ABSTRACT: This article presents in a succinct manner, the role of the Brazilian
sociologist and historian Oliveira Vianna in building concepts about race relations in
Brazil, considering it alongside other formulators of a racial discourse to as crucial in
building an author Brazilian national identity. For that, seek to establish a critical reading
of the work of Oliveira Vianna, realizing that although you can not encompass the
entirety of his thought, one can at least propose hypotheses about the prospects of this
intellectual. We use this analysis to the theories proposed by Karl Mannheim and Antonio
Gramsci, scrutinizing it in the light of the sociology of knowledge.

INTRODUÇÃO

Como ciência, ela propunha uma nova compreensão das leis de hereditariedade humana, cuja
aplicação visava a produção de ‘nascimentos desejáveis e controlados’; enquanto movimento
social preocupava-se em promover casamentos entre determinados grupos e – talvez o mais
importante – desencorajar certas uniões consideradas nocivas à sociedade. (SCHWARCZ,
2008, p. 13).
Vianna. Mas será que as ideias de Oliveira Vianna estavam tão fora de
lugar ou será que ele simplesmente partilhava dos conceitos construídos
por seu grupo? Para tentar compreender melhor essa situação, faremos
uma breve analise da biografia e da bibliografia do autor.
