KET Preparation and practice
All students in Portugal are required to sit the Cambridge English: Key for Schools, also known as the Key
English Test (KET) for Schools at the end of Year 9. The KET is a basic level qualification that shows ability to
communicate in English in simple situations.
The test uses language from real-life situations and covers the four language skills – reading, writing, listening
and speaking.
The table below gives details for the different sections of the test. If you would like to see a full sample paper
for KET, you can download one from the website www.CambridgeESOL.org or www.cambridgeenglish.org.

Your Turn can prepare you and your students for this test by familiarizing you with the KET question types in
Year 8, and then providing more detailed skills preparation and guidance in Year 9.
KET practice in Your Turn 8.°- ano consists of:

Livro do Aluno:
• Activities which are of the same type as the KET questions are indicated with the symbol K .
• In the Revision sections, students are directed to the KET preparation pages in the Livro de Exercícios.

Livro de Exercícios:
This provides a test preparation section which has been specifically designed as preparation for KET. The
exercises test the language taught in the Livro do Aluno and follow the KET format. There is a double page of
questions after every three units, so that students can build their confidence in consolidating what they have
learned and using their language skills in KET-style exercises.

Online Practice:
Key for Schools Online Practice is also available on oxfordenglishtesting.com. Students can access their practice
pages using the information available on the access card accompanying the Livro de Exercícios.

Exercise 3
Pop Tops is my
favourite radio
programme. It airs
on WGBC Radio on
Monday evenings,
from 7 to 9 p.m.
DJ Tommy’s the host
of Pop Tops. He plays
all the biggest hits,
as well as songs
by new artists. He
often has guests on
his programme too.
On the last show,
he interviewed One
Direction. They’re
going to start
recording another
album soon!
I’m a big fan of
Pop Tops because
the music is really
modern and up-to-
date. I also like DJ
Tommy because he
always tells jokes
between songs.
Some of them are
really funny!

You’ll love it!
Next week Pop
Tops will have a

musicians around
the world. If you
win, you’ll be able to

That’s another good
reason to tune in!

Exercise 5
Sport Report is
my favourite TV
programme. It airs
on Channel 6 on
Saturdays, from 10 to
11 a.m. Coach Kelly is
the host. She reports
the biggest stories
of the week. Some
of them are really
interesting. Last week,
she talked to Michael
Phelps, the Olympic
swimmer. He talked
about future plans.
I’m a big fan of Sport
Report because it’s
exciting and it shows
lots of great video clips.

Ted:  Well, that’s not unusual. About
100,000 people come shopping here
every weekend! That makes it the
4th most popular tourist attraction
in London!
Mila:  Wow!
Ted:  What are you looking at, Mila?
Mila:  Over there! Are those gothic
clothes?
Ted:  Yes, they are! That shop only sells
clothes for goth fans, and most of it’s
black! It’s really not my style, but some
people love it.
Mila:  Hmm … I’m not crazy about
it myself, but it’s interesting. Look at
those girls!
Ted:  Yes, they’re called Gothic Lolitas.
It’s a really popular style in Japan.
Mila:  Hey! Look at this shop! It’s full of
Manga costumes!
Ted:  Ha! That’s so cool. Have you ever
dressed up in a costume like that?
Mila:  No, I haven’t, but it must be fun!
Ted:  Did you want to buy anything in
particular today?
Mila:  Well, I was hoping to find a new
leather jacket, but not in black. I don’t
really like dark colours. Oh! And I want
to look in some craft shops too.
Ted:  OK, let’s go to the Stables Market
first. That’s a good place for clothes.
Mila:  Are there only used clothes?
Ted  No, you can find both new and
used things. Why?
Mila  Oh, it doesn’t matter … I don’t
mind something used, if it looks good
on me!
Ted:  Great, let’s go to the Stables
Market then, and after that we can
go to some arts and craft shops at
the Camden Lock Market. It’s the best
place for that.
Mila:  Sounds good … and then we
can get something to eat. Shopping
always makes me hungry!
Ted:  OK, OK! Let’s get started!
