Os sons de
/l/ e /ɫ/

LIGHT L DARK L
Apesar de comumente falarmos sobre o som de L em inglês, existem na verdade dois sons de L
na língua inglesa: o light L e o dark L.
Apesar disso, normalmente encontramos somente o símbolo /l/ representando o que seria som
de L em muitos dicionários de fonética. No entanto, existe um outro símbolo que descreve esse
segundo som: /ɫ/.
Logo, o light L é descrito por /l/. O dark L é descrito por /ɫ/. Em inglês, não encontramos som de
light L /l/ no final de palavras. Assim como também não encontramos o dark L /ɫ/ no começo de
palavras.
