Ementa: Introdução à relação microestrutura-propriedades de materiais. Engenharia de contornos de grãos. Ligas de elevada entropia. Materiais nanoestruturados e heteroestruturados. Vidros e Vitro-cerâmicas. Justificativa: Trata-se de uma apresentação simples e concisa, que pretende discutir duas questões ligadas à Engenharia: a importância da Metalurgia Física na formação e na atuação profissional do Engenheiro; a necessidade da Metalurgia Física estar sempre se reinventando para atender as demandas da sociedade. Embora os fundamentos básicos da Metalurgia Física estejam consolidados há algum tempo, as crescentes e complexas exigências do ser humano para ter uma vida mais longa, com segurança e conforto, com riqueza e felicidade, impõem desafios que fomentam a busca pelo desenvolvimento de novos materiais, com controle de composição química, microestrutura e propriedades. Dentro do conjunto de diversos exemplos atuais existentes, três assuntos serão abordados: engenharia de contornos de grãos, ligas metálicas de elevada entropia, materiais nanoestruturadas e heteroestruturados, precedidos por uma introdução sobre a constituição de uma microestrutura e suas relações com propriedades do material. Encerra-se o encontro, fazendo um sucinto comentário sobre os vidros e as vitro-cerâmicas, aproveitando o Ano Internacional do Vidro estabelecido pela UNESCO.
