneiro, e mostrar alguns
dos premiados trabalhos de seus alunos. Ela organiza
anualmente os encontros E-Magiciens, festival de animao
por computador e internet, e prepara a abertura de
SUPINFOGAME, escola de formao de game-designers.

region and has become one of the worlds most successful
initiatives in teaching computer animation.

Naturalmente, ao longo de 10 anos, Anima Mundi
tornou-se o ponto de encontro dos animadores brasileiros.
Esta reunio marcada para o Ciclo de Palestras pretende
ser apenas a partida para outros encontros e decises
importantes, que perdurem alm do festival, tornando cada
vez mais ativa a classe da animao brasileira.

naturally the meeting point for the Brazilian animators. With
this meeting, scheduled for the lectures series of Anima Mundi,

decisions, which must last beyond the festival, making the class of
