ABSTRACT: In this paper, for the high strength HY 80 steel used by the
Brazilian Navy in the hulls of submarines, evaluations of the mechanical
properties, microstructural characterization and evaluation of residual
stresses by X-ray diffraction of the fusion welded joints with coated
electrodes were carried out. Two HY 80 steel sheets with dimensions of 850
mm x 150 mm x 24 mm were made, in which, before welding, they were
preheated. Welding parameters require great control, as the energy involved
in the process can lead to distortions and defects in the welded joint. These
sheets underwent a heat treatment of stress relief at 600°C and tempered
at 650°C. In the first stage of the study, the characterization of the weld was
carried out through tensile, impact Charpy, microhardness and optical
microscopy tests, and a posteriori, the evaluation of residual stresses was
carried out. These contribute significantly to the stress corrosion and fatigue
degradation process. The results obtained proved that HY80 steel complies
with the requirements demanded by the international military standards such
as MIL-S-16216K, MIL-STD 22D and MIL-STD-1621K SH, for the

mm/min.
