ABSTRACT
The diagnosis of brain death brings with it the urgency of the family interview so that
their position regarding organ donation be known, and if possible, so that the
donation can be quickly effected, since the deterioration of organs after the patient's
death occurs in a hurry. The removal of organs for the purpose of transplantation and
treatment is regulated by law, and can only be authorized after performing, on the
donor, all diagnostic screening tests at variable time intervals, suitable for certain age
groups. Its notification is mandatory for all health establishments situated in Brazil, of
all those cases diagnosed with suspected brain death. Organ donation today is an
important step towards rehabilitation, and it increases human life expectancy. Organ
transplantation requires a complex and large surgical technique associated with the
difficulty of managing immunosuppressed patients and the constant shortage of
organs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs)
have undergone changes in the way they operate, and the long-term impact of this is
something to consider. The objective of this study is to describe and quantify, using
the analysis of medical records of potential organ donors treated at a hospital in
Manaus (AM), from 2016 to 2020, thus determining what are the causes that lead to
the non-effectiveness of the organ and tissue donation in the state of Amazonas in
the past few years. It is a descriptive, exploratory, cross-sectional, documentary,
retrospective study with a quantitative approach. It will be managed from a database
built by medical records of patients from public and private hospitals in the city of
Manaus-AM with a diagnosis of brain death and accompanied by an organ
procurement organization (OPO). The outcome variable of the study will be evaluated
based on the reasons that led to the non-effectiveness of the organ donation of these
patients, namely: Medical Contraindications, Logistical Problems and Family Refusal.
The organization of the data will be managed using the Excel 2013 spreadsheet for
Windows, such data will be arranged and presented in the form of a table for analysis
of the results. Knowing what are the main reasons that lead to the non-effectiveness
of organ donation can provide new tools so that professionals working in the donation
and transplantation process can carry out this process in a directed and appropriate
way, thus obtaining more organs and tissues for transplantation.
