COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF TWO METHODS FOR CONJUCTIVAL CYTOLOGY
IN CATS
ABSTRACT
This study proposed comparing the cytological techniques of brush cytology and the
impression cytology with transfer in cats. The study is focused in showing the facilities
for collecting and making blades, the final result on morphological preservation and
cellular structures in evidence. So, it can offer to the clinical veterinarian a low cost
alternative with easy execution and easy interpretation, helping to diagnose the ocular
surface disorders. The animals were divided in four experimental groups and which one
had 10 healthy cats and 10 cats with conjunctivitis. The control groups 1 (G1 – right
eye, brush cytology) and 2 (G2 – left eye, impression cytology with transfer), both
groups containing the same animals, that didn’t have any eye infection or systemic
which would cause secondary eye alterations. In the same way, the groups 3 (G3 –
right eye, brush cytology) and 4 (G4 - left eye, impression cytology with transfer) were
formed by animals with conjunctivitis signs that were not caused by anatomic alterations
in eyelids and eyelashes. The collected material was distributed on blades for making
the smears, fixed and stained using Papanicolaou staining method. With the brush
cytology method there was a bigger cellular prevalence and better evaluation of cells in
deeper layer, however, with the accumulation and destruction of some of them. This
method raised more discomfort, comparatively to the impression cytology with transfer
method, especially the ones with conjunctival alterations. With the impression cytology
with transfer method, it was observed only cells from superficial layers, with better
distribution on the blade, providing better view. This method showed to be less
traumatic and easy to collect, been a good option for healthy cats with eye lesion.
