Me arriscaria
desejo é a própria falta, a falta do do desejo do Outro.

The works that most deeply affected me emotionally and sentimentally referred to
death, undoubtedly to a grief for lost life. The art present in the tiles mostly represented the
loss of material in the realm of death, as well as a certain imminent escape from the process of
dying, which is also a certainty inherent to the human condition, inhabiting a paradox of
interesting analysis. I believe that according to the Laminal Model of Cultural Psychology, I
was led at least to the second level, where I was carried by a certain inexplicable sensation in
words, perhaps a sensation reminiscent of the emptiness that accompanies the loss of life.
images, and senses that were being presented in the work in question. In short, I opted for a
sequence of three images, the first titled "Fear of Death"; the second as "The death all is left
The relevance to contemporary society arises precisely from the analysis I made of
grief. It is interesting to consider how art produced in a completely different setting from the
present time can refer to the hermeneutics of life itself, representing objectively the act of
dying, transcending time, whether past, future, or present, as it is something not subject to
time but to the human condition. From my context, immersed in a Psychology course in the
city of Salvador and taking the "Hospital Psychology" discipline, mourning is my quickest
interpretation of the feeling that could be expressed. In this way, I believe that the importance
of the work lies in its openness to analysis, allowing identification with something profound
within oneself or one's own life that traverses us. The tile art tells the story of life itself and
also of the city. From the reading of Dugnani (2012), I feel that my personal reading and
understanding of the relevance of the work were captured and grasped by the passage:
"Memory, where history grows, which in turn nourishes it, seeks to save the past to serve the
present and the future [...] so that collective memory serves for the liberation and not for the
When we delve into the images of the colonial tiles of the Convent of São Francisco,
2012, p.50). In general, what I found about the history and the "true meaning" of the work
was very little and scarce, so I did not find a significant trail about the works I selected, but
about the history of the azulejos in the cloister of the Convent São Francisco de Salvador in
general. The tile panels were painted by Bartolomeu Antunes (there are actually many
discussions about whether the true authorship would be his or not) - and were produced in
Lisbon in 1745 and assembled in 1746-1748 in the lower cloister of the Convent of São
Francisco, in Salvador - Bahia. It is stated in this book that the main author of the works
sought to intensify Catholic religious meditation through moralistic content referring to both
Greco-Roman antiquity, from a technical, symbolic, and even ideological sense, also adding
Thus, the great curiosity about these works is how this praise of pagan figures could
be related to the context of the convent in the 18th century, a setting occupied by Franciscans
and when Brazil was still a colony of Portugal. At first, there is information that the works
were influenced by the Dutch artist Otto van Veen (1556-1634), the artist of engravings from
the work "Theatro moral de la vida humana y de toda la philosophia de la vida humana de los
antigos y modernos." Thus, there is a certain resemblance between the Stoic philosophy of the
Neoplatonists and Catholic ideals (DUGNANI, 2012). Throughout all the works, it is possible
to identify a religious sense, what is right or wrong, or even linked to virtues and values seen
favorably by Catholic dogmas. So, in the arts selected by me that reference death and "letting
go of life," there is a very strong emphasis on the material aspects of this detachment, with the
representation of money and other physical riches in the tiles, as if highlighting "the sin of
"warnings" in the works, reminders of the "correct way to act in the world," according to this
specific religion. Something like: "remember that in death, we take nothing, so pay attention
to your material attachments on Earth." It is also interesting to identify how I arrived at such
conclusions, attributing meanings to each element of the analyzed art based on what I know
about religion and my reading about the history of the works. Thus, there is indeed a
processes refer to the construction of meanings, as forces that act to reduce - or encode - the
complexity of experience and, on the other hand, increase the complexity of initial
experience. In this sense, the construction and attribution of meaning occur in the cognitive
dimension and allow us to build signs and symbols to convey the experience we have in our
interaction with the environment, as well as being part of the process of internalization of
signs that aid in the construction of an internal experience. I believe that my first contact with
presented elements, traversed by a certain confusion and attempt to understand, even though I
identified some objectives known to me and explainable as signs, there was still a certain
"first impression" with the work as a whole, a moment when semiotic mediation would come
into play (FOSSA, 2017). What touched me the most in this sense was a kind of fear of death,
highlighted in the whole of the images, something like "the escape from something that
cannot be escaped," and from this impression, I used what I know to enter into an explanatory
On the one hand, the experiential impact at first sight loses some of its complexity in
this process of semiotic transcription, but at the same time, the process of "hyper-
mediation. There are two parallel lines occurring simultaneously from experiences in the
environment, one of them tends towards homogenization - schematization, and the other
towards heterogenization - pleromatization. From this perspective, pleromatic objects - that is,
iconic signs or symbols, allow all people to share this psychological context to understand the
meaning in the direction that the object or symbol presents it. Thus, art can be conceived as a
"pleromatic object" because it allows this sharing of meaning. While schematization occurs in
the process described below from psychoanalysis, the schematic meaning of a felt interiority.
According to Valsineer (2006), this coding of experience into verbal concepts and signs
allows the formal construction of categories that simplify complexity while allowing the
construction of complex ideas and encompasses experiences in a single concept, as is the case
From the text written by Dunker (2019), in the light of psychoanalytic theory about
of slipping in relation to the integration of the lost object into the Self. In cases of pure
identification of the Self with the lost object, pathological conditions such as melancholy and
some types of depression stand out. The text proposes an analysis considering the pillars that
ensure Freud's discussions about mourning, considering that, for psychoanalytic hypothesis,
mourning is also a mode of subjectivation and permanent relationship with the other. I don't
fully focus on this author's theory, but proposing to unfold some points, it is worth thinking
about how Freud often places mourning in the condition of something that produces a
"inhibition and loss of interests [...] fully explained by the work of mourning in which the ego
is absorbed."
In this sense, even though the works do not directly refer to mourning but rather to the
phenomenon of death, I tend to think, much from the passage of the work: "Death is the end
of things," how there is something like a deadline, in which this subject is "condemned" to a
fact distant from everything he knows. In this sense, it is possible to identify pleromatization
and schematization occurring side by side, in emotional and rational reactions to the works.
Still, according to Freud (1917), and in the logic of mourning, it is possible to state that:
"persuaded, by the sum of narcissistic satisfactions derived from being alive, to break his
connection with the abolished object - then is the time when I release him - perhaps we can
assume that this breaking work is so slow and gradual." In this sense, it immediately came to
my mind how similar the processes represented in the tiles are to the arrival of a "scheduled
death," like the certainty of life, which is also represented in a slow, procedural way, just as
mourning is, the elaboration of loss. According to Dunker (2019), it is possible to conclude
that "mourning structurally resists the logic of production, the logic of hastening."
Seeing the dead body in the sequential image (Figure 3), I venture to share that what
came to my mind was a body that is saying goodbye to its own life, be it material and
concrete, like the objects arranged in space such as a crown, riches, but also the farewell, or
even mourning, for everything else that was left behind, towards "a death that is the end of
things," and at the same time towards its own mourning, in a "mourning that consists of
identifying the loss of the real [...] - piece by piece, piece by piece, sign by sign, until
exhaustion, when that is done, it's over" (Freud, 1917, p.72). I would risk adding one more
psychoanalytic description that comes to mind in this analysis, in order to think about how
much this process of losing a life, so represented in materiality by the works in the tiles, also
expresses itself through immaterial means, considering it to be the loss of a life, of
experiences with the environment, of familiarity with knowledge, and towards an unfamiliar
destination. About the infinite losses proposed in his text, Dunker (2019) proposes something
that had already been linked by Lacan, about desire, the immeasurability of loss translates into
a desire, like an "infinite substance that inhabits finite bodies," which is not completely
hostage to language, just as it cannot be completely subjectivized, desire is the lack itself, the
lack of the desire of the Other. Finally, I emphasize that art is one of the most interesting tools
in the transmission of this "unfamiliar," or this "desire that is the lack itself," due to an
immeasurability of loss, the works in the tiles can be interpreted as an attempt to represent
something certainly inexplicable in the purely linguistic field. As death is an event, the first
measure, emotionally felt, allowing plenty of space for pleromatization, in conjunction with
schematization.
