VIVE E TRABALHA EM LIVES AND WORKS IN SALVADOR Antônio Társis
A self-taught artist, Antônio Társis was born and lives in Salvador,
Bahia. He began painting at the age of sixteen, and at eighteen
started realizing projects in other mediums, like photography,
painting on unusual mediums, objects and collages. His
grandparents were market vendors, and as a child Antônio moved
to the Sete Portas neighborhood, known for the informal
commerce and hardware stores, a place from which the artist takes
his most recent aesthetical references that are connected to the
city’s historic context, a Salvador in eternal transformation.

Minha mãe e suas ferramentas My Mother and Her Tools 2014
percursos cotidianos, as leituras, as experiências, as memórias.

“I’m interested in the unfinished state of things,” says Eduardo Montelli about the origin
of his works. The artist turns to this state of incompleteness, so dear to our life – to what
we are or are always becoming –, when he questions the world. His queries come from
the universe he inhabits: his childhood home, his day-to-day routes, what he reads, his
experiences and memories. With the curiosity of a child, the artist scrutinizes this
universe and spies on himself, as if he were inviting us to regard our own places, paths
and life experiences. EDUARDO MONTELLI, PORTO ALEGRE, RS, 1989

SANTIDIO PEREIRA, CURRAL COMPRIDO, PI, 1996
VIVE E TRABALHA EM LIVES AND WORKS IN SÃO PAULO
As paredes
Santidio Pereira was born in 1996. At the age of 9 he already played with drawing and painting. The
wooden walls of the precarious house he shares with his mother in the Favela do Nove, near the Ceasa,
still hold the drawings he made as a child. At the age of 14, he began to engrave under Fabrício
Lopez’s and Flávio Castellan’s guidance – two excellent graphic artists – who taught the boys who
frequent Instituto Acaia, a NGO that develops work in the Ceasa region in São Paulo.
The work developed by Santidio Pereira arises, primarily, as an unfolding of his poetic
perspective on his homeland’s landscape, the state of Piauí. Marked by the strong
presence of the caatinga – the region’s biome –, the Piauí landscape inhabits the artist’s
imagination; through woodcut technique, he explores several ways of depicting it.
His process establishes relations between particular issues of the medium with the
themes he addresses. From the wood matrixes themselves – their grains and textures
–, used several times to represent forests, to the way he handles the paint juxtapositions,
it is an analogous process to landscapes’ formation.
In one of the works shown in this exhibition, it is possible to see vestiges of a horse that,
being overlaid by layers of vegetation, becomes nearly abstract. The resulting
intersections of the sequence of images touch on an essential element in his practice:
memory. Santidio rarely bases his works on photographic images, prioritizing his own
recollections. In one of our conversations, he casually explained: “Most of the times it
comes from the noggin.”
In the smaller prints, the confluence of the flat colored areas registers the simple
manner in which he is surprised by the material. It is this encounter that seems to make
us project a horizon.
