 Principais preposições e usos mais comuns

AMPLIANDO SEUS CONHECIMENTOS

Tanto na língua portuguesa como na inglesa, podemos entender a preposição como a

palavra invariável que liga duas palavras ou orações, estabelecendo entre elas relações de
sentido e de dependência. O emprego adequado das preposições é essencial para a
coesão do texto.

preposições em inglês
têm inúmeras funções.
Em dicionários de inglês
bem conceituados, a
preposição at chega a
listar dezoito usos
principais, os quais, por
sua vez, podem
corresponder a
diferentes preposições

Ao mesmo tempo, preposições diferentes podem ter usos muito similares (in the morning /
de manhã; on Monday morning/ na segunda-feira de manhã; at night / à noite).

Além disso, muitos substantivos, adjetivos e verbos são normalmente empregados com
preposições específicas. Dizemos the reason for (o motivo por que ou a razão pela qual);
arrive at (chegar em); angry with somebody (bravo com alguém); on a bus (no ônibus).
Também não é tarefa muito fácil identificar a posição correta da preposição numa frase. É
preciso prestar atenção em todo o contexto. Há construções em inglês que dispensam a
preposição, enquanto que em outras línguas o seu uso é obrigatório e vice-versa.

As tabelas a seguir apresentam as preposições mais frequentemente utilizadas em inglês

e exemplos de usos. Observe-as.
