Rose está numa entrevista de emprego (is having an
interview fo r a job) com o Al. Ela quer se candidatar ao
cargo de assistente pessoal (she wants to apply fo r the
post o f personal assistant) no novo escritório (in their new
office), em Glasgow. Personal assistant, também conhecido
como personal o r private secretary (secretário pessoal ou
particular), é alguém que ajuda um executivo (businessman),
ou alguém assim (or the like), em suas tarefas cotidianas
(in his daily tasks). Em uma entrevista de emprego (when
you have an interview fo r a job), você deve fornecer (you
have to provide information about): informações pessoais
(your personal details), sua formação (your education), as
línguas que fala (the languages you speak), seu domínio de
informática (your computer skills) e também seus interesses
pessoais (as well as your interests).
Personal details são a data e o local de seu nascimento (date

and place of birth), seu endereço (your address), seu estado
civil (your marital status) e se você tem filhos (and if you
have children). Por exemplo (for example), o entrevistador
pode lhe perguntar (the interviewer may ask):
Are you single or married?

Você é solteiro ou casado?
Do you have any children?

Você tem filhos?

Você também deverá fornecer (you w ill also have to

provide) algumas informações sobre sua formação (some
information about your education), ou seja, onde você
estudou, se formou, etc. (where you carried out your studies,
your degrees etc.). Você pode:

Outro elemento importante (another important element) é

sua experiência profissional (is your w ork experience ou
professional experience). Rose fez um estágio durante o
verão (has had a summer internship). Ela também trabalhou
(she also worked), por dois anos (for two years), como
recepcionista (as a receptionist). No momento, ela está
empregada como assistente pessoal (she is employed as a
personal assistant). Se você já estiver empregado (if you are
already employed), o entrevistador poderá lhe perguntar
(the interviewer w ill ask you) por que você quer mudar de
emprego (why you want to change your job). Rose quer sair
de seu trabalho (wants to leave her job) porque seu marido
foi transferido de Londres para Glasgow (her husband has
been transferred from London to Glasgow).

N o trabalho (when working), é possível que você precise
falar um idioma estrangeiro (you may need some foreign
language):

Você fala algum idioma estrangeiro?
Rose é fluente em francês (is fluent in French). Ela também

tem um bom conhecimento de alemão (has a good
knowledge o f German).
Outra pergunta recorrente (another recurrent question) é

com relação ao domínio de informática (computer skills).

efficiently). Por fim (finally), eles podem lhe perguntar

ad é um anúncio publicado num jornal ou na Internet (is an
advertisement placed in a newspaper o r on the Internet) por
alguém que está procurando (by someone who is looking
for) ou oferecendo emprego (or offering a job). Nesse
caso (in this case), é uma empresa procurando por um
funcionário (it's a company looking fo r an employee). Todo
anúncio de trabalho (every job ad) tem uma certa estrutura
(has a precise structure). Ele deve indicar (it has to indicate)
o local (the location) e o salário oferecido (the salary).
Em seguida (then), o tipo de trabalho é especificado (the

job type is specified). Nesse caso (in this case), é fixo ou
permanente (the job type is permanent). O contrário de "fix o "
(the opposite of permanent) é "temporário" (is temporary).
Pode ser também um emprego de meio período (it can also
be part-time). Algumas habilidades ou qualidades pessoais
(some personal skills) também são exigidas (will be required

too). Skill é uma habilidade (an ability) para desempenhar

uma atividade ou um trabalho eficazmente (to efficiently

A descrição do trabalho (the job description) enumera

todos os prerrequisitos para o trabalho (lists all the specific
requirements of the job). Essa é uma parte muito importante
num anúncio de emprego (this is a very important section
in a job ad) e deve ser lida atentamente (and has to
be read carefully). Na maioria das vezes (most o f the
time), as empresas recrutam pessoas com experiência e
qualificações (companies require people with experience
and qualifications). A experiência refere-se ao fato de
você já ter ou não trabalhado no ramo (experience refers
to whether o r not you have already worked in the field).
Qualification é um registro oficial (is an official record), tal
como urn diploma (such as a diploma), que mostra que você
completou um curso de treinamento (showing that you have
completed a training course) ou que tern as competências
necessárias para o cargo (or have the necessary skills).
Am aioriadosanúnciosdeem pregos (most job ads) também
menciona os benefícios (include benefits as well). Benefit é
urn extra adicionado ao salário (is an extra added to the
salary), como um seguro de carro (such as car insurance).
Por fim (finally), a data de encerramento (the closing date),
que é a data limite para você se candidatar ao emprego
(is the date w ithin which you have to apply fo r the job).

(and a nightmare)? Um sonho (a dream) é uma série de
eventos ou imagens (is a series of events or images) que
passam por sua cabeça enquanto você está dormindo
(that run through your mind when you are sleeping). Urn
pesadelo (a nightmare) também é um sonho (is still a
dream), mas muito perturbador e assustador (but is very
upsetting and frightening one).

Note que, durante a descrição de seu pesadelo, Linda

verifica se Ray está ouvindo e entendendo. Primeiro, ela
d iz: "Is that dear?" ("Está claro?"). Em seguida: "A re you
w ith me?" ("Você está me acompanhando?"). E por fim:
"O k, so fa r?" ("Tudo bem até agora?").
Seguem outras maneiras de averiguar se a pessoa está
escutando você.

wants to know all about their weekend). Além de visitar as
termas romanas (besides visiting the Roman Baths), Sarah
e Emily foram ao Thermae Bath Spa. Spa é um lugar ou

e Em ily compraram um pacote de tratamentos (purchased

relaxamento (relaxation) e bem-estar (and well-being). Emily
fez uma massagem com pedra quente (was given a hot stone
massage). Hot stone massage é uma massagem especial (is a
special massage) feita com pedras lisas e aquecidas (that uses
smooth, heated stones). Normalmente, quem faz a massagem
é um massagista (a massage is usually given by a therapist).
Em ily também fez bandagens (also got body wraps). Essa

técnica consiste em enfaixar o corpo com (consists of
wrapping the body in) tecidos aquecidos (hot cloths), lençóis
plásticos (plastic sheets), cobertores (blankets), etc. Nesse
caso (in this case), eles também utilizaram (they also used)
lama rica em nutrientes (nutrient rich mud), algas marinhas
