Let’s read!

Going to work in the morning

My job is a long distance from my home, almost 50 kilometers away. I have to wake up early
every morning, as I’m always in a rush. There’s never enough time for a relaxed breakfast. At
exactly 6:00 AM, I get into my car and start the long drive.

I usually like driving on the highway more than in the city. During the morning rush hour, it’s
not very enjoyable. The heavy traffic is a little bit annoying. So I always listen to my favorite
classical music CD’s in the car – Chopin, Mozart, and Bach. That cheers me up a lot.

The drive to work takes about one hour. Going back home in the evening takes even longer,
maybe around 90 minutes. I’m thinking about trying to take the train to work instead of
driving. That way, I could still listen to my music with headphones, and even read a novel at
the same time.

My family at home
My family lives in a small house. It’s simple but pretty and It has a large garden. I like to work
in the garden but my sister hates to work there. She loves to read. She reads in the morning,
in the afternoon and at night. I give all the vegetables I collect to my parents. They like to
cook in our small kitchen. I eat any vegetable but my sister eats only a few.

22
My family always eats breakfast and dinner together. During the meals we talk and we laugh.
Then my sister washes the dishes. At night dad likes to listen to music while mom works on
the computer. I watch television and my sister reads.

Soon we go to bed. My parents go to bed late but my sister and I go to bed early. When I’m
ready to go to sleep, my sister wants to keep reading.

Dinner preparation
James’ mother was coming to dinner, so he decided to use the beautiful dishes she gave him.
He wanted to impress his mother. He remembered how great he felt when she gave him the
dishes. First, he took his best silverware, cups and plates.

He carefully placed the plates on the table. Then, he laid a cloth napkin next to each plate.
On the left side of the plate, he placed a knife making sure that its blade was facing the
plate. On the right side, James placed the fork and spoon. After filling the glasses with ice, he
put water in each glass. He placed white flowers in a vase in the middle of the table. They
had a delicious aroma.

When James stood back to admire his work, the doorbell rang. James had finished just in
time because his mother arrived earlier than he was expecting to.

Small Talk

Small talk is a break from an activity. Most people take short breaks during the day to talk to
others, while having a coffee, a glass of water, a cigarette, etc.

Small talk can be about any subject in the world, as long as it is appropriate. Topics such as
the weather, weekend plans, and sports are all acceptable. Subjects that are offensive and/or
inappropriate, even gossips, should be avoided at all costs, once they can compromise
business/personal relationships and cause one to be fired from his or her position or can
break up a friendship.

Topics like politics, current issues, and personal preferences aren't necessarily unacceptable,
but should be avoided, as they can easily result in disagreement and confrontation.

Small Talks can help to improve relationships, business-talk productivity, and permit a little bit
of fun.

Applying for jobs

Henry graduated from college with a degree in Elementary Education, and began searching
for jobs. While doing an internship previously as a university student, he discovered his
greatest interest was teaching children in primary school. He also had previous volunteer
experience as a camp and youth counselor.

However, he decided to focus his job hunt on elementary schools in his state. First, he
prepared and printed a nice and comprehensive résumé, highlighting his educational
background, work and volunteer experiences. He then added a section outlining his other
skills in such areas as foreign languages and computer programming. Finally, he added a
segment about his interests, and listed some personal references.

Once the résumé was ready, Henry checked for job openings daily. Much of his search was
done on the internet, researching elementary schools in the area - there were none in his
hometown, which was just a tiny village. He also chatted with people and asked his
colleagues about any job openings, as he heard that this kind of “networking” was important.
He also checked internet job boards.

33
After a few weeks, Henry discovered a possible job vacancy at a school about 15 miles from
his home. He wrote a nice presentation letter, outlining his background and expressing his
interest in the job. Then he attached his résumé, and mailed the application. One week later,
the school called him to come for an interview. And one month later, he started teaching
there.

Let’s read!

The hardest language

People often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy to
answer because there are many factors to take into consideration. Firstly, in a first
language the differences are unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally,
so the question of how difficult a language is to learn is only relevant when learning a
second language.

Some people seem to learn languages easily, while others find it very hard. Teachers and
the circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as
each learner's motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to
use it professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has
no direct use in their day to day life.

Different cultures and individuals from those cultures will find different languages more
difficult. No language is easy to learn well, although languages which are related to our
first language are easier. Learning a completely different writing system is a big challenge,
but that does not necessarily make a language more difficult than another. In the end, it
is impossible to say that there is one language that is the most difficult language in the
world.

So, believe in your dreams and learning a new language will be a pleasant thing.

Congratulations on finishing your essential level course!
