Etimologia
Escritores europeus contemporâneos
descreveram a doença da peste, em
latim, como pestis ou pestilentia —
equivalente a "pestilência"; epidemia —
continuando com a mesma escrita na
língua portuguesa; e mortalitas —
equivalente a "mortalidade".[14] Em inglês
antes do século XVIII, o evento era
chamado de "peste" ou "grande peste", "a
praga" ou "grande morte".[14][15][16]
Posteriormente à pandemia, "o primeiro
murrain" ou "primeira peste" foi aplicada,
para distinguir o fenômeno de meados
do século XIV de outras doenças
infecciosas e epidemias de
peste.[nota 1][14] A pandemia de 1347 não
foi referida especificamente como
"negra" nos séculos XIV e XV em
nenhuma língua europeia, embora a
expressão "morte negra" tenha sido
ocasionalmente aplicada a doenças
fatais de antemão.[14]
A frase "morte negra" (mors nigra) foi
usado em 1350 por Simon de Covino ou
Couvin, um astrónomo belga, que
escreveu o poema "Sobre o julgamento
do sol em uma festa de Saturno" (De
judicio Solis in convivio Saturni), que
atribui a peste a uma conjunção de
Júpiter e Saturno.[18][19] Em 1908,
Gasquet alegou que o uso do nome atra
mors para a epidemia do século XIV
apareceu pela primeira vez em um livro
de 1631 sobre a história dinamarquesa
de J. I. Pontanus: "Comummente e pelos
seus efeitos, eles chamavam de morte
negra" (Vulgo & ab effectu atram mortem
vocitabant).[20][21] O nome espalhou-se
pela Escandinávia e depois pela
Alemanha, tornando-se gradualmente
associado à epidemia de meados do
século XIV como um nome próprio.

Alguns historiadores acreditam que as

Notas
1. O termo "murrain" possui um
significado obsoleto para várias
doenças infecciosas que afetam
bovinos e ovinos. Literalmente
significa "morte" e era usado na
época medieval.[17]
2. Enquanto relatos contemporâneos
afirmam a criação de inúmeras valas
em resposta ao grande número de
mortos, investigações científicas
recentes de uma cova no centro de
Londres encontraram indivíduos
bem preservados enterrados em
sepulturas isoladas e espaçadas de
maneira uniforme, sugerindo algum
planejamento estratégico e enterros
associados ao cristãos naquele
período.[89]
3. Evidências primárias quantitativas,
incluindo números de mortos
diariamente, apoiam essa
conclusão.[96]
