Uma boa leitura é um grande saber
MATERIALIZE
brancas, magras e heterossexuais. Onde estão as pessoas negras? E os indígenas? E
as pessoas gordas? E as com deficiência? E as homossexuais?

perfeito do modo indicativo, pronomes possessivos, saibam fornecer informações
pessoais e fazer perguntas aos colegas.
DESENVOLVIMENTO:

próprias canções, pois quem dá escuta as mulheres?
Quais?

A língua primeira (materna) é bem-vinda.
Brasil para que as pessoas se autoidentifiquem como negras;
sobre “afrodescendentes”;
• Problematize sobre a importância desses dados para as políticas públicas;
53

Explore o debate sobre as leis no Brasil
que valorizam a reflexão.
PASSO 3 – 10 minutos
escritas no fórum.
PASSO 5 – 5 minutos
possibilite a interação.
• Organize as ideias apresentadas. (5 minutos)
PASSO 2 – 15 minutos
PASSO 3 – 15 minutos
a) O uso das estruturadas linguísticas estudadas (comparação);
b) A organização discursiva (coerência e coesão);

as informações.

A patriarchal society.
STEP 3: Review of concepts discussed - concepts presented in the intro and topic
diagram. Using their notebooks, students must produce a mental map of the text and
concepts learned.
ASSESSMENT:
• It is expected that students understand the ethnic and cultural differences from
the subject addressed, and express an attitude of respect for cultural diversities;
• Divide the class into groups, each being responsible.
• Students should research about typical cuisine, dances, popular festivals, religious
events. The potential of each group is fully exploited.
Homework: Creating a poster and search about cultural events in other states and
countries and the socio-historical context.
• Produce in a group a poster with the theme: Diversity Culture in the world.
• Posters must be presented in the classroom.
• The teacher should evaluate poster exposure and presentation.
NOTE TO TEACHER:
The teacher must be able to consider differences as contributing factors to the
identity formation process, because there is no other possibility to build this vision,
except through the school’s daily practice and reflection on these issues. Therefore,
the suggestion is to expand the discussion by holding a forum at the school with
guests to discuss the topic.
Interdisciplinary relations with Portuguese and History
• Search for the term “diversity and multiculturalism” in dictionaries.
• Reading texts related to the subject.
• Presentation of works in the form of seminars.

AUGUST FESTIVAL IN CACHOEIRA CITY OF BAHIA.
The Sisterhood of Our Lady of the Good Death
(Irmandade da Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte) is a small
but renowned Afro-Catholic religious group in the state
of Bahia, Brazil.
Founded in the early 19th century as a Church-sponsored
beneficent Sisterhood for female African slaves and
Source: O que fazer na Bahia former slaves, it became one of the oldest and most
respected worship groups for Candomblé, the major
African-based religion in Brazil. The Sisterhood walking street processions some of
them of a very advanced age, all descendants of slaves, parade through the town
with a statue of the Our Lady of Glory which is symbolically buried to ascend into
the heavens on the following day. On this month the city of Cachoeira receives many
tourists and others who return, as it is difficult to resist so much charm and shine.
TRADITION
In the tradition, the Sisterhood also prays that they and
all have a “good death”, an aspiration even more desired
in times of so much violence and disrespect for human
life. Remember that the Sisterhood has its own rituals
and these are secret. The party has samba de roda and
food distribution and rituals with lots of banquets. Source: Salvador da Bahia

Theme: Identity.
Title: Who am I? Negotiated identity.
Discussion through the Netflix series: “When they see us” and “Black Mirror” - “White
Bear - episode”.
Public: High School.
1. Description: The cinematographic community continues to generate more and
more content, many of them disfiguring the image of the black, as well as projecting
more and more sexist, homophobic content, etc.
However, some productions led us to reflect on this prejudiced and dominant
construction, making us able to recognize our identity as it really is, breaking the
limits that society impose on us. These are examples of “When they see us” and “Black
Mirror” - “White Bear - episode”. Blacks are pushed to their limits, accused unjustly and
without proof; we must ask ourselves until when we will let our image be constructed
in this way.
2. Main aim: Introduce and discuss the question of identity.
3. Subsidiary aim(s): Promote oral discussions considering two recent materials
available on media.
4. Content: How to write an essay (instructions) + theme related vocabulary.
5. Materials:
• Black Mirror. 2nd season: “White Bear”. Created by: Charlie Brooker. Directed by:
Carl Tibbetts. Producted by: Barney Reisz. United Kingdom, 2013. (44 min).
• Locke John, “Of Identity and Diversity” Chapter XXVII of An Essay Concerning

• When They See Us. Created by: Ava Duvernay. Directed by: Ava Duvernay.
Produced by: Kris Browers.United States,2019. (64-88 minutes).
6. Assessment: Series comparison essay assignment.
7. Suggested time: 6 classes of 60 minutes.
PRE TASK:
Begin the discussion based on two questions:
• Do I believe more in what I think of myself or what the society think about me?
• Who am I and what is my value as a world citizen?
INTRO:
Have you ever stopped to think about how society in general, indirectly or directly tries
to diminish our identity? We, Negroes, are victims of prejudices and direct racism,
rooted daily and often silenced.
In the proposed lesson we are going to raise our eyes and lines to two popular content
on Netflix, the series: “When they see us” and “Black Mirror” - “White Bear - episode”.
Both are extremely strong and remind us of our reality. In the first one plot five young
black boys are unjustly accused of a crime that they did not commit on and even
without evidence they are put in jail.
And on the second one, the government imposes an eternal punishment on a black
woman in a technological way as a kind of life imprisonment, making her life a reality
show, erasing memories from her mind without been given for us any reason that she
really was the guilty one.
How close are these series to our reality?
That is what we are going to discuss.
DEVELOPMENT:
STEP 1: Students are going to read the chapter XXVII of identity and diversity by Locke
in the book “Locke on Personal Identity: Consciousness and Concernment – updated
edition” (2011) and have a group discussion on it.
STEP 2: Watch the series When They See Us and discuss the concept of identity
presented in step 1.
STEP 3: Watch the Black Mirror episode White Bear and discuss the concept of identity
presented in step 1.
112
MATERIAIS DIDÁTICOS COM FOCO NA DIVERSIDADE ÉTNICO-RACIAL
STEP 4: Class discussion: compare the question of identity displayed in both and raise
the question of skin color as meaning of punishment.
STEP 5: Present the structure of an essay: introduction, body and conclusion.
ASSESSMENT:
Series comparison essay assignment.
Having in mind the concepts of identity and punishment studied, write an essay
balancing these two topics with the series presented. Be creative and use your own
imagination and ideas.
After that, ask the students to change their essays with a classroom colleague, so they
can have a second opinion before give this material to you in order to be graded.
They have to consider the following:
• Did she/he answer the prompt?
• Does each paragraph do what it is supposed to do (introduction/body/conclusion)?
• Will a reader be able to understand and follow my essay/ is it logical?
• Do all the facts and examples support my main idea?
• Are the sentences clear and effective?
NOTE TO TEACHER:
It is important that the students watch the series in class, so an internet connection
and some technological devices are necessary.

EXPANSION OF KNOWLEDGE...
Although textured hair goes by many names, such as curly, kinky, or coily,
nappy hair is specifically used when speaking about the hair of black people. The
term has historically been a racist term. The word nappy is evidenced since at
least the 1880s, an adjective form of nap, a term for the raised fibers on a fabric.
Nappy, then, may have originated in pejorative reference to the frizzy texture of
cotton picked and prepared by slaves.
During the 20th century, many black Americans embraced African aesthetics,
including the very natural hair many whites previously disparaged as nappy. By
the 1990s, nappy hair was seeing increasing use in popular black media—and
reclamation, especially by black women. Even as the natural hair movement was
underway among black women in the 2000s, nappy hair still carried a powerful
racist and misogynist force, especially in the mouth of non-black woman.
Despite such instances, black women continue to reclaim the word. Many
natural hair blogs and YouTubers incorporate nappy in their social-media handles
and otherwise use the word in a positive way for their own hair.

WHO IS SHE?
INTRODUCTION
Katherine Coleman was born on August 26, 1918, in White
Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Her intelligence and skill with
numbers became obvious when she was a child. She was in high
school by the time she was 10 years old. Katherine graduated
from West Virginia State College in 1937 with highest honors
and then took a teaching job in Virginia.
Source: Criacionismo.com.br
In 1939 Katherine was selected to be one of the first three African American students
to enroll in a graduate program at West Virginia University. She studied math but
soon left to take care of her family.
CAREER
In 1953 Johnson began work at the West Area Computing unit of the National
Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The West Computers, as they were
known, were a group of African American women. They studied data from tests
and provided mathematical computations that were essential to the success of the
U.S. space program.
The West Computers were segregated from white workers. They were forced to use
separate bathrooms and dining facilities. That changed when NACA became NASA
in 1958.
At NASA Johnson was a member of the Space Task Group. She calculated the flight
path for the spacecraft that put the first U.S astronaut in space in 1961. The year
before she had coauthored a paper with an engineer. It was the first time a woman
in her division received credit as an author of a research report. She authored or
coauthored 26 research reports during her career.
In 1962 John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth. However, before he
left the ground, he wanted to make sure the electronic computer had planned the
flight correctly. He asked to have Johnson double check the computer’s calculations.
Johnson was also part of the team that calculated where and when the rocket
would be launched that would send the first three men to the Moon. Johnson also
worked on the space shuttle program. She retired from NASA in 1986. Johnson died
on February 24, 2020.

3. Read the text below and answer the questions about it.
The lessons were paid for by family friends including a white couple in the town.
Eunice’s father, John Divine Waymon, had been an entertainer before he chose to
move his family to Tyron, a North Carolina resort town, and set up a barbershop and
dry cleaners to support his family.
Not only did her musically talented parents back their child prodigy offspring, Miss
Mazzy and the entire community supported the Eunice Waymon Fund, a bank account
that family, friends, and Tyron residents envisioned would allow her to become the
first black American classical pianist. Over the years the fund grew large enough
to support her advanced education. Waymon spent one year at Juilliard School of
Music in New York, where she studied with Dr. Carl Friedburg. She had planned to
attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but failed the recital
entrance performance and was not admitted. Convinced that she was rejected on
racial grounds, she changed her life direction.
131
MATERIAIS DIDÁTICOS COM FOCO NA DIVERSIDADE ÉTNICO-RACIAL
Indicative of this change was her invention of a stage name. She chose “Nina,” a
nickname given to her by a former boyfriend, and “Simone” after the French actress
Simone Signoret. Nina Simone soon began performing in jazz clubs. Her powerful
stage presence and soulful voice attracted the attention of the recording industry.
She was signed by the Bethlehem label in 1957. Her 1958 hit “I Loves You Porgy” sold
a million records.
Influenced by the civil rights movement in the 1960s, Simone became known as the
“Singer of the Black Revolution.” She composed and recorded a number of songs
with political protest themes including “To Be Young, Gifted and Black,” “Old Jim
Crow,” “Why? (The King of Love Is Dead),” “Backlash Blues” and “Mississippi Goddam.”
Simone also collaborated with Liberia friends Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, and
Lorraine Hansberry to financially support the movement and took part in marches
and spoke and performed at civil rights rallies.
In the early seventies, disillusioned by life in the United States, Simone divorced
her manager-husband Andrew Stroud and moved first to Barbados and then to ,
Switzerland, and the Netherlands before finally settling in France in 1992. Simone
remained there until her death in 2003. Her 1993 autobiography I Put a Spell on You
was made into a French documentary, Nina Simone: La Legende. Nina Simone died
at her home in Carry-le-Rouet France on April 21, 2003.

Go over the answers and correct, if necessary. Ask students which facts they knew
about and their opinions.
STEP 2: Ask students to write 3-4 personal sentences about their past and present,
using BUT to link them. (eg. I can stay out late, but when I was younger I couldn’t).
Each student should choose one of their sentences to read out loud. Students discuss
their answers.

HANDOUT
TEXT 1:
RIO DE JANEIRO -- When Rafaela Matos saw police helicopters over her favela and
heard gunshots, she fell to her knees and asked God to protect her son, João Pedro.
Then she called the boy to make sure he was OK.
“Be calm,” João Pedro wrote back, explaining that he was at his aunt’s house and
everything was fine, Rafaela told The Associated Press. Minutes after he sent the
message, police burst in and shot the 14-year-old in the stomach with a high-caliber
rifle at close range.
João Pedro Matos Pinto was one of more than 600 people killed by police in the state
of Rio de Janeiro in the first months of this year. That’s almost double the number of
people killed by police over the same period in the entire U.S., which has 20 times Rio’s
population. Like João Pedro, most of those killed in Rio were black or biracial and lived
in the city’s poorest neighborhoods, or favelas.
As the Black Lives Matter movement brings hundreds of thousands to the streets
around the world, demonstrators outraged by João Pedro’s death one month ago
have been organizing the largest anti-police brutality demonstrations in years on the
streets of Rio.
Still, the protests are nowhere near the size and public impact of other countries. To
protesters, their struggle to gain momentum in the country where more than half the
population is black or biracial, with a police violence problem that far overshadows
other nations, is evidence of the depth of racism and complacence. […]
João Pedro’s father, Neilton Pinto, was serving up fish at a bayside kiosk when he
heard the choppers. By the time he reached the scene, police had already taken the
teen’s body away, he said, sitting beside Rafaela for an interview just before the one-
month anniversary of the incident.
142
MATERIAIS DIDÁTICOS COM FOCO NA DIVERSIDADE ÉTNICO-RACIAL
Police never took João Pedro to a hospital and his family began a frantic search.
Rafaela, 36, received a glimmer of hope when she saw on her phone that her son’s
WhatsApp was active. “Hi … ,” she wrote. “Hi … Hi ... Hi … Talk to me …”
No response came from whomever was using João Pedro’s phone. But a campaign
swept across social media and his body was tracked down the next day, inside a police
forensic institute.
“Good people live in the favela, people with families, who plan on growing in this life,”
Neilton, 40, said. “I’m sure if this were in wealthy areas, police wouldn’t act this way,
breaking down the house of someone good.”
Benones’ investigation seeks to hold the Brazilian state responsible for João Pedro’s
death, alleging it occurred in the context of institutional racism. All depositions and
eyewitness accounts Benones has reviewed indicate João Pedro and others present
posed no threat to officers on the scene, he said. […]
Rio police killed a record 1,814 people in 2019, according to official data — triple the
number five years earlier. The 2020 death toll is on track for a repeat. […]
Rio’s civil police said in an e-mailed statement that it is investigating the circumstances
surrounding João Pedro’s death and that three officers have been suspended. Rio’s
military police didn’t respond to multiple requests seeking comment.
Brazil’s Supreme Court on June 5 banned police operations in favelas until the
coronavirus pandemic ends, in response to outrage over João Pedro’s death.
His life had been divided between home, school, church and the mall, his father said.
He got good grades and wanted to study law. He told his dad he would make him
proud.
When Neilton lost his job, João Pedro entered public school, only to find it lacking
teachers and classes. Rafaela got him into the private school where she teaches.
His parents said they never talked to João Pedro about racism. Nor did they ever
participate in protests, but they joined one on June 7. Rafaela said hearing João Pedro’s
name become a rallying cry has lightened their emotional load a bit.
“I never participated in events against racism or policing, never got involved with
those things. Today we’re living something we didn’t expect, something that arrives
and knocks on the door,″ Rafaela said. “With this repercussion, we saw João Pedro
wasn’t the first, and he also wasn’t the last.”
