1 Introduction

The cyclone is a phenomenon of nature caused by air masses that form circles in low pressure
centers accompanied by strong storms.

In this case, the intensity of the winds is essential for the formation of cyclones, which can
reach up 200km/h, and can vary in direction. In the northern hemisphere they form
counterclockwise and in the southern hemisphere it is clockwise. Note that cyclones arise
when air masses exceed 50km/h.

1.1. General objective

 Understand the causes and how to prevent cyclones.
1.2. Specific objective
 Define cyclone
 Explain the causes of cyclone
 Explain how to prevent cyclone for future cases
1.3. Methodology

The research is qualitative because it seeks to know the meanings, opinions of the participating
subjects. As for the nature, research is applied because it is objective in generating knowledge for
its application. As for the objectives, the research is explanatory because its central concern is to
understand the causes of cyclone Idai and how to prevent a cyclone for future cases. Talking into
account that the choice of method is what characterizes a research as scientific, gives reliability,
rationality and security (Michel, 2015), for the accomplishment of this work, bibliographic
research will be used as a methodology of the work that according to Gil (2008) it is made
through theoretical references already analyzed and published by written or electronic means,
such as books, scientific articles, and more.

The work is subdivided: introduction, development, conclusion and bibliographic reference.

2 Development

2.1 Main concepts

2.1.1 Cyclone

According to the US oceanic and atmospheric administration, a cyclone is a phenomenon that

represents a rotary system of clouds and storms formed in tropical or subtropical waters.

3 Cyclone Idai

A cyclone is a natural phenomenon, so is inevitable, but it is possible to precipate it.

According Aon (1019), in March 2019, the Republic of Mozambique suffered devastating effects
from the Idai cyclone, particularly in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambezia,
resulting in the death of minus 602 people, with more than 1641 wounds and 1 million people
who need health services.

It is estimated that 3000km 2 of land have been affected by floods, with more than 715000
hectares of submerged cultivation areas and widespread damage to important infrastructures.
From April 15, 2019, more than 70000 people were housed in temporary accommodation centers
in the four provinces (INGC, 15 April 2019).

To prevent similar cases in the future, it is advised before; it always has a portable radio, always
follow the news and temperature on television. During the cyclone, keep you calm the people
who are with you, follows the instructions transmitted by the radio, it is indoors, away from
windows and doors, if you have to leave the house, turn off the electricity and close the gas,
depart from the low areas by the coast, because they can be swept by the tides, if you are away
from home, seek shelter immediately. Once you have passed the storm, get away from the
damaged areas, the phone should only be used in case of emergency and follows the instructions
that are spread by the authorities (Governo de Moçambique, 2019).

6
4 Conclusion

After this work was completed that the Idai cyclone was the strongest tropical cyclone to reach
Mozambique since Jokwe in 2008. The tenth storm named and the seventh tropical cyclone of the
cyclone season in the southwest 2018-2019, the Idai had origin in a tropical depression that
formed on the east coast of Mozambique on March 4. To prevent similar cases you have to
always be connected to television or radio to listen to the authorities’ recommendations and
follow them.
